I woke up but I had no idea where I was, there was a lot of lights and everything was just.....ah! I tried to reach for my foot. Still hurts. I think I'm at the hospital but I don't understand, what kind of shell was that? My foot hurts like crazy.
The doctor came in with Abuela and I sighed in relief. The doctor was in his early 40s,average built, tall with black hair and brown eyes. He smiled at me. "Hello, Avery how do you feel?" "I'm okay but my foot." I replied.
"Yes, your foot will still sting a little but only for a while. It was good that you got to the hospital while you did or else we would've lost you. You stepped on a cone snail shell. They are very poisonous and can cause instant death if not treated immediately." The doctor said.
"We had to give you a tetanus shot just in case your wound was contaminated. And you will be discharged tomorrow afternoon and you can come on Saturday so we can remove your bandages." He said.
"Um, doctor will I be able to like walk long distances?" I asked. "Oh! Sure but after your bandages are taken out." He replied and I nodded.
I struggled to sit up while the doctor left the room. "Careful, mija. You're still not well." Abuela said, "I'm fine abuela. I'm not amputated or anything." I groaned.
"Where's Peter?" I asked. "He said he'll back later." She replied and I nodded. Just then the door flew open and Bethel came in, "Oh my gosh! Avery, what happened? Peter told me everything? Are you okay?"
I chuckled, "Would you calm down." "Sound more sick than I am." "I am not kidding. Are you alright?" she asked concerned. "I'm fine Beth." I said.
"So you talked to Peter?" I asked, "Yeah, he must've been worried poor thing. He had front row seats, ugh I would've fainted right after you my goodness." Bethel was being really dramatic right now.
"He just told me what happened and..." Abuela cut her off, "Dears, I'm gonna go get something to drink okay." She said and we nodded. She left. "He just left. I thought he would come with me but no." She sighed.
"There's a lot going on with him. With the break ups and the arguments with his parents about Icon." She said, "Wait, what?" I asked. "Oh, I was gonna tell you about that, it's that Peter came to apologize for his reaction and I had to too. Then he received a phone call and it wasn't pretty."
"When did this happen?"I asked her, "Today. He showed up at my house in the morning. He wanted to talk about what happened at Surf's Pizza. So we did and then." She said.
"I had to ask him and so he told me that he was going to Icon on a basketball scholarship and his parents don't approve. They want to send him away to Europe to live with his aunt and take care of one of their companies." She told me.
I was literally blown away and my mind was just stuck. This is too much to take in at the moment. Europe. "He told me that you already know about Icon. That was it, he had to go later to meet up with you guys at the beach." She said.
"What about the break up?" I asked, "Oh! That?" "Well, I'm not really sure because it was a long time I mean it was after the incident at Surf's Pizza. I hadn't seen Peter for a while and then the night before graduation I was supposed to meet Mick at Ronnie's but then he was running late." She said.
"So I was waiting for him then Peter walked in then he sat down and I guessed he was waiting for someone but he didn't see me. Later on Mick showed up and then this girl too." She told me.
"It must've been his girlfriend. You know, the one we've never met and thought she wasn't real. Well, she's real. Really pretty too. Well they talked for a while and then later she left and the look on Peter's face...." She paused. "What!" I said, "Well, it looked like they broke up but I don't know. It could be just an argument." She said.
I sighed and slid under the covers then I put my hand on my forehead. "I know." She said and I shook my head. "He's not gonna come here today." I said, "Why not?" she asked. "Just take my word for it." I told her and shut my eyes.
Later on that night I lay awake staring at the ceiling while Abuela and Beth slept soundly on the couch just beside my bed. Of course, why would you come here. I only remind you of the heart you broke only for me to come and break yours.
Why didn't you tell me all this Peter. Maybe the situation would've been different for us. Then again I'm pretty messed up so I'm still not sure if it would make a difference.
There I was thinking you some kind of a jerk tryna kiss me while you were with someone else but I was wrong and I'm sorry. You're a great guy. I shouldn't have believed otherwise so quickly. Too bad I can't tell you all this now.
The morning came and I thanked God because I was tired of laying awake doing nothing. I couldn't sleep last night. I took a deep breath and stared at Abuela and Beth asleep, so peaceful isn't it. When you're sleep nothing in the world matters.
Abuela was making a muffled noise then Beth was startled awake. She slid down the floor and I chuckled. She looked up at me and stood up then she smiled. "Morning!" She said.
