"O, Rose, I gave them to her. Her name is Sarah." Jack said calmly, but to his greatest surprise, she walked to the front of the wooden chair they were sitting and slapped Sarah hard on her cheek, scolding her at the same time.
"How dare you!"
Sarah placed her hand immediately on that part of her cheek as her eyes became full of tears that would not stop flowing down her cheek, "I… I am…!" she tried apologizing and stuttered with words that suddenly became difficult to pronounce.
"What did you do that for?" Jack shouted at his wife the second he could no longer stand her actions.
"I am busy finding a way to feed my kids out here in the wild before I can finally get them to move out of this city safely and you are busy feeding this little twit with the little you were able to get!" She ranted and made Sarah look like a menace to herself.
"Serves her right!" Maria rumbled quietly and folded her hand around her chest as she looked at Sarah in disgust even before getting to see the face of the little girl, because Sarah backed Maria and her younger sister at the moment.
"Don't say that." Frida, who was a bit more merciful, whispered, using her shoulders to hit Maria gently on her left arm while they both kept looking at the little girl and at their mom and dad, who continued quarreling until the little girl ran away from them.
"Hey, Sarah, come back." Jack exclaimed and chased after Sarah without waiting to respond to the next question his wife asked, for he had brought his head down at that very moment, only to notice she had fled.
"Jack…" Rose shouted to get his attention and see if he could at least stop trying to run after a strange girl he had just met in the open and return to them, but he did not. So, she turned to look at her daughters with a few words in her mouth, she led them away without even considering their opinion as yet. "Let us go, quickly." She said authoritatively.
"Sarah, wait up!" Jack screamed while she was about running up the bridge on foot and she stopped not because she wanted to, but because the wound on her left foot had opened and she was beginning to bleed again with so much pain. She turned to him and cried, saying, "Go home to your family. You have a family and I don't! Why can't you let me be and stop making me see how bad my life has become?"
"Don't say that, Sarah. You are part of my family now; I can't let you wander in this city all alone after knowing your story and that I am capable of helping you. So, come on, Sarah. Come with me." He persisted and kept taking a step closer to meeting her, but she was not willing to go with him anymore.
"Get away from me!" Sarah yelled, lowering her eyebrows and making her forehead wrinkle before turning around to continue running.
"No, Sarah!" He screamed in fear and ran after her to catch her because she felt dizzy the minute she turned to continue running and before she knew it, she had fallen to the ground and fainted. When Jack got to meet her where she fell, he discovered she had lost a lot of blood and so he quickly carried her in his arms and ran towards the camp again.
"Open the back door!" Jack wailed with a visible tear in his eyes, though not much, as he ran towards his car, ignoring the people who were turning their necks towards him. Frida helped open the door immediately while Maria and Rose were still busy staring at him on his way towards them as if they did not hear what he said. Frida knew it was none of their business whether there was trouble or not. All they were concerned about was themselves and how they were going to go to another city and have their royal life back because Jack was stinkingly rich.
"Dad, she is bleeding!" Frida, who was six years old, cried the minute she saw the left foot of Sarah.
"Yes, she is. Help me pray she doesn't die before we get to any hospital nearby. Here, grab her arms for me." Jack sputtered as he hurriedly kept Sarah leaning on Frida's body. He knew Maria would not even think of helping out because she always behaves classy and badly mannered.
"A hospital!" Maria exclaimed, shrugging and feeling fed up already.
"Yes, a hospital." Jack responded the second he sat on the driver's seat and held on to the steering wheel to drive.
"But dad, you promised we were going to be home before dark!" She whined in a way to make him change his mind and listen to her as usual, for he had been acting each time she cried for anything she wanted, but he was very quick to reply to her without thinking about it. Meanwhile, he was still trying to reverse the car on his way out of the campground.
"Yes, I did, Maria. But the situation on the ground has changed everything. So, change of plans, alright."
"All for one ugly looking twit!" Maria exclaimed and frowned with arms wrapped around her chest as she threw her face out of the window.
"She isn't a twit, Maria! And just because your mom called her a twit does not mean you should now continue with that. Her name is Sarah, got it!" He scolded in a loving manner, knowing that he was also talking to his own daughter and not someone else's.
"Thank God she is still breathing." Frida soliloquized as she kept patting Sarah on her yellow flaxen hair and admiring her beauty over again, and glad that Sarah was nothing close to being ugly, as Maria had ignorantly said.
The entire time, Rose was quiet and did not bother saying a word to Jack because she was busy thinking about how she was going to kill the little girl herself if she happened to survive the moment without dying.
