Chapter 19 - The Coup Begins

When the coup began, the Priesthood of the Earth Bull tore through the palace like a behemoth's brand through the clay. The palace guard fought them with Frumentius' father even managing to wound Sarpedon, causing him to fall behind Minos, whom Taurus had instructed Sarpedon to kill if the coup was a success.

Alas, the wound was not fatal. It was a minor inconvenience at the most and it was the fact that the wound was not fatal that ultimately cost the Captain of the Guard his life.

Sarpedon was eight and forty twelvemonths of age and stood at a height of six feet. Like every member of the native populace, he was olive skinned with high cheekbones and almond-shaped blue eyes and like any clergyman he was completely bald. He was somewhat muscular with uneven eyes, the right eye being three inches lower than the left. The wound had been inflicted to his right leg, resulting in a limp.

As he knelt down to look at the fallen Captain of the Guard, Sarpedon eyed the dragon necklace hanging around his neck. Such a thing was not fit to be worn by someone descended from immigrants! It had to be his, it must be his, it would be his!

Snatching the necklace from the neck of the cadaver, Sarpedon and looked around the hallway. With all that was going on around him, there was no sign of Minos. He had lost him, but he'd find him again. He had his orders. If Minos was not killed during the coup, then he was not allowed to enjoy victory. If Minos was killed during the coup, then Sarpedon was to report back to Taurus. Only then would Taurus take his place in the fighting.

Seeing the frail cupbearer hiding in a doorway, a malevolent smile spread across Sarpedon's countenance. Here was someone to kill.
