Chapter 18 - Payback...

"Are You sure about that?" The thin-tall nurse asked with skepticism written all over her face.

"Yes, I am sure. I saw it with my own eyes. Those darklings dropped the vampire head in the trashcan outside. If you don't believe me, I can prove it to you." The shorter-more younger nurse defended.

"And how are you going to do that?" Another nurse inquired. This nurse was plump and looked far older than the other two, but had a more immature personality.

"That's easy! The last time I saw them, the vampire's head was still in the trashcan. If You guys don't believe me, I can show you."

"Okay! Let's go. Show us." The Plump one proclaimed sarcastically.

The three nurses went outside the clinic to the trashcan not so far away. The nurse that was sure of what her eyes had seen wore a pair of surgical gloves once she reached the trash can. The other two waited a distance behind her.

"What are you guys doing?" She asked.

"Well! you said it was a vampire's head. What if it jumps out and bites your neck or something."

"Yes! Or... Or looks into your eyes and compels you to attack us." The thinner one added.

"Yes! Yes! I have heard of that. I even saw it in a movie once. You look into their red eyes and it's over for you. You instantly become their slave and they make you do all sorts of sensually depraved things like suck on their..."

"..."

The eyes of the other two nurses on the plump one stopped her from continuing.

"*cough* I am going to open it now."

She carefully opened the lid. The first thing her eyes met was the sight of some tissue here and there with blood stains on it. She lifted some of it and showed the other nurses as evidence, which made them take several steps backward.

At this point, beads of sweat had started to form on her forehead. Her fingers were shaky as she moved pieces of trash away. Digging deeper into the trashcan. However, as she dug deeper, the blood stains only increased and so did her heartbeat.

But her determination to prove to her colleagues that she was right was the driving force that pushed her through her fear. Even at this moment, her active mind had already played a million scenarios of that vampire's head she had seen, jumping unto her neck to get a juicy bite out of her.

She swallowed hard a few times as she moved objects aside that for some unknown reason, seemed to remind her of a big blood dripping-paled-faced demon head.

The night was chilly and a bit windy too, but that did not stop her from soaking her nurse attire in visible sweat.

Just then, as she had slowly but surely dug deep enough, her fingers touched something. Something hard and fleshy. Now she was sure of it. This was definitely it. She had finally found it.

She stopped and took a deep breath, then she looked to her colleagues for confirmation. They both gave their approval with a nod. She nodded back in return and then she was at it again. Slowly, she stretched her shaky fingers deep inside to reach for it.

However...

*Woo Woo!!!*

The loud sound of a dog chasing after a cat that passed by her legs made her jump in fright. She screamed as all forms of courage exited her and she fled for her life. The other nurses watching also fled alongside her, with each competing for whom would first enter through the wide doors of the clinic, which for some reason was now too small to accommodate all three of them at the same time.

"Let me in first! I don't want to die. I'm too young." The plump one cried out shamelessly

"Too young!? Who told you vampires care about age. It's even better if it gets you first, that way you get to feed it for a long time, and then it forgets about us. " The thinner one argued as she pushed her way in without care for her image.

Just then, the rather younger nurse with the surgical gloves seemed to have come to the realization that it was just a false alarm. She stopped in her struggle with the other two.

Then she heard a noise. It came from the dustbin. She did not know where the courage came from, but something prompted her to check.

By the trashcan, she saw the Silhouette of a man. He seemed to be rummaging through the trash. Seeing this, she rushed to call her colleagues, however, by the time she could convince them and came back to check, there was no one there aside from a trash can that was now turned upside down.

She immediately ran for the Trash and searched through it-a little more active this time around but she did not find anything, except of cause the usual blood stains here and there.

The other two nurses finally summoned some courage and came forward.

"See!!! I told you she was lying." The thinner one proclaimed with confidence.

"No! It... it was here. I... I know what I am saying. It was right here. I say it here." Then a realization hit her. "Damn it! It must have been him! he took it!"

"Who took it?" The thinner one asked mockingly.

"The man that was searching through the trash!"

"Hmph! First, you lie to us and now you blame a homeless man. I have really had it with you." She turned and walked back to the clinic in anger.

The plump one followed her too, more in fear of being left outside than in disbelief of her colleague's story.

"Wait! am serious. It was right here..." She tried to argue her case as she followed them into the clinic.

Meanwhile, a man had just made his way through a balcony. Because of the fight that happened earlier that night, the entire balcony was a mess. The flower pots were destroyed and the Parts of the balcony had been broken.

He made his way into the house and into a room. There, an old woman sat by the bedside of a dog wrapped properly in bandages. Her eyes were teary as she gently stroked the head of the dog which was fast asleep.

The moment she saw him, she was alarmed but upon recognizing his face, she loosed her guard.

"It's you! You came back. What for?"

"I came to see how he is doing. Also, I brought a little present." He dropped a bag at her foot. "Please make sure he enjoys playing with it before you decide to throw it away." As soon as he said that, he turned to walk away.

"Wait! Darkling. Erm... Adria!" She called out to him, "What's in the bag?"

His voice reached her ears as he left through the balcony, "For you, it's an apology. For him, It's payback..."
