Chapter 2 - 2: Day Off

"Sir?" Dark almost black eyes stare back at her expectantly.

He sighs in irritation fixing his unwavering gaze on the nervous looking woman, "Yes miss Brown?" She couldn't miss the annoyance in his voice, even if she tried, and she did try.

With her heart going ten miles per second she braced herself for the worst and asked.

"Can I leave early today and, I need a day off tomorrow" She rushed the words out which made it come out in a mumble, a really fast mumble.

The same empty dark eyes stare unblinking at her, waiting for her to repeat what she said without actually voicing the words out.

Dressed in a black straight skirt and nude blouse that was tucked in, Elena takes in small deep breaths discreetly so she doesn't break down in front of him.

Her boss isn't necessarily, evil? No not the right word, she wouldn't call him evil, but he isn't the most welcoming person in the world either, she could count how many times she has seen him smile, and she has been working for him for over six months.

"I have things to do miss Brown, can you get this over with?" Oh, what he is though, is rude definitely. She tries hard not to hand it to him at times, most times even for two reasons only she needs the job and he pays well.

"I asked if I could leave early and take a day off tomorrow." She repeated slower.

Working in Walton inc has been great, the environment is employee friendly if she does say so herself. She doesn't exactly have any good experience but she has not been treated half as good anywhere else as she has ion the past months since she started there, the only problem she has is her boss, the CEO, the workaholic CEO, and being his secretary, she had to be a workaholic too.

He doesn't have any other assistants so she was basically that along with being his secretary, she knows she couldn't get a day off without asking a week prior so she would manage his meetings and whatnot, meaning, her day off shouldn't interfere with his work, and sick days, well she has those too but she would still have to clear his schedule from home or find someone to fill in for her.

"Tomorrow?" He asked, his eyes on her, daring her to confirm what she said. He heard but he wanted to make sure.

She swallowed visibly running her palm down her skirt, everything she told herself about not looking inferior in his presence flew out of the window that moment.

She gathers the courage to meet his eyes again only to find him already watching her, her whole body shivered but she ignored the feeling and forced out a reply "Yes sir,"

A minutes passes without either of them saying a word, she clears her throat softly and from her peripheral she saw when he nodded, the thoughtful look falling off and his face going back to the blank one she was used to.

"You can take the whole week off," he finally spoke and her eyes widened into slits, that wasn't what she expected, at all!

"-You can use that time to look for a new job." Her heart dropped at that, it was too good to be true, she knew but, there was a small part of her that hoped.

When she didn't reply, he nodded, "Thought as much, now get back to work Miss Brown." He turned back to the papers he was reading, she was dismissed with that.

Elena stomped out of the office muttering curses under her breath, she sat back grudgingly at her desk thinking of multiple ways to poison her boss and how to get away with it. The ringing of a phone interrupted her murderous thoughts.

"Wouldn't have worked out anyways," she muttered lowly before picking the landline on her desk, like the person on the other line could see she plastered on a fake smile and spoke in the nicest voice she could muster.

"Walton inc, Elena Brown speaking,"

"Take the rest of the day off but make sure you're here at eight prompt tomorrow," Her boss's deep always bored voice spoke all at once before the line went dead.

A small smile made its way to her face as she kept the phone back and gathered her things. She would plot the murder later, she told herself as she left the premises and stopped a cab.

"Are you sure about this?" Melanie asked thrusting the large paperback into Elena's ready hands. She adjusted her position on the bed folding her legs beneath her, her eyes narrowed into slits looking at her friend.

Elena didn't look at her only nodding too busy tying her brunette locks in a high ponytail.

"I don't really have a choice Mel, it is best I do this." She drops her hands down with a soft sigh.

"It is just one day that he needs me to come in early," Melanie started to talk but she doesn't even let one word leave her lips. "He is an asshole yes but he saved me and I owe it to him, we made a deal."

Melanie still didn't look convinced but she nodded letting it go.

"Good luck then," Elena nodded, pushing her hands into her pocket and feeling around, she nodded in satisfaction when she heard the jiggle of her keys.

"Did he tell you why though?" Elena sighed tiredly and shaking her head from side to side, a look crossed over her features before she forced a smile and reached for her jacket, she pulled it off the hanger and put it on.

"No,"

"I really hope he didn't do something stupid," it was very plausible she thought but a word was a word and she has already given hers, everything else can come after.

"I'm almost done with him" the words were a soft whisper, when Melanie didn't say anything after that she walked out of the small bedroom.

"Bye, don't wait up." She spoke loudly and rushed out of the door and out of the apartment building altogether, almost running into a woman who lived two doors down from her.
