Dead Nightmare
Drew
Watching her eyes flutter open, the veil of death lifted, the tiny bit of light burned brightly. The faces of the dead would haunt me—especially hers. I had to think quickly, I can process that later. Right now, I had a task. The violent outburst before he disappeared inside was a surprise, but I could not ignore his plea—get her out of here.
Pulling off the heavy blanket, I discarded it quickly. "Come on, lass. We have to get you out of here." Instead of responding, she lulled her head to the side, then laid it against my shoulder. I stroked her cheek, her skin still bitterly cold. I was only wearing a t-shirt, but I would strip it and wrap her up in it. Even with our size difference, she would need more warmth—immediately. I knew going inside was dangerous, I would have to find another way out; I had walked so much of the building, but nothing outside.
