Chapter 30 - Home is where the heart is

The taxi driver rode of after I had paid him. I stood in front of a giant house. This was the orphanage that Damien had grown up in. This was the place were his dark secrets were. This was were his villain origin story started.

I knocked on the door and waited for a while. I heard someone running up to the door. By the sound of it, it was several children. I could hear their voices as well as they talked over each other to a woman who was trying to open the door.

The door opened and Sally stood there with several children around her. The children cheered as they saw me and I did not know what to do. I did not think that Damien would be so popular with the kids.

Sally and I stared at each other for a while. I opened my mouth to speak but Sally hushed me and hugged me.

"I'm glad that your okay." she said as she sobbed on my shoulder. Earlier I had said that she was like an older sister to Damien but now it felt like she was no different from his mother. She had been worried for me. She cared for Damien and loved him as if he were her own child despite not having any children.

"Come on in." she said.

I stepped into the house. It was no different from a house with lots of children. It was lively. There was shouting and screaming from the children. I could smell the aroma from the food that was being cooked.

"Where is my room?" I asked. I knew Damien had his own room as he was growing older. There were 9 rooms in total and 16 children in total. The only people who had there own rooms were the three mothers and Damien. You might be thinking that it was favoritism at work but it wasn't. Damien was not a social person. He was a loner who enjoyed his own company. This was why he had got his own room. He previously used to share a room with other kids but he was unable to get along with him. This was the case of the child he had buried 45 metres deep.

I followed a small child who showed me to my room. I did not know why everyone was ecstatic to see me. I knew Damien did not get along with anyone at all. So why were they so happy to see me? Could they sense that I was a different person and not Damien? Nah, that was too absurd.

My room was no different from how I had found my dorm room. It was dirty, dark and slightly smelly. There were papers and notebooks on the floor. There were papers upon papers upon papers on the wall. Just from a single glance I could see that they were all pages from potion textbooks.

Yeesh! This man was a psycho.

I had to clean all of this up. I yawned as I was feeling tired. I shrugged my shoulders and fell down asleep.

I'll just clean it up after I woke up.

It was time for dinner. I sat at a giant table with everyone else. Two of the orphanage mothers sat at both ends of the table while Sally sat in the middle holding a child.

"Before we eat let's say a prayer." The mother named Mary said. "Who would like to say the prayer?" she asked. The children all excitedly raised their hands and shouted each trying to get picked.

"I'll say the prayer." I said. The atmosphere of the table immediately came to a stop with all eyes on me.

"But big bwother Damien, you never said a pwayer befowe." a small child said.

"Shut up, you little dumb child." Was what I wanted to say.

Instead I asked "Am I not allowed to?"

"No, Damien by all means go ahead, we're just surprised is all. We never seen you say a prayer before." Mother Rachael said. Mother Rachael was a plump woman who had sweat all over her body. That must have been from being in the kitchen all day cooking. She had a hoarse voice as if she had a cold and a blocked nose.

"Very well then." I felt two small hands clasp on each of my palms. The small boy and girl who sat next to me were holding my hand. I disliked kids especially the ones with dirty hands.

I closed my eyes and said the prayer. "Dear Gracious Lord, Day after Day you bless us and provide for us. You feed us, clothe us and look after us. You have given us more than we could ever hope for. We are thankful and pray that you keep blessing us and protecting us. Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

"Amen!"

The prayer was simple and short. I had said this prayer several times back on earth much to my mother's disappointment. She would always force me to say more but I was unable to think of anything. I was not a Christian despite being raised in a Christian household. Although I was not Christian that did not mean that I did not believe in God. I believed in God. I just wasn't a Christian.

The food Mother Rachael had made was simple and delicious. Pasta with meatballs. The food was just amazing. The spices were carefully picked to create such a mouth orgy in my mouth. The flavours were melting on my tongue.

I took my time eating the meal and enjoying it. This was a nice peaceful atmosphere. It was such a shame that I had made Damien kill them. At least I knew I wasn't going to kill them. Why would I?

I had just found free lodging and free food.

I had returned to my room and was sitting on my bed when I heard a knock on my door. It was 11 o'clock. All the children had been put to sleep.

"Come in." I said. Mother Rachael, Mother Mary and Mother Sally walked into my room. It was time I had this chat with them, after all they were still my legal guardians in this world.