"Morning!" I smiled. "Shh!" She tiptoed across the room and opened the door, "Breakfast." She whispered and I nodded and she left. I chuckled at her childish behaviour then I watched Abuela sleep.
I went out to get breakfast, I was still sleepy so I kind of staggered. I walked outside the hospital and went to the nearest coffee shop I could find. I went inside and placed my order at the counter. "I'll take two blueberry muffins, two chicken sandwiches, a bagel, one latte, black coffee and espresso." I sighed as I took a seat near the counter. I looked around at all the customers coming in. Morning rush. I thought and smiled.
A guy came rushing in and he dropped his stuff but I'm not sure he noticed because he was carrying a lot of binders and some papers were stickin' out, it was a hot mess.
He went up to the counter and I picked up some of the papers that got loose and I approached him and tapped on his shoulder. He turned to look at me. He was about my height, I'm 5'5". Dirty blonde messy hair and blue eyes.
I handed him the papers that he dropped. "Oh! I'm sorry to put you through this. Thanks a lot." He smiled. "Don't worry about it. Looked like you wouldn't have noticed." I said looking at the disorganized binder.
"Oh, I'm late so I just picked the whole thing up without putting it together." He said. He was sweating a lot. "Um, maybe you wanna take a seat there pal." I told him.
He sat down and his breathing slowed down. "Did you order?" I asked, "Yeah." He replied. I sat down too then I took out a handkerchief from my pocket and gave it to him. "Here." He stared at me, "For your." I said and he took it and dabbed some of the sweat. "My boss is really strict and he hates tardiness." "What no way?" I said, "I know right. Work can get stressful with him." He said, "No, I meant that you still use the word tardy." I said and he chuckled revealing a gap between his teeth.
It's small but it's noticeable. "You're funny." "Just trying to get the day by. Done." I said handing him his now organized binder. He looked surprised. "Um. Thanks but how did you?"
"Oh, I took Spanish in high school so since you're working as a translator right?" I asked, and he nodded. "So I just kinda figured it out. It's easy once you understand what it means." I told him.
He kept staring at me in confusion and at the same time he looked impressed. "Matthew and Bethel." The girl from the counter called and I went and picked up both our orders then I placed them on the table.
"Order up!" I smiled, "Thanks." He said. "It's fine. Anyone could've done it." I said. "Not really. Even I couldn't but really thank you so much for everything." He smiled. "You're welcome Matthew." I smiled.
He seemed to be shocked at how I knew his name but then he saw the coffee cup and he chuckled. He stood up and went to pay for his coffee and that's when I remembered, my purse. It's at the hospital.
I felt like passing out. What am I gonna do? Oh God! Please. Maybe they'll let me go back for it. I approached the counter and cleared my throat. "Um, excuse miss. Uh, I seemed to have left my bag at the hospital so would you mind if I run real quick to get it." I said.
Before the counter attendant could say anything Matthew cut her off, "I'll pay for her order. I f you don't mind." I nodded in response. "How much is it miss?" He asked the attendant. I went back to sit.
I gathered all our food and I was heading outside. "Thanks." I told Matthew, "It's the least I can do for you Bethel." He said. "The cup." I smiled. "Touché." He laughed.
"See you around." I said and he nodded in return, "Yeah, see you around." I left the shop and went back to the hospital.
I smiled as Bethel came back with breakfast. My stomach was waging war. "Look what I got." She said excited. "Oh...kay. Bagel, muffin and espresso for Abuela, muffin, sandwich and latte for Avery and a sandwich and black coffee for yours truly." She smiled.
"Gracias, mija." Abuela said. "You're welcome, Abuela." She smiled and we all began eating. "Hey, how come you only get a sandwich Beth." I said. "It's okay Ave. I knew cry about it if I only bought myself a sandwich." She said.
"True but you would've bought some more for yourself though." I said sipping on the latte. "I left my purse here and besides it didn't have enough cash for three sandwiches." She said.
"Wait, so how did you pay for all this?" I asked concerned, "Don't worry about it. I'll tell you about my Samaritan moment later." She smiled. "Samaritan. Samaritan! Samaritan? What Samaritan?" I asked.
"Mija, you're goin' to choke. Eat, no more chit chat." Abuela said. I frowned and took a bite at my muffin and closed my eyes as a response to the sweet taste.
