Chapter 9 - Taking a C-rank quest

After Sarah was healed, Medjid examined her hands again and then turned toward Drake with an expectant look. "Show me your wound as well," Medjid ordered before kindly continuing. "I can heal you with ease if you're injured."

Drake shook his head. "I have a skill that helps me heal myself quickly." He pointed to his stomach wound, where his wound had already healed itself. "There won't be any problems here." He assured Medjid.

"Interesting..." Medjid narrowed his eyes in suspicion. There were only two ways Drake could heal faster than normal people: he used magic, or he was a demon. "Very well." Medjid agreed. "Let's continue to the reception room."

He suggested and stood up. "We might as well as finish your registration today."

"Alright." Drake nodded and followed Medjid through the hallways until they finally entered a small room filled with tables and chairs. A large wooden desk stood in the center of the room with a tall elf wearing sunglasses sitting behind it.

"Hey, Greg. I would like to register this boy." Medjid said as he handed the paperwork over to the man.

The man shifted his gaze between Drake and Medjid and narrowed his eyes. "Only him?" he asked curiously. "Where's everyone else?"

"W-well..." Medjid glanced toward Drake. "There was an incident... And he is the only one who stayed."

The man's eyes opened wide. "What incident?!"

And so Medjid explained to Greg the whole situation between the examiner and Drake. After finishing, Greg turned to stare at Drake intensely, his expression unreadable. "Well..." he started, "This boy seems quite a character." He said with an amused expression as he reached out to grasp his chin. "You know... You must be strong if you managed to make Gradgir use cheap tricks."

"You think so?" Drake gasped in disbelief. "I thought that examiner was a joke."

"He isn't a joke." Gregory chuckled. "But even though he is a strong knight, he is also very arrogant. He overthinks himself. It's good that you taught him a lesson."

"I see..." Drake responded with a thoughtful expression.

Medjid cleared his throat loudly. He then took the papers off Greg's table and gestured for Drake to come forward. "We're done here; sign this." He said, handing Drake the paper.

Drake took the paper from Medjid's hands and began to scan it. Everything looked good, and so he signed.

"Great! You're now an adventurer." Medjid said enthusiastically.

"Congratulations!" Greg applauded Drake. "You two are free to go now; I will bring you your adventurer's card in about an hour," he said to Drake and Medjid while leaving his post.

Drake and Medjid left the room and began walking back to the stairs, which led them up to the main floor where the adventurers resided. The two walked silently for a few moments before Medjid spoke, "Can I ask you something?"

"Ask away," Drake replied, bored.

Medjid hesitated for a moment before replying, "Would you take a higher tier quest for me?" he asked hesitantly.

"How much will I get paid?"

"And the quest will be quite fast if you manage to act quickly." Medjid was thinking about his words carefully, so he didn't even hear Drake's question. "Two to three days, and you'll be done. But..."

"Alright, but how much will you pay me?!" Drake got slightly annoyed.

"Four gold coins. But the quest in question is quite dangerous." Medjid warned him seriously. "However, since I have a slight understanding of your skills, I feel you would be perfect for it."

"F-four..." Drake swallowed nervously. He hadn't expected to earn money so fast and felt like a little kid who was eager for a treat again. "Sure!" Drake eagerly replied while nodding.

"Good." He sighed deeply. "We have a bandit problem in the north, which we need to investigate. Do you think you'll be able to handle that?"

"Of course. I have no problems with that." He said proudly. "What rank quest is this?"

"It is ranked C. However, seeing how you easily defeated Gadgir, I assume you have enough experience and will infiltrate them with ease."

Suddenly Drake's mood dropped. "Infiltrating?" he asked with uncertainty. "Can't I just kill them?"

Medjid shook his head. "Your safety is your priority. So don't do anything reckless."

"B-but..." Drake tried to protest.

Medjid stopped in the middle of his walk and stared down at Drake. His eyes gave Drake the message not to argue.

"Fine, I promise I'll try not to do anything stupid." He huffed in irritation. "Just give me all information on them you have so far."

Medjid nodded at him. "Alright then. Let's head to my office."

*******

He told him everything he knew about the bandits in the office, their location, and even what they were wearing. Once Drake finished reading what he had to read, he heaved a heavy sigh. "So they have between five men and thirty... One of them is the mage."

"Yes. They are also ruthless as they don't leave any witnesses alive." Medjid frowned while thinking of gruesome things those bandits do to people, "They don't even give mercy to kids or women."

"Wow, sounds terrible," Drake said. However, his mind was already planning to find those bandits as Drake had more than enough information on those bandits. So he ignored what Medjid was speaking now.

"If you find their traces, you should try to avoid confrontation, gather information, and run. Sarah said you can move faster than the eye can detect and self-heal quickly." Medjid instructed Drake, who was no longer even listening. "Your ability is the main reason I want you to do this."

"Quick question..." Suddenly Drake's eyes lit up. "Theoretically, if I managed to kill them all... Will I get paid more?"

"Well, the bounty is 20 gold because they are lurking in the trading route," Medjid informed Drake.

"20 gold?! That's crazy!" Drake couldn't believe what he'd just heard. He could live inside an inn for twenty years with that much gold. Even buying a house would not be out of the question! "I'll do it!" then he realized he said he would avoid the confrontation. "Uh. I will do it if I will have no other choice. In case I will need to defend myself."

Medjid looked at Drake, whose facial expression revealed his true intentions. "Oh boy... I hope I won't regret this," he muttered silently, yet loud enough for Drake to hear.

"Oh, no need to be so worried. I will be careful!" Drake cheerfully patted Medjid on the back with an encouraging smile before hurrying outside. Before leaving, he called back to Medjid. "See you later, Medjid!"

"You can't go yet, Drake," Medjid called after him. He sighed and leaned against the wall before resting his hand behind his head, feeling tired. "You still need to wait for your adventurer's ID card."
