Chapter 12 - STATIC VIEW

Lenny was back again in the painting room as soon it was bright enough outside. She walked around the room slowly, cautiously examining the surroundings.

Everything that has happened last night felt like a blur to Lenny. It felt surreal, but the red bruise around her wrist was the only proof that what she had experienced had infact happened.

Lenny walked over to the large window and peered out of it. The sun had come out of hiding from the clouds and it's lights were gracing the grasses and the big old tree.

Lenny's eyes wandered to the makeshift swing and her eyes lit up. She could recall vividly, the little girl she had seen sitting on the swing. Chills ran up her spine when she recalled the feeling she got when they made eye contact and the weird state of her eye balls.

The ordeal of last night was unexplainable and Lenny couldn't wrap her head around any of it. The weird looking entity that grabbed her wrist was the most bizarre of them all.

Lenny wasn't one to believe in the supernatural, but she could feel herself inclining towards that pattern of thinking. That was the only way she could accept what had happened to her last night.

Sighing, Lenny rubbed her bruised wrist as she gazed at it. She looked over at the canvas and her eyes lit up instantly. Lenny recalled the inspiration she had gotten last night and decided to see what she could make out of it.

Picking up a pencil, Lenny settled herself in front of the canvas and stared at it. After taking a moment to visualise what she wanted to draw, she began to move the pencil against the canvas with delicate strokes.

Lenny's mind quickly flashed back to her grandmother and that instantly caused her to stop drawing. After she her grandmother had collapsed, she had been so caught up with drawing, that she has zeroed everything else out of her mind.

Lenny shot up from the chair abruptly and briskly headed out of the painting room and down the silent corridor to her grandmother's room.

As she stood outside her grandmother's room there was a slight feeling of hesitation. Lenny knocked on the door lightly, and didn't get an answer.

Reluctantly, she pushed the door open and peaked into the room cautiously. It was empty and dead quiet. Lenny shut the door and stood in the corridor, bemused.

Where did her grandmother go?

Lenny walked down the stairs and ignored the creaking noises it made as she came down. She breezed into the living room and stopped dead in her tracks when her eyes landed on her grandmother, who was sitting on the couch staring at the old television.

Lenny switched her gaze to the TV and blinked. The screen was alive and static could be seen on it accompanied by the characteristic sizzling noise it made.

She looked back at her grandmother, an eerie feeling growing in the air.

"Um, grandmother?"

The old lady craned her neck towards Lenny's direction in a very robotic manner.

"Oh, hello dear... did you have a good night's sleep?" she asked with a wide smile on her lips, wide enough to display her irregular set of teeth.

"Yes, I uh...I did. Are you feeling better today?"

The old woman titled her head at Lenny with her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"What do you mean?"

Lenny was taken aback by her question and the oblivious and clueless look plastered on her face.

"You, passed out in the bathtub yesterday." Lenny replied bluntly.

"Oh." She said as her gaze moved to the ground, her face still filled with confusion and now, a mix of worry and anxiety.

"I don't remember anything that happened yesterday, I'm sorry." She continued sadly.

And realisation hit Lenny like a hard blow. Her grandmother had Alzheimer's disease. She was bound to get memory loss.

"Oh, no it's fine. Did you have breakfast yet?" Lenny asked.

The old woman shook her head.

"Okay, I'll go make breakfast." Lenny said and almost scurried to the kitchen.

Lenny wanted to avoid the awkwardness at all costs. She pulled the refrigerator open and scanned the groceries left inside. It had a decent amount of the basic things she would need to whip up a standard breakfast, but Lenny knew she would have to go grocery shopping soon.

Lenny picked out a few eggs and some frozen ham from the refrigerator and laid it on the old wooden counter. She popped the can of ham open and laid it down on a plate.

With a knife in hand, she set out to slice the ham in thin pieces when she felt her pocket vibrating. She reached into it and pulled out her phone that was alerting her of a call.

Lenny picked up the call and held the phone to her ear.

"Hi mom."

"Hey, how's it going over there? Are you taking care of your grandmother?"

Lenny grimaced as she recalled the bathtub incident, but there was no way she was letting her mother know what had happened.

"I'm doing my best mom and grandma's fine."

"Hmmm, is she taking her prescribed medication?"

Lenny blanked out and couldn't come up with any excuse. She had not been checking up on her grandmother as much as her mother had expected her to.

"Ill take that silence as a no." Her mother's voice boomed from the phone.

"Come on mom, give me a break. I've been here for two days."

"Thats not an excuse. You need to start checking up on your grandmother regularly."

Lenny sighed and sliced down on the ham with her free hand.

"Okay, but mom, I've noticed something weird about grandma."

The line went quiet for a while.

"Did something happen?"

Lenny sliced down on the ham again.

"No, I just saw her in the living room, staring at a static TV. It was a very eerie sight." Lenny said in a hushed tone.

Evelyn chuckled quietly and exhaled.

"Its nothing to worry about, now is it?"

"It isn't? It's definitely weird mom! I feel li-"

Lenny felt a strong grip on her shoulder, startling her.
