Chapter 3 - Chapter 3-Fractions are hard

It was dismissal time and Bea was there to pick up Allister as she promised.

"Before I came to pick you up I got doughnuts!"

Bea opened the doughnut box and let allister pick what doughnut he wanted. Allister picked a chocolate doughnut with cream filling, and Bea picked a long, chocolate doughnut. Then they started walking home.

"So, how was your day at school? I was told that you got in trouble on the bus."

Allister forgot about what happened on the bus.

"My school day was okay, I guess." Allister said. Allister was just saying that because he didn't want Bea to feel bad for him, but really it was the worst day of school. Allister took a bite of his doughnut.

"Do you have lots of homework today?" Bea asked.

"Not really…" Allister answered. "I have 1 page of math homework and that's it."

"Well good for you. Maybe we can do something fun later." Bea told Allister. Bea took another bite of her doughnut.

Then they arrived at home. Bea started making some pie and Allister started his homework.

"½ is equal to ___. I don't understand that at all!" said Allister. "Maybe the answer is 12?" Allister wrote 12 as the first answer. Then Bea came.

"How are you doing your homework?" asked Bea.

"Fractions are hard! I don't understand them!" Said Allister.

"Okay, let me see…" Bea took the paper and looked at it.

"You're lucky that you know your math stuff," said Allister.

"Woah, who said I was good at math. I was never really good at math." Bea said.

"Really!" Allister exclaimed.

"Ya, in school I always got D's in math. But everyone is good at different things, and math doesn't need to be one of those things.'' Allister looked up at his sister.

"Now, fractions are quite simple." Bea said. She walked over to the oven and took out the pie. She took the pie to the table along with a knife.

"Now, you see this pie?"

"Ya…"

"If I cut it in half, it's a half." Bea said as she cut the pie.

"Okay…"

"Now, if I cut it again, it's a fourth. If I remove 2 slices it's also a half. Do you get it?"

"Kindoff," said Allister, but he didn't understand it at all. They practiced for 30 minutes and Allister still didn't understand.

"Okay, I'm going to go make dinner. What would you like to eat? Bea asked.

"Ramen noodles!" exclaimed Allister.

Bea started working on dinner.

"I hate fractions, they're hard." Allister whispered.

Allister got out of his chair and started walking to the door quietly.

"Sneak, sneak, Bea can't see me, sneak, sneak." Allister said.

"Where are you going Ali? Ya, I heard you, you probably would've been more successful if you weren't talking.'' Bea said.

"I just wanted to go on a little walk in the graveyard." Allister said.

"No graveyard until you finish your homework." Bea Said.

"Fine…" said Allister.
