Next day morning, Mom received a phone call and someone rang the doorbell. Mom looked at my brother, who nodded and quickly ran to his room. I didn't understand what was going on.
SAM: Mom, what's going on?
Mom looked at me with a serious face, and I immediately shut up and looked down. I had never seen Mom this angry before, and it made me nervous. My sister patted my shoulder, and when I looked into her eyes, I saw the same expression as Mom's. I looked down again, feeling fearful. Then my brother came and I tried to turn away, but Mom stepped in front of me and placed both her hands on my shoulders, one on each side. I looked up at her, and then quickly looked down again after seeing her expression.
MOM: Look at me, Sam.
I looked at Mom's face with a fearful expression.
MOM: Don't worry, Sam. Your mom is here. I can't explain everything right now, but Mom always wants what's best for you, right? You'll listen to Mom, won't you?
I nodded in response.
Mom looked at my brother, nodded, and gave me the bag he was holding in his right hand. I took the bag, and Mom held my hand, leading me to the front door. She opened the door, revealing three women in black suits standing outside. Mom looked at me and said,
MOM: Go with them for now. I'll come to you when I solve this problem.
Mom bent down, gave me a kiss on the forehead, and then turned to the women, saying,
MOM: Use this car.
She threw the car key to the woman in the middle. The woman nodded and took my hand, leading me to the elevator. After a short ride, we reached the ground floor and exited the building, heading towards the parking lot. The woman pressed the car key, and we heard the sound of my mother's car unlocking. Once we identified which car was my mother's, we got in, with the woman sitting in the front driver's seat, me in the back, and the other two women on my right and left. It took us about 10 minutes to reach the airport, which surprised me. I hadn't expected to go to the airport; I thought they might send me to another city or something. Returning to the present, when I opened my eyes, I realized I was at the airport. Standing in front of us was a sleek and large cabin jet, not a small one. The car stopped, and we got out and boarded the plane. I wondered what had happened to my mother's car, but two suited men took it away from the airport. After five minutes, we took off. The flight lasted for hours, and my back started to ache. I couldn't understand how the three women were able to keep moving without any signs of discomfort. Upon landing, we found ourselves in front of an SUV parked on the tarmac. A man handed the car key to the woman in the middle, and he boarded the plane. We also got into the car and left. As we drove away, I saw our plane in the sky, looking beautiful. After leaving the city area, we arrived in a semi-urban area, not quite a city, nor a small town. It took a few more minutes to reach our destination. We parked the car in front of a charming and cozy house. As we entered the house, I felt like a king because the woman was leading the way, with the other two flanking me on my right and left. We entered the living room, where there was a table in front of two sofas. On top of the table, there was a mobile phone
, two white and black remotes, and a file. The woman picked up the mobile phone from the table, typed something, and showed me the screen. There was a number saved, and she said,
MIDDLE LADY: If you ever need anything like books, food, toys, money, etc., you can call this number. And if you catch a fever or need medical help, you can call this number 24/7.
I thought to myself that someone who is available 24/7 must not need to sleep. Then the woman handed me the bag containing the documents and said,
MIDDLE LADY: If you want to study or get admission to a school, here are your fake documents. Just call this number for any assistance.
She showed me the number again. Then she said,
MIDDLE LADY: Your food is ready. I would have served it myself, but your mom said you need to learn things. So, sorry. Goodbye, Mr. Sam.
And with that, everyone left. I locked the front door and explored the new house. On the first floor, there were three rooms: a study room, a bedroom, and a guest room. On the ground floor, there was a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, a storeroom, and I also discovered a basement. The basement was quite large, and I noticed a door that led to an indoor underground gym, though I didn't need it at the moment. I went to the kitchen to eat something, and at the same time, the phone started ringing. I rushed to the living room, picked up the call, and unsurprisingly, it was Mom.
SAM: Hello?
MOM: Have you eaten something for lunch?
SAM: No, I just arrived 10 minutes ago.
MOM: Take a bath before eating, and just rest for today. No books, okay?
SAM: Okay.
SAM: ... Mom, can you explain?
MOM: Silence.
SAM: Silence.
The silence was awkward. Then Mom spoke up.
MOM: You know your father works for the government, right?
SAM: Yes.
MOM: Well, your father not only works for the government but also for the Ministry of Defense, holding a high rank. And before you came into our lives, I was assigned to protect your father. After his wife's death, I started taking care of your brother and sister. When your father proposed to me, I happily accepted because I was already attached to your brother and sister. Now, after I started training your brother and sister, and when you came into our lives, I left my job to take care of both of you. But recently, a problem arose. Someone leaked personal information about your father, such as his address and family members. You're still young, so you might not fully understand, but I'm doing all of this to protect you. Mom loves her Sam, okay?
SAM: If they can't go after father, they'll come after me to threaten him. And since Father works for the Ministry of Defense, even if he wants to, he can't go against the nation. So, in the end, I'm the one who could lose his life. That's why you guys sent me away, right, Mom?
After hearing this, Mom paused for a moment.
MOM: (I always tried to make our family seem so normal and loving for him. I know he's smart, but this level of maturity... wow, my son, wow.)
MOM: It looks like you understand the situation we're in. I'll call you back when I can bring you back. And one more thing, you're not in another city. You're in a small country called Korea
.
SAM: WHAT? Sorry, okay. Bye, Mom.
The call ended, leaving me with a mix of emotions and a lot to process.
