"Don't think too much about it Luke, at least you managed to save one life." Charlotte said that because she saw Luke's face, which was depressed again, remembering what happened last night.
"Alright, looks like I have to go since I still have some business to do. How about you sis?" Charles asked her sister.
"I have something to discuss with Luke so I'll be staying here for a while."
"Is that so… then see you in a few days mate." Charles left us both waving his hand.
"So, what do you want to talk about Charlotte?" Luke asked Charlotte who was outside her cell who was still watching her brother walk out of this prison.
"I don't know where it started but, I'm just confused how someone like you can survive this incident?"
"Perhaps, just luck in my opinion."
"Are you just going to give up your life for free when you say you want to get freedom?" When Charlotte said that Luke stopped his hand that was about to open the lunch box given by the girl and looked at him.
"Then I ask you, are you satisfied with just living behind a wall while being haunted by the fear caused by the vampires?"
"Of course, because I value my life very much."
"Is that so… Did you ever get bored of living the same life, doing the same thing every day and seeing the same thing every day?" When he asked that question he looked at Charlotte who was silent as if she was thinking and searching for an answer to the question.
"I thought about it once but, when I thought about it and searched for the answer I never came to a conclusion."
"Charlotte, how long do you think this great wall will protect us? Are you just going to forget what happened five years ago, ah sorry because you are a noble who is busy with your social affairs so. Just forget what I just said."
"What do you mean Luke!!? You think because I'm a noble I ignore the common people? Do you know where Charles and I were five years ago?"
"I don't know how your life is but, I just want to make one thing clear to you. It's not like the wall that protects humanity from vampires will last forever." There was a slightly surprised expression on Charlotte who had just heard the words of the man behind the cell.
"Let me tell you one thing Charlotte, I really hate you nobles who treat ordinary people like dog shit. Have you nobles ever thought at least once of a commoner? Have you ever thought about the many security forces around you when the commoners desperately defended themselves from the attacks five years ago?" Charlotte just silently looked down when I said that.
"You nobles only think about your lives. When the wall was breached five years ago where were you? When us commoners living in district 25 were savagely slaughtered by them where were you? When there are no more humans left in district 25 you come like a savior hero."
Luke threw the lunch box that Charlotte had given him at the rusty iron bars which immediately surprised Charlotte and looked at him with a mixed expression.
"Until when are we silent and slowly killed by them? How many more victims must fall just for the sake of respecting the life you mean Charlotte? Tell, Charlotte how much more do you need?"
"I-I don't know."
"I value my life more than anyone else in the vampire hunter squad. Because you are just cowards who are silent without doing anything. Leave me alone Charlotte, and also I thank you for your concern."
"See you later Luke."
Luke turned his back on Charlotte who left his cell. Shortly after that he heard the sound of footsteps approaching towards the cell where he was being held.
"Didn't I tell you to leave why did you come back again?"
Luke looked back and he saw the person standing outside the iron bars of his cell was not Charlotte but Captain Daniel who was standing in front of him right now.
"It seems that your words made the girl sad Ainswald."
"Captain, can you leave me alone?"
"Don't worry, I just wanted to take a look at your situation. And it turns out you made a girl put on a sad face."
"I-I didn't mean it like that I just-…" Luke couldn't find the right words to say to Captain Daniel.
"Captain, do you think what I said was wrong?"
"Not completely wrong and not completely right Ainswald. Everyone has their own opinion but, I think you're just a naive kid who gets emotional without thinking about the feelings of the people around you." Luke who was listening to that was speechless when the Captain said that he was a naive person.
"There is nothing wrong with wanting freedom but everyone's definition of freedom is different. And I think most of the vampire hunter squad are just cowards who don't dare to act differently from you Ainswald. I applaud your actions for your words on the wall and your initiative to save the refugees."
"I can't save them all Captain."
"You and I are not heroes of Ainswald. I never thought of myself as a hero because I was too late to save you five years ago. We are only human, keep that in mind Ainswald."
"Captain, I was very grateful to you when you saved my life five years ago."
"There is no need to thank Ainswald, that is part of my duty. That's all I want to say see you in few days." Captain Daniel left the cell where Luke was and he paused.
"Don't forget to apologize to that girl Ainswald."
"Yes Sir!" Luke saluted Captain Daniel who slowly walked away from his cell.
The holding cell which was smaller than the soldiers' dormitory room was where Luke was now languishing for the next few days or maybe weeks or months. If you think too much it will only become a burden and there is currently nothing he can do. The size of this cell is very narrow, there is only a shabby mattress with mold, a bucket that might be used for prisoners who want to defecate and an old sink where the water is most likely cloudy. Because there was nothing he could do right now Luke was laying on the old bed. The surface of the mattress was very rough and the mattress was already thin as if he was sleeping on the ground full of rocks.
