Chapter 16 - Running out of Time

As Jason reached the top of the stairs where the tapestry separated the hallway from the rest of the church, Jason decided to shoot a small blast of flame.

Jason stood back with his shield raised, ready to defend himself in case anything charged through to attack him. After igniting it in a surge of flame the tapestry quickly crumbled to ashes, revealing an empty church.

After glancing around Jason stepped out of the hallway leading to the catacombs and made way for the ex-prisoners to come out.

As they all began running for the front entrance to leave this accursed place, one of the men stopped and grabbed his arm. Jason glanced at him, recognizing him as his quest target, Henry Lokisdu.

"Sir, I never received your name." Henry hastily stated.

"Thanataion."

"Thank you, Thanataion, I will always be in your debt." He then looked down at the hallway and muttered while gritting his teeth, "Kill those B*stards for me will you?"

With the completion of the previous quest, it had gifted him experience points and a rare treasure chest. Every treasure chest generated by The System had a guaranteed item at the same tier of the chest, and a small chance to gift an item of a higher tier.

Completing this quest and the bonus objective was fantastic for Jason because this gave him the opportunity to obtain a guaranteed rare item, and possibly even a platinum tiered item. Whatever Jason obtained from this chest would, without a doubt, be of great use to him in completing the follow-up quest issued by the system.

When he saw the last notification The System gave him, he felt an intense sense of urgency to complete the new quest that The System had given him.

Monsters, just like items, were broken into tiers. There were common monsters, special monsters, elite monsters, special elite monsters, Lesser Monsters, Greater Monsters, and unique monsters. Each step up in tier was a qualitative leap in power for the monsters.

The System had notified him that a Greater Demon was in the process of being summoned which had turned a difficult quest into an almost impossible one. If he couldn't stop the quest before the Demon was summoned, he could only kiss his butt good-bye and create a new account. All the effort he had given this past day would go down the drain with the achievements and the titles being lost forever.

Jason saw Leviticus patting one of the men on his shoulder and pointing in the general direction of the guard house. The man then began sprinting in that direction as Leviticus walked back to Jason.

"I'm coming with you." Exclaimed Leviticus, a fiery light of hatred igniting in his eyes.

"No." Stated Jason firmly, turned his back and began walking back inside the catacombs. After what happened with Steven betraying him after having trusted him for so long, Jason had no interest in forming new friendships or trusting someone again. He had lost his life the last time he did and he didn't have time to waste in this new life.

"Thanataion, your not stopping me. Those men nearly killed me, and they robbed me of everything I had." Continued Leviticus.

"I don't care. I'll bring you your stuff back." Jason coldly spoke as he walked a little faster. He had to get there before the greater demon was summoned.

Leviticus continued to follow Jason, "You need my help."

"No, I don't."

"You would've died back there if it hadn't been for me."

"I wouldn't have been in that mess if it wasn't for you."

"True… Granted I still got you out of it. Without me you plan would've failed."

Jason shrugged his shoulders, "I would've come up with a different plan."

Jason finally arrived back at the junction and was trying to decide which way to go.

"I think we should go that way." Leviticus stated, pointing down the far hallway to right.

Letting out a big sigh, Jason asked "You're not going to leave me be are you?"

"Nope." Leviticus simply stated with a smirk on his face, he knew he won.

As he lifted his hand to point to the far-right hallway, Jason stated "Then go down that hallway." He then pointed to the middle hallway, "I'll go this way."

Leviticus stared at him for a moment, wondering what this man was thinking. He knew that they would have a higher chance of success if they worked together, but Thanataion seemed completely against that.

"Very well, good luck." Leviticus began lightly running down the far hallway with his bow and an arrow at the ready.

Watching Leviticus leave, Jason let out some pent breath. He really didn't know if he could trust Leviticus or not, something didn't seem right about him.

Unbeknownst to Jason, Leviticus was wondering the exact same thing about Jason.

Looking at his interface, Jason activated the reward icon of the quest he had just completed. With a flash of light, a large waist high treasure chest appeared in front of Jason. This chest was just like the old-fashioned treasure chests that people would see in pirate movies except the only difference being that a faint blue radiance surrounded the chest.

Jason rubbed his hands together, a hint of greed flashing in his eyes. He quickly walked over to the chest and quickly opened it. No loading bars or tricky locks to crack, just a simple lift of the lid.

As he opened the lid, blueish white light erupted from the chest, illuminating the room. Looking into the chest, Jason could only let his jaw drop in awe at what lay before him.
