CHAPTER 28: THE SACRIFICES.
2 years after Orkumaga's marriage to Susan, his mother(Dooter) had a dream that the old man she once met in the river had visited her and again assured her of additional blessings. When she got up, she told her husband Mr. Martins about the dream and again, implied that after all the old man had said would happened had manifested, there's a necessity for them to make a sacrifice to demonstrate appreciation to the old man as he was the reason for the turn around of her life when it seemed she was never going to experience prosperity in her life. Mr. Martins after hearing that, appreciated her and again, inquired what she believed would be good to buy and offer to the man since they had all conceded that the man was not just and ordinary entity. His wife (Dooter) said to him that she would ask her mother to tell her the things that will be nice and instantly invited her mother who was living with her since her father Ayaaga had died. Her mother Mrs. Mzamber after been inquired, instructed her to buy a very big white he goat and also Kola nuts to go there and sacrifice to the old man. Dooter after heeding to her mothers recommendations, thanked her but again, asked her where she believed would be good for the sacrifice but her mother again reminded her of the place she first met him.
Few days after buying the he goat and the kola nuts, she asked her husband if he would follow her to the river but her mother (Mrs. Mzamber) instructed her to go alone. Very late in the night, she went to the river and invoked the old man and thanked him for being the savior of her life. She said that he was the one that saved her from the miserable life which the village witch had made it to be her destiny. She pointed out the things the old man had saved her from and said to him that she would have not given birth and also would have not lived a happy life as the old witch had wanted her to live a miserable life by cursing her that she was not going to born.
After thanking the old man, she told him that the same way he did by telling her that Silver or gold he didn't have but he would redeem her from the curse of barrenness. she furthermore doesn't have the silver or gold to give him and again pleaded with the old man to accept the little she has since she would not be able to pay him for all he's done for her.
While she was talking, the old man reappeared and this time smiling and again sitting at the same spot he sat the first time she met him in the river on one of the branches of the tree that felled and immediately she saw the old man, she ran with intents to hug him but couldn't get close as the old man was not just a human being.
Been not able to get close to him, the old man told her that she had done enough.
The old man again promised her that as she had proved to them that she was a strong woman with also a golden heart, she would live long and become the oldest woman in the world.
Furthermore, he promised her son Orkumaga and all her generations would never die a premature death.
Immediately Dooter heard that, she felled on her knees and thanked the old man but again asked him what he has seen in her that made him to love her that much but the old man explained to her that, love should be free and genuine so it doesn't matter. He told Dooter to go without turning back to look at him.
After thanking the Old man Dooter turned and face her house and began to go.
When she reached the house, she told her husband (Mr. Martins) all that happened and they all rejoiced. She called her son Orkumaga and told him also what happened and he all was also filled with joy and again, she said to herself that she never doubted that she was not going to born a child even as she was not aware of how it will happen and how long it will take but today, her enthusiasm has paid off. Smiling and remembering her yore as it all became history.
