I ran for the bedroom, not bothering to hide the injuries from my fight. Yes, it's going to freak him out, but we had to move, now! "Come on, kid!" He jumped out of bed with a moan; I didn't give him much time before I lifted him over my shoulder. "We have to leave, now."
He clung to me, the waterworks starting immediately. "Where are we going?! I'm scared!"
"Shh—" I hushed him, bouncing him instinctively.
"I'm not a baby!" he yelled, wiggling hard.
"Okay, okay!" I said, trying to hold on to him while he fought against me. "I didn't mean to treat you like a baby, but we really have to go."
A loud crashing noise sent a debilitating wave of fear over me. My heartbeat in my throat, the idea that there was nothing I could do nearly crippling me. "What was—" I clamped my hand over his mouth, shushing him with my finger.
