Chereads / Brain Eater in the Apocalypse / Chapter 30 - False Panic

Chapter 30 - False Panic

Since amongst all of them he has the slowest build-up in his insanity stat, then there should be an explanation for that and his attention falls to the innate passive skill he got at the start.

Pati still remembers clearly that the Chaos sensed two anomalies within him.

Those two anomalies resulted in him gaining the Brain Eater class and also the Zombie Mind passive skill which is also maxed level, 'From its name, I bet the slow build-up is because of my Zombie Mind passive skill...'

After briefly thinking, he then glanced at the others and said, "Let's find a place to rest first"

The six of them went to a steak restaurant on the side of the street which has an entrance made of teak wood so it's very sturdy, there are also no windows aside from the second floor. Because of that, this restaurant should be relatively safe.

Upon entering the restaurant they are greeted by the floor covered with red carpets.

From the fancy interior that brings out a classy feeling from the red and golden mix color, this restaurant should be a very expensive one and certainly Pat has never come here.

With the money he gets from being a bookkeeper and also a part-time tutor, he's not that well-off.

Most of his money goes down the drain for paying the rent, utilities, food, and such. All that is left he saved in case of an emergency, so he doesn't have spare to go to a restaurant. At best he will treat himself to a fast food restaurant, that's it.

In truth, it's not that he can't afford to eat here. He just doesn't want to waste money.

Pati grew up in an orphanage far away from this city, he has three friends there that are close.

The four of them always stick together and share their minds with each other, one day they decided that they don't want to keep living in the orphanage after seeing a commercial on tv about a beautiful beach somewhere that they don't know.

Captivated by the beach, the four of them begged the reverend mother to let them work.

Of course, at first, the reverend's mother doesn't let them and just told them to be good until someone adopted them, but Pati and his friends didn't like that so they persist. They keep asking the reverend's mother until eventually, she accepted.

Since the four of them are quite close with the reverend's mother, her heart finally melted.

Starting from helping a small restaurant nearby by cleaning the dishes and such, they started to gain money that they will save little by little until they eventually years later settle enough money to leave the Orphanage.

With the procedure in place, orphans are not allowed to leave.

But with the approval of the reverend's mother they finally embark on their journey of living in the real world, they kept sticking together like a real family.

Pati at some point made quite a bit of money from selling fried brains.

He started picking up this line of work when he tasted his first fried brain sold on the side of the street, and with the money he made he can live out a normal teenage life and even manage to get a scholarship to the university he's currently in.

Although the major is not something that he's interested in, this is a chance for him to be normal.

The other orphanage friends are still living in the old city he was in while he moved into a better city, they supported him in his own journey and have been separated for years now.

So if anything, Pati wanted to check on them.

Judging from what he's seen all the way through here, it's hard to say if they're still alive but remembering how his friends are like Pati has high hopes, 'May god reunite us once again, I'm sure you guys will be fine', he thought.

While the other rest, Pati decided to check the entire restaurant in case there was a Zombie.

Pati has the lowest Insanity stat points so he's going to be the one sweeping the entire restaurant from the first floor all the way to the second floor, it's not that big so it's going to be fine.

Before he check the entire restaurant, Pati approached Jeff, "Keep an eye on them"

"Don't worry, if they try something I'll cripple them and then you can then kill them", Jeff replied giving two thumbs up to Pati, and this can't help but make him chuckle.

It's because of the way Jeff said it, "Fine by me, that works..."

After talking to Jeff briefly, Pati gave a warning look to the two men before he walks away.

The walls inside the restaurant are filled with fancy glasses, and the chairs and tables are black and white amplifying the classical feeling of the restaurant. A huge chandelier is hanging from the ceiling right in the middle of the place just beside the stairs.

While scanning the entire first floor of the restaurant, Pati finds nothing that catches his eyes.

'Although it's been a few days, there is no sign of mayhem here. I don't believe that during the black wind this restaurant is empty', Pati thought while keeping his guard up.

On the far right near the corner, Pati saw a door that should lead to the kitchen.

Since the entire place is open as the others can even still look at Pati, the only places Zombies can use to hide are behind the stairs or even underneath the tables that are covered with a white fancy table cloth.

After checking those places, Pati head to the kitchen and finds that it's completely empty.

Pati went inside the meat storage room and finds the insides still many frozen types of meat in it, he closed it back again before he got out of the kitchen and headed to the second floor.

The others are sitting together except for the two men that sat at another table.

While looking at Pati who is slowly ascending the stairs that are shaped like a spiral, the leader on the side suddenly said, "Hey, are you guys from the Jayarta International University?"

"Yep, we're still students", Jeff replied nonchalantly while stretching his body.

Hearing this, the leader nodded his head while looking at Dinda's golden hair, "Figured as much. So what's the deal with him? Is he somekind of a big shot in the university?"

"Actually he's just a normal student, certainly not one of the cool kids"

"Unlike me, who is a part of the coolest gang in the university. Pati is only a regular student that probably spent his days studying and going home, so no, he's not a big shot", Jeff replied with a rather loud voice.

But when the leader was about to ask again,

Crash!

Jeff's head got hit by a thick flower vase that came out of nowhere, it landed solidly on his head making him fall from the chair to the ground.

