Chapter 17 - Discovered

When Geo finished explaining the plans and what everyone has to execute, I spoke to Dad a little, asking him how stuff is at home, how mum is doing and some other things of less importance. After about an hour of us just talking about casual things we said our goodbyes and we left for the base.

I didn't go to the training hall that day as we spent a lot of time at the meeting with Dad. I returned to the base alone that night cause Geo said he was going to see Nate and Cara and I returned to the base alone.

Time flew by quickly and it was the day that Jane was to be transported to the other base. The day that we've been planning and strategizing for since over a month now. After that night that we met Dad, I became more serious-minded about the essence of the whole thing so I trained with a lot more seriousness than I usually do.

Nate and Cara were enthralled by the speed at which I got a grab of all they taught me. I learned the art of lock-picking within two days and by the third day, I had picked the lock of the door to our room and successfully sneaked out of the base. My body is still a huge disadvantage to me when it comes to combat but I am now a little master of martial arts.

I took out time to sneak out to the training hall at night before the start of the actual training since sneaking out of the base is now a piece of cake even with the guards on full watch. I likewise train on my own on days when there's no training so I've improved in leaps and bounds within the space of this month.

If you are to gauge my strength now, I'm far stronger and far more intelligent in combat than an average ten-year-old; you could put me against a seventeen-year-old and I would win out. That's what Goe said by the way. He said this after I got a hit on him in a spar, it was with a wooden blade. I've become confident since that day.

I have also taken time out to train Jane in simple martial art skills and some other things I learnt from Geo, Nate and Cara. So I was more confident by the time they came to take Jane away. I was confident that we will save her. I already promised her that I will.

Geo had come that morning and conveyed a small necklace to Jane that she should wear around her neck. It was the device meant to record and send whatever thing that is said wherever Jane is kept and it shows us the exact location of Jane.

The plan and everything that will be done had been explained to Jane beforehand so she didn't hesitate to put the necklace on. Dad, Geo and I have also met a couple of times after the initial meeting having one or two tété-a-tétés about the grand scheme, new developments and Dad Geo sometimes asked if 'they' have contacted him. I keep asking Dad about mum. She is the only one I could ask about afterall.

In one of the meetings with Dad, Geo had mentioned that the device on Jane's body and the one which I'm going to plant in Davis office will be listened to and followed from a van. He had described the van to but I can't remember the exact facts but I can remember that he said there are cables, Tvs and audio devices that would receive feedback from the various devices.

I said my goodbyes to Jane before she left the room and reassured her that she'll be safe. I was not allowed to leave the room so I didn't know the kind of vehicle or the kinds of people that took her away. Soon after they took Jane away, the door to my room creaked open, and in stepped Geo.

"How are you boy," he asked and I just nodded in response.

"You know it is now your turn, Mase"

"You don't have to tell me," I said because his reminding me brought up the fears that I had pushed to the back of my mind.

"I want you to know something Mase" Geo said "however this mission ends, know that even though it is your fault that Jane is in this situation or perhaps not your fault, you have taken responsibility of it by attempting to save her, so whatever happens, take positive responsibilities even if you are to blame yourself."

I can swear on my Granny's life that I didn't understand a thing out of what Geo said but I nodded as if I understood every fragment of it so he could continue.

"I don't know if you understand all that I'm saying. Notwithstanding, you'll leave for the base this night because we can't waste any more time since she has already been away, then it is most likely that they will start negotiations soon. The auction is in a week and a half or less so we have to move fast.

You'll move this night. The lightfoot movement is more efficient at night because everywhere will be dark so you can effortlessly maneuver your way through places. I brought another dress for you to use in this mission."Geo said as her brought out a black dress from a backpack that he brought.

"Why do I have to wear this" I asked.

"Since you'll be sneaking around the base and you won't like anyone to notice you, the best dress to wear is black. You'll sneak out of the base in this dress by 7 and meet me at the training hall" Geo said and left the room.

I met Geo, Nate and Cara at the training hall wearing the black dress as Geo had instructed me. Surprisingly, the cloth fits me right displaying my little body and making it easier for me to run or jump.

Geo asked me to enter the van parked outside the hall. I met Dad in the van, he was setting some things on some other things. There are lots of things that I have never seen before in the van, some that I know the name of and some I don't, but it was all mostly a combination of one device to another and a cable to another.

I already knew that Dad would follow us to the base, Geo told me he didn't want him to come but he had insisted. I just greeted him and turned to Geo to do my own stuff. I was preoccupied with thoughts of how things may go wrong and how I could probably screw the whole group and our plan of weeks.

Geo gave me words of reassurance along with Dad, Nate and Cara last(I felt refreshed when she spoke to me). I was given another set of shoes to wear, they said it is light and will most likely make less to no sound, I tested it and it was true. They checked some other things before Nate entered the driver's seat and drove off.

On our way to the base, Geo gave me the device that I'll place in Davis' office and another that I'll keep on myself so they can monitor my movements and how things proceed. They taught me how to switch the device on when I place it in his office; I was to place it under his desk. The device is kind of magnetic so I can place it anywhere. Just before the van stopped, Geo opened a map and showed me everywhere around the base like where to pass and where to avoid, and how I'll navigate my way to Davis' office with a minimum of force.

The van finally came to a halt and having made sure that all was in place, they wished me good luck and I was gone. It was the first time in my life that I'm doing such a risky thing and much worse being in charge of another person's fate. If I get caught, then surely all our plans will be screwed up and they might probably kill me.

Though Geo had said to speak to the device on my neck if I get into trouble that they'll get me out but what will happen before they do. The thoughts of all these sent shivers down my spine as I sneak towards the entrance where Goe had illustrated on the map.

"I must not screw this up, I must save Jane, I have to save her" I said to myself as I advanced towards the entrance. Like fifty steps before the I got to the entrance, I heard someone shout something at first but when I took few steps more, I heard it more clearly.

"Stop there!. Who are you?" I froze.

It ended, even before it began.
