Chereads / My Mecha System / Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

Arthur continued like this for 6 years, hitting level 4 and level 5 in that time just with the daily quests. Strength stat was his choice to put his free stat points in hoping to accelerate his already quickly ageing body.

During this time Arthur learned a lot of things about his world. It was called Tera 4. Tera 4 was a newer colony world that was located on the fringes of the empire. Most of the population was retired military as the emperor granted every member of the military, upon discharge, a piece of land on a colony world in order to speed up expansion. Of course, not every service member took the offer since many had family on their home worlds to get back to, but that wasn't the case for everyone.

A lot of the military was comprised of orphans and people that were disowned from their family's' for crimes they may or may not have committed. These people always took the land in the hopes they could start over fresh out of the military.

The empire had been at peace for 30 years under Emperor Tiberius. There was no mandatory service time so Tiberius had a lot of leeway to reward the ones who signed up. Most servicemen didn't see much as far as action goes. Some local rebellions would pop up from time to time but were quickly crushed by the various mecha divisions that were assigned to the carrier ships. The long downtime in between planets is where a lot of people would meet the person they'd choose to start a family with after their service was up.

Arthurs' parents were two such people. They had met on the mecha carrier ship Tantive IV. His mother, Laura as he later found out, had met his father James while they both served their 6 year stint. Laura was in the administrative offices and kept track of all the requisition paper work while his father was a mecha mechanic. They had bumped into each other one day as James dropped off some requisition papers for new parts and had been inseparable since. Both had been orphans and their only option was the military in the hopes they could use it to start a new life after their time in service was done.

Arthur loved hearing stories of space and combat. He knew his parents were never in the thick of things, but they had experienced a life among the stars that Arthur could only dream about in his past life. As he got older he started asking more questions around mechas and his excitement only grew. He knew beyond a doubt that piloting a mecha was what he wanted more than anything.

He still remembered the titanic machine that he glimpsed before his untimely demise in his last life and he would never forget that black armor. He didn't know if he was still in the same universe or reality, but if he ever found out where those invaders came from, he would find a way to wipe them out of the universe. The best way forward to achieve this goal was to become a pilot of one of the most deadliest piece of machinery in the known universe.

Arthur began his training once he turned 6 years old. His father called for him to come outside one sunny day and when he got there he learned he'd start his hand to hand combat training.

"Today we are going to start training our fighting techniques" said James. "You will not always have a weapon so we will start with the basics of unarmed combat. What you will learn and master over this next year is called Imperial Karate. Emperor Tiberius introduced this to replace our outdated hand to hand combat training before I went through the academy. It's said to be an ancient fighting style passed down in his family that he shared with the whole empire."

"Imperial Karate? That sounds sketchy and very similar to what I used to know" thought Arthur. He had actually gotten his yellow belt in karate in his past life and wondered if these 2 fighting styles were similar. While he was thinking about this he got a notification from his system.

[New Quest: Learn the fighting style Imperial Karate]

[Quest reward: Random Skill]

"Hmm, a new skill? Finally!" said Arthur, his excitement causing him to jump up and down.

"What do you mean a new skill, and why are you so excited?" asked James, genuinely curious of the strange behavior.

"My system gave me a new quest, a quest to learn Imperial Karate and the reward is a new skill" said Arthur excitedly.

"Son, I've lived my entire life without hearing of anyone getting random skills and quests from their system. We use it to see our stats and and see skills that we've learned throughout our lives and careers. The system gives additional stats based on the system grade, but I've never heard of it granting quests and skills, are you sure you're ok?"

"Maybe it was all in my head" Replied Arthur. He didn't realize that other people didn't have the same thing. He really was blessed in this life and keeping this information to himself was vitally important. He knew he could trust his dad, but he was better safe than sorry in his opinion. He did not want to end up in some lab being tested for the rest of his life after all. He still needed to become a pilot and get his revenge.

Arthur watched a basic demonstration from his father and then quickly took a starting stance.
