Chapter 8 - Chapter 7

-Evelyn's POV

I throw the dart without looking and I finish my beer.

''Fine, you win,'' Kenneth sighs. ''Another round?''

''Sure, it's easy money,'' I grin.

Kenneth sticks his tongue out to me and he grabs the darts.

''We could also play just for fun.''

''Of course we can,'' I smile. ''Go stand in front of the board.''

''We're not drunk enough to play those kind of games,'' Kenneth grins. ''It's also too bad that your brother gave very strict orders. Misbehave in any way and you're out, so getting drunk doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.''

I want to open another bottle, but I reluctantly decide that it would better not to continue drinking. Not because I already had too much and not because of what Kenneth said. My brothers rules didn't apply to me since I wasn't a member of his pack.

However there were still the rules of the beta. For some reason Clairy and the little alpha really liked me. Clairy always asked me to do her hair or to play games with them and to my surprise I didn't mind any of it.

The beta was the one who had a problem with the pups spending so much time with me and it got bad. The thing with the beta was that he bottled everything up, while I had absolutely no problem with speaking my mind.

Correct that, I was a bitch!

Telling the beta that he should be happy that I watched the pups so often, since he and the alpha were barely around. It was true, but still a low blow since they were trying their hardest to make things work with my brothers pack.

Even I knew that I went too far by saying that. They beta lost his mate and the alpha was on his own, but they were both doing their best. That's why I dropped the attitude and tried again.

I told the beta that it would be difficult for me to keep my distance from the pups since we lived in the same house, but that I would try if he really didn't wanted me to be near them. Me changing my attitude made the beta change his. He said that he appreciated that I watched the pups , but that he did wanted to have a few ground rules.

No smoking, no drinking alcohol or swearing around the pups. Solid rules, but of course the beta had more. The pups had to be home before dark and in bed by eight p.m. I could basically do anything with them as long if we stayed in the square and that was not negotiable.

The pack house, the barns, the old grey one's shed and the yard, that was it. Any further and I had to ask for permission.

''What did you do to your new best friend? He is completely out!'' Kenneth grins as he nods at the sleeping little alpha on the couch.

''I needed to get something out of my room and I found him sitting on the steps. He was upset and telling his wolf that he didn't wanted to go inside, so I took him with me.''

''Do you know why he was so upset and where did you take him? I was here all day and I didn't see you two anywhere.''

Kenneth gives me this look as he hands me the darts and then a grin appears on his face.

''You took him beyond the square, didn't you?''

''How else was I going to cheer him up. He needed a little bit of fun, so I took him to the creek. He spend a full hour climbing and jumping off the same tree trunk. When he was finally done with that he tried to skip stones and lets just say he is still trying to master that skill.''

Kenneth makes a face when I again throw the darts without looking at the board and he gives up.

''And after that you came here to hide?''

''Pretty much,'' I grin. ''But he was also not ready to go back. I knew you were here and that it was your turn to cook. Hiding out here seemed like a good idea and it was. He ate a lot and you trying to teach him to play pool was very amusing.''

Kenneth tries to keep in an yawn and I look at the clock.

It was already after midnight? Fuck!

''If you don't see me tomorrow, I'm dead.'' I say softly as I lift up the sleeping little alpha.

''My money is on the beta,'' Kenneth smiles as he walks me out.

I start to make my way towards the pack house and I brace myself. There is nobody waiting for me in hall and the lights are turned off in the living room.

Please, let them all be asleep. Please, let them all be asleep!

I reach the stairs and just when I want to go up, I hear someone clearing his throat.

''Really, Evelyn?''

I turn around and I see alpha Hayden standing there whit his arms crossed.

He was pissed!

''Shh, you wake him!'' I whisper.

''Are you seriously shushing me?''

''You're the one who is raising his voice!'' I whisper yell.

''Because I'm mad!'' alpha Hayden now also whisper yells. ''Sage mind linked me in complete panic that she couldn't find Trevor anywhere. Then I started to panic, because he wasn't in any of his usual hiding spots. My five year old nephew was nowhere to be found and I thought something happened to him!''

I want to continue going upstairs, but alpha Hayden grabs my arm and he turns me around.

''I was worried sick about my nephew and you could have avoided that if you simply told anyone where you two went!''

Even if he wasn't an alpha a lot of shewolves would be interested in him. He had the body of a warrior, but then his wavy dark brown hair and those intense green eyes gave him a playful look.

He was not bad looking, like not at all!

''Well?'' alpha Hayden interrupts my thoughts about him.

''Well what?''

''Why didn't you say anything? You could have mind linked me or give me a call. Even a text or a note would have sufficed!''

''Can you make him shut up? He is starting to get on my nerves with his bitching.'' Sybil growls.

I'm trying not to smile, because I knew that would only make things so much worse.

''I don't use phones and the same goes for mind link, but I will leave a note next time. Goodnight.''

Alpha Hayden's eyes darken and I feel Sybil fighting me for control, but I couldn't give her that. Not before I put the little alpha to bed anyway.

So I yank my arm free and I hasty make my up the stairs. Clairy is sleeping, but it's a restless sleep. She keeps tossing and turning until I lay the little alpha next to her. I make sure that the blankets cover them both and I watch them for a moment.

They looked so sweet and then I remember I still had to deal with the alpha.

Fine, lets get this over with.

I walk out of the pups bedroom and I see alpha Hayden standing in the hallway.

''You can get mad at me all you want, but you can't raise your voice. They are asleep and Cleo just started to sleep through the nights again.''

Alpha Hayden doesn't say a thing. Instead he takes my hand and he makes me hold up my arm. I was wearing a shirt with short sleeves, so you could clearly see the mark of his hand on my arm. The alpha softly traces the mark with his fingers and he lets out a deep sigh.

''I'm sorry that I grabbed your arm, but you drive me crazy! You don't have any respect for me as an alpha or for traditional pack life and I can deal with that. I can deal with your normal rudeness, but I can't deal with this. You acting all annoyed with me, while you're the one who...''

I press my body hard against his and I look the alpha straight in the eyes.

''Then stop annoying me and go to sleep. Goodnight!''

I turn around and for a moment I think about going to my own room to sleep, but I change my mind.

Time to go for a run!
