Chapter 34 - CH34:TO THE CITY!

[27 Days left until the next full moon.]

Dezhong was woken up by his system reminding him of his inevitable fate awaiting him by the end of the month. However, he wasn't so afraid of the full moon, since he already had bigger things to deal with. At the moment, the boy's father was in a coma in the hospital, unconscious and suffering from injuries. Dezhong wasn't sure what would become of his father when he woke up, and if he would be the same again. More importantly, he was worried about what the city was going to do about his father's job position.

As Chief of Desper's police, Damian Prince took down hundreds of criminals, smugglers, and terrorists, and put a stop to hundreds of crimes that could have led to many deaths. In fact, his father was one of the main reasons Desper was much safer than RedZone. Now that he was down, Dezhong worried about what would happen to his father's position.

"Maybe there's a national address again," he said while flipping through the channels on the screen. "That's weird. The mayor rarely gives these things, especially after huge disasters. Yet again, it was always dad doing them and…let's just hear what he has to say."

"Good morning, citizens of Desper," the mayor greeted while proceeding with his address. "As we all know, yesterday our fine city was attacked by an unknown entity that nearly completely destroyed South-eastern Desper. As a result, out of eight thousand people in total, we have lost one thousand five hundred and have five hundred more admitted to the hospital. The others have become homeless and are currently in refugee camps set up by the hoodlums known as the Gorillas."

"How dare he call the Gorillas hoodlums?" Dezhong groaned.

"The police sent six D2 mechanical units to try and apprehend the beast, but they failed, and I wonder why higher-tiered units weren't deployed. As a result of the former chief's lazy commanding, lives were lost. Till now, we do not know what happened to the beast, and the police are already on a manhunt for it. Even though former Chief Prince helped save a 'couple of lives'…"

"Former Chief?" Dezhong wondered. "Has this fat man already replaced dad?"

"His poor command will not be taken lightly. Also, he is currently in the hospital nursing injuries and is in a coma. We do not know when he'll be back on duty, so it was my decision to appoint Assistant Chief Michael Mane as Desper's new head of police."

The whole crowd attending the address gasped in shock at the quick change the mayor had made. Even though people died, no one in Desper dared to hold Chief Prince responsible, so seeing the mayor turn his back on Prince so quickly made them furious.

"No questions will be answered, and all power has been given to Mane. Desper's Police Force is now under his command. Thank you and goodbye."

Out of frustration, Dezhong threw the TV remote at the screen and damaged it in an instant. This sudden change and betrayal to his father was so sudden that he didn't notice his canines grow while he raged in silence. 'How could the mayor betray dad like that? After all he had done for this town. I won't take this lightly.'

*KNOCK* *KNOCK*

Dezhong, who was in the middle of interacting with his system, was cut short by a loud and violent knock coming from the kitchen door. When he went to see who it was, he noticed a police hover squad car hovering by the sidewalk. Two policemen waited outside, each with frustration all over their weary, exhausted faces. Knowing who they were, Dezhong slowly and carefully opened the door and proceeded to ask what they wanted.

"Hello, officers," he greeted. "Is everything alright?"

"Hey, Dezhong," one of the two officers greeted with a forced smile. "We're here to inform you about…."

"I already know," Dezhong interrupted. "Is everything alright?"

"We need you to come and collect a few of Chief Prince's belongings," the second officer spoke with his hoarse, exhausted voice. "We're saddened by this sudden change and betrayal towards your father, but we have no choice but to follow orders. It won't take long, and we'd be glad if you cooperated with us."

Without hesitation, Dezhong agreed to go with the officers to Desper's Police Headquarters. The trip from his home to HQ was about forty-five minutes, and it was a long and awkward ride. Luckily, their hover squad car allowed them to fly past the long lines of thick traffic.

"So much traffic," he said, realizing how long it had been since he last visited Desper's inner city. "Why are there so many cars?"

"Judging by that look on your face," the second officer, who was in his late forties, spoke, hoping to ease Dezhong's tension. "I guess you're wondering why so many cars are rushing into the city. Well, it's because many people, like you and me, are upset about the mayor's foolish decision to have your father replaced."

"It's not permanent though, right?" Dezhong asked. "I mean, once my dad's alright, he'll get his position back, right?"

"It doesn't work like that," the officer replied. "And we don't know if it's temporary or not, but judging from the mayor, he's willing to lay off one of Desper's greatest men in blue. Can't believe I voted for him. Anyways, the people are protesting and sending their complaints directly to City Hall and HQ. We need you to get your father's stuff because we have reason to believe that some people might want to steal Chief Prince's belongings and either sell them or mark them as national treasures."

"You mean people are crazy enough to try and rob the police?"

"This is Desper's capital. Of course, people will try and rob us. Don't worry, we're almost there. Just a few more minutes and you'll be on your way."
