"Alright Everyone I want you to get into your formation single file lines and keep a three feet distance from each other. Raise your right hand and repeat after me" Sergeant Ross said.
I stepped forward into my usual second-row third-column position with my two best friends. Jack in front of me and Leo behind me. Finally, today was the end of the 6 months of hell I thought to myself. How did my brother even get through this considering the fact that now he's a navy seal, I could never.
"Daryl stand straight don't make me come down there and make you run five laps" Sergeant Ross shouted at me.
I straightened my shoulders man that guy never cuts us any slack always scolding us even on the last day.
"Raise your right hand everyone and take the pledge" Sergeant Ross announced.
Ah, I forgot to introduce myself and the others I think ill do that later don't want the Sergeant catching me lacking.
I raised my right hand and took the pledge.
"I, Daryl Alexander, do solemnly affirm that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which I am about to enter, for Half moon bay and County of San Francisco, according to the best of my ability."
Oh, I forgot to mention I live in Half Moon Bay for those who don't know where it is it's towards the southwest of San Francisco. It's around a forty-minute drive from there.
"Alright congratulations everyone you are officially police officers you have the utmost respect from me and your fellow seniors for making it this far. We entrust the future in your hands and expect you to do your utmost. Don't screw up Sergeant" Ross said as he looked towards my group knowing we were the most mischievous.
"We have a formal dinner for you all at 8 pm sharp at the Hibernia event hall in San Francisco Hope to see you all there. Be sure to collect your uniform and firearms before leaving you'll find Steve handing them out, you all are dismissed"Sergeant Ross said as we walked off the stage.
I walked towards the table where Steve was giving out the uniforms congratulating everyone with his sweet smile. Steve is a lovable and slightly overweight individual and is the epitome of friendliness at the front desk of the police station. With a warm smile and a heart brimming with kindness, he warmly welcomes visitors, offering exceptional customer service. Steve radiates charm and genuine care for others. He takes immense delight in his love for donuts, often sharing his favorite treats with colleagues and savoring them during well-deserved breaks. He'd always save strawberry donuts for me I was never a fan of non-cream donuts but Id gladly accepted his gift.
Congratulations Leo, Daryl, and Jack are so proud to see you guys grow up so fast I can't wait to see what you three will achieve he said with tears of happiness in his eyes.
"Heck yeah we're gonna be awesome" Jack yelled with everyone staring at him.
"Hey Steve tomorrow donuts are on me," I said winking.
He handed me my Uniform, badge, bulletproof armor, handcuffs, walkie-talkie, flashlight belt, pepper spray, and most importantly a classic Sig Sauer P226.
Sheesh, am I missing anything else I thought to myself? I greeted my friends goodbye and walked towards my truck. That's right a truck, my parents were farmers so we didn't have a car. My truck was a smooth green color we'd keep crates of fruits and vegetables in the back to transport them to buyers.
I turned on the rusty machine and started driving home. My family farm was at the edge of the town. It was mostly a pumpkin farm we would grow other crops as well but the pumpkins attracted visitors we had also built a corn maze as well.
A new virus is currently breaking out in Washington we still are not fully aware of its sym- the radio said as I changed the channel to my favorite music. Civilian by wye oak was playing a classic song I enjoyed. I drove into the farm and parked the truck. We had the stables at the entrance with a few horses in them mine was Becky a beautiful white elegant horse. To the right was my house I walked in with my mom greeting me and my father congratulating me.
Thanks, I said a bit embarrassed as I ran upstairs into my room. I closed the door and walked towards my bed. Let me describe my room its nothing much as you entered my cupboard would be at the right filled with clothes and items. Ahead it would be more open with my bed in front with a window pointing towards san francisco sometimes you could see the lights from there. To the right was my study table which was empty since I didn't have a laptop or computer. I put my clothes over there and jumped into my bed to take a short nap.
I snoozed off forgetting to put on an alarm. I was awoken by my German shepherd dog Rover licking my face. The sun was setting "Shit" I said in a panic grabbing my phone. The time was 7:10 I was going to be late the drive was a forty-minute drive. I quickly got up rushing towards the cupboard. I was already wearing black jeans I grabbed a white collar shirt and a black coat as I ran downstairs. I didn't even get time to brush my hair I was looking like a total mess. I quickly got into the truck and drove out of the farm in a rush knocking down a few crops.