"Who the fu-", before he can finish cursing, Jeff saw Pati looking at him from the second floor.

Since the second floor is only half of the building, Pati can look down from the second floor just by the shining steel fence. Pati heard what Jeff said since he's more like shouting than saying, "I heard that you piece of shit! Say that again and I'll come down and break ripped your mouth off"

"Come on dude! You're taking all of the spotlights, let me have this!", Jeff retorted back.

Hearing both of them arguing like a little kid fighting over candy, Dinda and Salsa chuckle as they are too stressed by what's happening around them and this kind of humor is great for them.

Ignoring Jeff, Pati turns around and focuses on checking the second floor.

Unlike the first floor which is open and has long tables for many customers at once, the second floor has a table for two which should indicate that the second floor is for dining couples.

These tables here are also divided into sections that give them some privacy.

When Pati take a step to look around the second floor checking the same place as he did on the first floor, he suddenly tripped but regain his balance almost instantly. The floor is covered with carpet, so it's weird for him to get tripped like this.

Pati looks down at the carpet while squinting his eyes,

Upon closer inspection, he realized that there are some parts of the carpet that is wet and some parts that it's not, he kneel on one knee to touch the carpet and realized that its blood.

Since the carpet is dominated by the color red, the blood merges with the color.

Now that he realized the wetness on the carpet is blood, he now noticed the darker red color on the carpet that started from the base of the stairs all the way to the second floor. The trail then kept going, Pati follows the trail and finds himself in front of the restroom.

At the point of the bathroom, the ground becomes sparkling marbles.

Blood becomes evident in the sparkling cream-colored marble, this alone is enough to tell Pati that there's something inside the restroom. Without a doubt that it's a Zombie or perhaps Zombies.

Pati unsheathed his new sword and hold it tightly in his hand.

Just as he takes out the sword, he hesitates in checking the restroom, 'This sword is too long for this tight of a space, I can't fight efficiently in there', Pati thought with a frown.

With how cramp the restroom is, there's no way he can swing around a sword.

Looking around the place, Pati's eyes landed on a knife on the table. It's an eating knife but it's better than swinging a sword in the restroom, he also grabs one of the chair's legs before ripping it off.

From the Street Fighter Champion passive skill, he becomes knowledgable in this.

Before even entering the restroom to face whatever Zombies that lie inside, Pati already knows what kind of situation will likely happen in a fight inside a cramped place.

The chair's leg is necessary to make a distance, it's perfect in length not too long or short.

After the necessary preparation that he deemed necessary, Pati leans his Peacekeeping Sword Grinder on the wall beside the restroom before he slowly approaches the door with the knife in his right hand and a chair's leg in his other hand.

Slowly inching closer to the restroom, Pati can already hear a subtle sound from the inside.

Pushing the door of the restroom open, Pati tries to not make too much noise to peek inside. But even if the Zombies inside heard him instantly, he's ready to fend them off with his maxed senses.

Upon opening the door, Pati saw two creatures inside the restroom.

The light is still on inside the restaurant and also the restroom, even the music playing inside the restroom is still playing in the background while these two creatures are munching on what seems to be a human corpse.

Half of the corpse is gone, eaten by these grey creatures that are big but don't look like Zombies.

Pati squints his eyes while trying to decipher what these grey creatures are, even with the lights on it's still hard to see what these creatures really are.

Zombies should vaguely resemble their former selves, but these creatures don't.

But when Pati takes a good look at the two creatures a ridiculous thought came to mind as his expression turns pale, even if he's already overcome the fear of death these creatures can still strike fear into his heart.

One of the creatures stood up, its height almost reaches Pati's own height.

Without wasting any more time, Pati closed the door and immediately ran back down.

The others who are resting their minds and bodies saw the hurried steps coming from the direction of the stairs, they saw Pati power walking back to them with his expression paler than a corpse.

Seeing his expression, the others' bodies immediately tensed.

If whatever it is that Pati saw upstairs can even make him come back down in fear, then it must be a very scary Zombie that they won't hope to compete with, "Pati, what's wrong? What did you see?", Jeff asked hurriedly.

Dinda and Salsa also look at Pati with a hint of panic seeing Pati's expression.

Pati hurriedly approached them while unsheathing his sword before he sat down with them, the others are looking at him questioningly, "I- I don't think I can fight the creatures upstairs..."

"What?! How could that be?!", Jeff exclaimed in surprise.

Even against the bird Zombie that is hulkingly big, Pati doesn't become this fearful.

This alone makes the others immediately stand up from their seats intending to leave, but seeing this Pati stopped them, "No, no, it's not that the creatures are too powerful for me..."

"Then what is it? Why can't you fight them?", Jeff asked again.

Pati seems to be unwilling to say it out loud which makes the others curious and even a bit frustrated, after a moment he then finally takes a deep breath and said, "It's not that they're too strong, but I just can't..."

"Just tell us what the damn creatures are?! Stop circling around, get to the point!", Jeff said grabbing his hair in frustration, he was already panicking because of Pati's fearful expression.

With that, Pati finally said after his entire body shivers remembering the creatures.

"It's cockroaches... and they're fucking big..."
