Chapter 13 - Fractured Harmony

Seven years of harmony and tranquility had passed until Iris turned seven. Then, chaos erupted when Kwame celebrated his daughter's birthday but neglected to acknowledge Eve's children. Resentment began to simmer in Eve's heart. Perplexed, she wondered why Kwame would do such a thing, feeling that he had never truly loved her children, whereas she had consistently shown affection and warmth towards Iris.

Initially, Eve hesitated to confront Kwame, but her curiosity eventually got the better of her. She decided to address the issue with him. As a doctor and owner of his hospital, Kwame's schedule was unpredictable. He often returned home late, but occasionally arrived earlier when work was slow. On this particular day, Eve intentionally didn't prepare dinner, fueled by anger.

Kwame arrived home early, craving food. Expecting a warm welcome from Eve, he was taken aback by her furious expression. She instructed the children to leave, wanting to speak to Kwame alone. Still reeling from the cold reception, Kwame requested food, knowing Eve was aware of his hunger after a long day without eating. Eve abruptly shushed him.

Baffled, Kwame calmly asked why she silenced him. "Do you have a problem with my children?" Eve demanded. "Have I ever mistreated Iris or spoken ill of her? I love her equally, sharing gifts without hesitation." She paused, awaiting Kwame's response.

Here's an expanded continuation of the story:

Kwame's expression softened, sensing the depth of Eve's hurt. "Of course not, Eve. You've always been an amazing stepmother to Iris. I celebrate her birthday because it's a special day for her, just like we celebrate the children's birthdays. It's not about favoritism, but about creating individual memories."

Eve's gaze lingered, searching for sincerity. "Then why didn't you include my children in the celebration? It felt like you were excluding them, like they're not as important."

Kwame's eyes widened in understanding. "Oh, Eve, I had no idea it would be perceived that way. I should have included them. Can I make it up to them, to you? Let's plan a special family celebration soon."

Eve's anger began to to rise. All what Kwame said sounded absolutely rubbish to her. She was so furious that she didn't utter a word.
