A second chance

I landed on the balcony with a crunch. My arms and legs ached, the sting of the impact sending waves into my brain. Rolling to my back, I started upwards. A bit of clarity finally came back, whatever that thing was trying to control me was missing. Half expecting him to follow, I waited a moment before I rolled to my feet.
Even with limited mobility, I was able to force myself back to the apartment. Not sure what the creature thought it would do, but running through a window, only to fall flat, wasn't very smart. Vincent didn't chase me, so maybe somehow he knew—or he just didn't care. I wanted to believe, after everything, he had some increment of love. I guess I kind of wanted him to care.
