The way it should be

Drew's standoffishness held through dinner. I gave up on asking what was wrong, I knew he would continue to play it off as nothing. I convinced myself it had to be about Gage, but that voice in the back of my head made sure I couldn't be comforted. It would remind me that I was the one causing his grief.
Excusing myself, I went to the kitchen to start on the tart dough. A few minutes of alone time is what he needed—just don't be in his way. Be useful!
The squeak of the door jolted me out of my stupor. "Hey, lass." He called out gently.
"Yes?" I held strong, not letting my self-doubt leak out.
He chuckled a bit. I could feel him standing right behind me now. "I think we need to talk."
