Kali Nossraillac was born in the village of Eman. It's a small farming village with its population made up entirely of demi-humans, monsters, and demons. Kali is half dellich and half minotaur. The dellich are a race of pale indigo humanoids which evolved in toxic tundras. They have a resistance to the cold and immunity to most toxins. The dellich can produce their own poisons and utilize them, but Kali only inherited the skin color, cold resistance, and toxin immunity.
Minotaurs are a race of humanoid bull people. They're known for their brute force and impressive horns. Kali inherited both the strength of minotaurs and their horns, but nothing else like fur or leg shape. Her family is composed of her dellich father, Freyr, her minotaur mother, Luara, her half and half brother, Bernardo, but his nickname is Basil, and herself.
Kali and Basil are quite different, but that was just because they take after different sides of the family. Basil takes after their minotaur mother, but he has slightly purple fur and horns because of his dellich blood. In addition, he secretes a weak hallucinogenic poison when stressed. The poison smells like basil and when he was a baby, he ate their neighbors basil plant, so that earned him the nickname Basil. He also doesn't really like his name Bernardo, so he likes the nickname Basil.
Basil is quite kindhearted and soft despite his appearance, so he would get bullied a lot. One day when he was getting bullied, his poison glands activated, and he made the bullies high. They caused quite a bit of trouble while high, and they realized despite Basil's lack of fighting back, it didn't make him an easy target. The bullies kept away from him from that day on, and he found himself just living a peaceful life on their family's farm.
Basil and Luara do most of the work on the farm because of how strong they are. Kali also puts in quite the effort because she did inherit some of the strength from her mother, although way less than Basil. The family's farm focuses on fruits and flowers. They farm tomatoes, peppers, and the unique flower satsunev. The satsunev is a flower with lush, large, red, oval petals and a soft stem-like part coming out of it. The satsunev absorbs magical energy and sends it back out in sweet-smelling, almost controlling waves. The smell is addicting and pulls in nearby fauna. When the fauna get close enough, the satsunev will send out a cloud of seeds that will stick on the animal.
The sastunev's smell isn't the only sweet part of it; because it produces a sweet mana for its scent, the mana makes the plant also quite sweet. The Nossraillac family took advantage of this and supplied the plants with mana by emitting it near them. With the extra mana, the satsunev becomes noticeably sweeter than those found in the wild. In addition, special care is taken when farming the satsunev. They are kept within direct sunlight with just enough water to make the soil damp but not flooded, and they are given a constant supply of fertilizer made from monsters. Their satsunev makes up a large part of their profit, though the rest of their plants do pull their weight.
Kali moved back to Eman because of Eodum's presence. She luckily managed to escape the city before Eodum took over, and she's currently totally unaware of what's happening. As she uses a knife to cut into the supple fish, her mind travels back to the Ksilisab incident. That perfectly black fur, darker than anything you could imagine, and those glowing white eyes, they haunt her every night. She has nightmares of Eodum finding her one night, and swiftly kills her entire town. Mother, father, brother, neighbor: none of them matter in the indiscriminate slaughter Eodum causes.
She fills a chill run across her skin and goosebumps start to form despite her cold resistance. The very presence of Eodum was something that caused her fear. She hadn't told her family of the rat that now finds itself at the roots of Kali's fear. They all knew something was wrong though, her normal cheery behavior was nowhere to be found in the husk that was left. Even while eating her favorite meal, she found herself staring blankly into the chunky, red sauce. While working the fields, she works systematically and unthinkingly. Her movements have become almost mechanical when compared with her past.
"Okay Kali, we need to talk," Freyr interjected, "Something is clearly wrong. We're family okay, you can talk with us."
Luara nodded in agreement, "Your father's right dear, you seem down, almost scared."
"It's nothing, don't worry about it." Kali resisted with a fake smile.
"Nah sis, I've seen you sad, and this is something else. You were a pure silver adventurer, but lately you've felt terrified of something." Basil countered.
"Basil's right Kali," Freyr joined, "You came back one day with no warning. Now you avoid the subject of why, and try to stay in your room the entire day. We're your family, you can tell us what it is."
'No, I can't,' Kali thought to herself. She stood up, readying to say she was full and was leaving, but she could hear the hurried footsteps and whispers amongst those outside. The rest of her family could also hear them as their heads turned to face the ruckus. Basil asked, "What's happening out there?"
"I don't know, but it has to be something by the sounds of it." Kali began to make for the door followed by her family. The door opened carefully as the family walked from it to a gathering near the entrance of the village. The family made their way towards it, getting a view of the cause of the disturbance. There she saw a spirit, a holy undead, and a human-esque figure standing in the lead. Hidden under the coverings of light leather armor, light clothing, and plenty of bandages. Underneath it all, only a single eye with scales around it could be seen.
Kali hit the ground with a thud, as the pale indigo of her skin turned even paler, "N-No, it c-c-can't b-be. Why h-h-here?" Then, on the horizon of the golden grass, the city of Nomed stood there smoking. Oh, that's why. Despite the calling of her family asking what was wrong, she heard none of it. A bunny when facing a wolf was what she had become. Then, the wolf spotted her. Not with its yellow lizard-like eye, but with a small glow behind it. Something only noticeable if you really focused, but something clear to her. Her nightmare was here with the accompanying crew. Her days were over.