After an intense forty-minute drive with angry drivers honking at me for my reckless driving, I finally made it with two minutes to spare. I moved the rearview mirror towards me as I moved my hair towards the side. I would say I wasn't the best-looking guy I have tousled brown hair and piercing brown eyes. I have muscles but I wouldn't say I'm well built just have enough muscles to take out people but put me against a guy who knows how to fight or is way bigger than me id pretty much lose. Of course, since I wanted to be the best officer I have decided to take work out more after today maybe take a few boxing classes as well. My brother had taught me how to fight since he had taken multiple martial art classes as well as boxing before going into the army.
I walked into the hall and walked towards the table where my friends were.
* Drinks clatter*
"CHEERS!" everyone yells while sipping on their wine and cocktails.
"Finally! It's about God damn time" Jack yelled with excitement his milky white teeth glowing and his dark brown hair falling on his forehead, today he was rather looking stunning with his red suit and red tie. He truly was a ladies' man.
"Ye man 4 years of training and today we finally did it boys, we're officially cops" I said while sipping on my wine. Leo was laying back on his chair. He wore a white tuxedo and a ridiculous white hat with the words sheriff embedded on it. His last cigarette in his last hand was almost about to be extinguished. I guess Jack made him put on that ridiculous outfit as knowing Leo he wouldn't really wear that he was never the fashion type. He was that one guy sitting at the corner quietly but once you got to know him he was a blast.
"Man but 6 months wasted for this were not even captains yet" Ugh! I exclaimed "What a drag", while rubbing my chin filled with a bit of hair. I had forgotten to shave and my friends could tell I was a mess.
" Is there a problem with that MR Daryl " the sergeant stated, startling me while giving me the death stare. His hands in his waistcoat, rumor had it the reason why he always kept his hands in his pocket was because he always had a loaded gun ready for anything. His eye scars covered his face making him intimidating. A rumor spread that a criminal had slashed him their during his first day. He would me that one guy you would want to avoid.
"NO, NO nothing at all sergeant" I stated, my heart beating I could barely breathe as I felt those cold dark eyes staring at me. I looked at my friends hoping they would save me, unfortunately for me they could barely control themselves from laughing. Well good riddance to me I guess today is the day I die.
"Today is your lucky day Alexander ill cut you some slack for now but starting tomorrow one little complaint out of you and it's 500 pushups for you, do you understand?"
"Yes sergeant," I said while taking a breath of happiness. Once the sergeant left my friends immediately started to burst out laughing.
"Man I hate you guys," I said with my face full of disappointment for them wondering how the hell they got here in the first place.
"Hey cheer up pal, at least you are one step closer to getting close to your brother again" Jack exclaimed while patting my back. (His words did not comfort me at all)
I looked at my watch and it was 11 pm it was getting late.
"Well I should be heading home it's getting pretty late plus we have our first duty tomorrow," Leo said while getting his coat and taking his last sip of wine. He threw his cigarette away while waving to us with a calm expression.
"I'll see you losers tomorrow" Leo uttered while heading out with his coat dangling in his arms and his blond hair falling backward.
"Well, I guess we should be heading out as well, need a ride, Jack?" I asked while fidgeting with my truck's keys in my pocket. He did not respond and just headed toward my truck he surely was upset about something. He never showed this side of him to Leo at all as he did not want him to worry.
The ride back was silent before I knew it we were already at his house, "Well I guess ill see you tomorrow".
Jack left while giving me a tootsie roll which was his way of saying Goodbye. I honestly had no idea where he even got them from. "Hey Jack at least tell me what's wrong, "I said.
"Haven't been able to reach my grandma or cousins in DC since morning something serious is going down there," he said with a worried face.
"Don't stress about it man I am sure you'll get a call tomorrow right now you just rest and think about your first duty tomorrow" I said with a comforting smile.
He chuckled as he waved goodbye.
Finally, it was time to get back to my nice comfy bed. I reversed the car heading towards the family farm. It was pretty dark outside and the street lamps weren't lighted well. I noticed a strange man on the sidewalk while driving home, it looked as if his skin was green. He was walking very slowly and i couldn't see him well. I thought to myself maybe he was green from the festival's face painting Mom and Dad had gone to or worse maybe it was Dad's spinach I snickered.
I drove into the farm closed the gates and drove towards the shed where I parked the car.
"Nhiii" Becky the horse went as she was startled by the noise. I walked towards the shed.
"Hey girl" I said while patting her. I headed into the house straight into my room. I put on my pajamas and dove straight into bed turning on the air conditioner and pulling the blanket over me so I would not catch a flue. I immediately passed out after thinking about my brother, he was a great man. He was the first person from this town who was in the air force and navy seal. serving in the Navy for 5 years and the Air Force for 3 years. My dog Rover had also entered my room which was normal and made some space for himself on my bed to join me in my sleep. only later I was to be awoken by the sounds of gunshots and screaming.
