Synopsis

Chapter 1 - the incident

Since young, I never saw myself becoming a teacher. I was somewhat of an introvert, and I was not so good with kids. But here I am in a classroom teaching history none less.

I was not a qualified teacher. Even now, I know that I only obtained my teaching certificate because someone paved the way for me.

Even the principal of this high school was someone close to my parents.

I was in the middle of the classroom going through my notes and holding a carnet in my only hand.

Yes, I only had one hand since an accident five years ago. I lost my parents, my girlfriend, and my left hand, and  I was only left with a part of my former self.

I looked at the student around me before sighing.

I was not made for this job.

Somewhere half asleep, others were cheating while ignoring me. There was only one student attentive enough.

It was a pretty girl with short black hair. She was taking note earnestly.

I could not help but think that if I had remained like her, I would have realized my dreams someday. But things happened. Things always happen.

Despite all their actions, I noticed. I did not say anything. It is not like I cared. I was only doing this job for money's sake after all.

I did not like history. Yes, it was a vast field. In the past, I would have found it interesting to study the history of some social group or country. I had been more interested in the field of mythologies. But it was just the past, in the end. Also, I was not that great when it come to remembering dates.

A student was sitting at the back of the room next to the window. I could not remember his name. He was rather tall and handsome but he was also one of the students with the most frustrating attitude. He was listening to a radio program in the middle of my lesson like every other time.

I frowned a bit, hesitating whether I should confront him or not. I had rather not considered the lack of respect that the students had shown me since I started to teach them. I had long decided not to care only spending time preparing my lessons and dispensing them.

I managed to hear the voice of the female host. She was talking about a strange phenomenon that had been ongoing for some time now.

People, and places disappearing all around the country mysteriously.

They will disappear in the middle of a storm, an earthquake, or a strange mist, Leaving strange inscriptions on the ground.

People were already panicking, thinking about the apocalypse or whatnot like an alien invasion.

" It can happen anywhere" I mumbled to myself only to cover my mouth, the next instant.

The whole classroom grew dark as if night had suddenly fallen. For a moment there seemed to be something similar to an earthquake that made me lose my footing and fall to the ground.

I almost fell first on my earth. The student was screaming around me. Some girls and some guys too asked what was happening.

I should have been the one, calming them. But I was unable to do so.

At this moment, the image of the accident Five years ago surfaced in front of me.

" no! It is not happening again" I cried out.

I only calmed somewhat when the earthquake subsided and the light went back.

The students looked at my embarrassing form sprawled on the ground. Some of them were already laughing at me but I did not have time to care about that.

I quickly stood up, going toward the window and what I saw made me shudder.

There was a navy blue sky and the horizon seemed tainted with a surreal purple glow that will make one feel mesmerized. But it was not the strangest thing.

" look! There is a forest outside" a student that was not far away from me said loud.

The others were fast to follow, coming to see. It was a known fact that this high school was situated in the center of the city. There was nothing close to this vast expense of green.

The three looked tall and thick. Some did not look smaller than this three-story building.

I had a bad feeling about this. I had a bad feeling about pretty much everything unknown.

I was starting to hyperventilate as my brain was trying to process what was happening. It was not that I did not have any idea. On the contrary, I was thinking about too many possibilities.

I quickly stepped back. I went to my suitcase. I took three pillule instead of one as prescribed and swallowed all the content from my bottle of mineral water.

I was growing to regret it later.

I wiped the sweat off my forehead as I started to calm myself...

" everyone! Step away from the windows" my roaring voice echoed inside the classroom.

The student looked toward me. I was not tall, and I had not lived healthily during the last year, so my appearance was not really convincing.

But I was the only adult here. And I felt the need to voice my concern...

Facing the unknown,  I had always expected the worse.

Perhaps I was wrong and there was no danger but I did not want to bet it.

" Something strange is happening out there and I don't think that it is a good thing to stay close to the windows," I said trying to be as convincing as possible.

I did not know how to react after an earthquake, even more so after one as strange as this one. But, I felt that standing best to the windows like that for so long was not a great idea.

Some students seemed to think that what I said made sense. So they regained their place.

" stay calm. I am going..."

I was still trying to talk while arranging my next set of actions only to be interrupted by a student.

" look there is something red. It is moving" it was the same guy who had called his classmates earlier.

I was somewhat pissed saying that some were going back toward the windows.

" I said..." I was going to say something when I suddenly heard a sound I was too familiar with.

The sound of glasses exploding.

The window exploded sending glass shards everywhere.

I instinctively closed my eyes. When I opened them again I was shocked. I saw one of my a student that was close to the window fall slowly. There was a hole on the side of his ear near the chick. And I could see a projectile the size of an orange embedded inside.

I gulped a mouth full of saliva. I only had one tough at that moment.

" Luckily it was not me"
