Chapter 88 - A Rat Alone

Eodum laid still for a while more, instincts shrilling to stay still. Nervous eyes flicked around, surveying the area for the lizardman or any other demons who might still be around. Pretending to be dead, Eodum still kept perfectly still, refusing to do anything that might alert others it was there. After about an hour of keeping frozen, the grass disturbed as a deer-like creature walked up to Eodum.

It had four horns that resembled a ram's, and sturdy, six muscular legs that belied its thin body. It lowered its head and sniffed Eodum a few times before opening its mouth to reveal two rows of sharp teeth. Each was long and pointed, curving a bit backwards. These teeth are clearly made for latching onto things, hooking onto prey and never letting go.

It lowered its drooling maw to Eodum, its pupils promptly flattening into something that resembled a goat's pupils. Its jaws spread open farther and farther, opening wider than should be physically possible. As it lowered its dripping maw to Eodum, it viciously snapped down on the rat. With the closing of its jaws, it suddenly only found air in its waiting mouth, clear of the meal it thought was in front of it.

A sharp pain rang through its side and before it could yelp in startled pain, its vision tilted and blacked out. The creature's head hit the ground with its hard horns, a small crater of dirt created by the weighted head. A large clawed paw ripped through the deer-like being as if it was paper, shredding it into something Eodum could eat on the run.

Now that it was out of hiding, it had to run as it did not want to run into the demon army again. That one lizardman easily overpowered Eodum and others, and it didn't want to learn if the rest of the army could follow suit. That golem demon seemed quite formidable, maybe just as or even stronger than the lizardman. Sprinting away, Eodum ran to the place it felt the safest, the place where humans and demons tended to avoid, the Kraude forest.

While they might be capable of defeating the monsters there, there were so many, and they were so varied that it would be far more trouble than it was worth. In addition, with the difficult kill or be killed way of life, monsters found themselves becoming stronger and stronger while they lived there. The threat of encountering an upstart beast was all too real, so most people would want to avoid the forest. The only people to actively go in and out are adventurers, and they are quite eccentric and odd by the average human's standards.

Going into the forest, Eodum thought over the recent events that had occurred. The demon army arrived, most likely to see what had happened to Nomed. Most of the demons there had light weight armor, so they were probably just scouting out what had happened. Them finding Void Horse was a complete coincidence.

On that note, what was Eodum to do about Henry and Sheila? It wanted to try and get its companions back, but at the moment, that was but a suicide mission destined to fail. Right now, they'd have to wait for Eodum, and Eodum could only hope that they didn't die.

In Eodum's first life, it was always alone, and in the beginning of its second life, it was still alone. However, with the arrival of Henry and Sheila, it spent an extended period of time with other friendly beings. This was a first in Eodum's life, and without them, something in it didn't feel right. Something felt wrong, bad, unfair. Frustration.

Despite the new welling emotions in Eodum, it knew it could only push forward and become stronger. That was all it could do at the moment. The best way to become stronger, was to kill, so that its status would improve. Speaking of:

127 Hp!? This is after regenerating too! How much damage did that kick do!? Eodum shivered slightly at the thought of the damage that was inflicted in that single attack. In addition, even with [Accelerated Thoughts], Eodum couldn't follow the lizardman's movements. One moment he was there, the next, he was gone, and Eodum could feel itself being launched across the ground.

While Eodum could think over these things all it wanted, at the moment, it was more important to focus on improvements it could make with its Ap and Sp, so it would push these thoughts to the back of its mind. Eodum's attention drifted to Ap, and while it was tempted to dump half of its points into luck, right now, it felt like hoping good would happen wouldn't be too useful.

… Then again, dumping fifteen points into luck sounded right. Why? Because why not. Eodum was about to will its points to distribute, but a noise from its left caught Eodum's attention. Warily, Eodum stalked over to the origin of the noise, and when it peeked out from the bushes, it saw an unexpected old friend. It was Kali.
