3 days later
"Woah I understand this mission is important but that almost sounds like suicide, how were you ever going to do this by yourself." Mahō said.
"Well I'm the only person who was willing to come do this mission, well at least the only one with enough power to actually be able to complete it. If you don't wanna do it, just go running back to whichever noble family you came from and tell them so they can stop me." Gray replied with a hint of sarcasm.
"You know I'm not from a royal family and that I'm not running away, I just wish you had a better idea than to walk right in and try and brute force it, that's all." Mahō said calmly.
2 days later
Mahō wakes up and feels slightly nervous still about raiding the Duke's mansion just didn't sit right, even though he was only a duke he was still bound to be strong and have a bunch of guards that sounded like a pain to deal with. After starting breakfast, Gray walked into the room like he hadn't been gone when Mahō had woken up.
"You ready for the big night tonight. It should be exhilarating." Gray said with a grin
"As ready as I can be I guess, you still haven't told me what magic you specialize in for me to get a better feeling for your fighting style, these last few days of sparring haven't been enough." Mahō replied with a sigh.
"Well we plan on entering on different sides so it should matter much if we can fight good together or not, greenie, just do your part of the job and we'll be good." Gray said before sitting down to eat.
"Fine, have it your way, I'll finish my task before you do anyway." Mahō mumbles in response.
I really hate when he calls me greenie, but I guess it means he's starting to trust me a little more and is starting to consider me part of the revolution. Hopefully after this mission we can go back to wherever he's from and make me official, so I can try and help make a difference. I won't back down to anything, not after all gramps sacrificed to get me here, all the training and all the struggle, I'll make it count.
Later that night
21:47
Gray is ready on his side of the mansion, just waiting for the time to hit 22:00 so they can both start at the same time. Glancing at his watch, his nervousness starts to show way more than he expected it to.
"I just want to win." Gray whispered under his breath. I just want to complete this mission and go home. I wonder what the higher ups will think about Mahō.
21:57
"Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, I need to get this done quick and smooth, and then we can get out of here and have made a difference for this city." Mahō mumbles to himself in a tree right outside the duke's mansion. The revolution will hopefully accept me for helping Gray with this mission. I need to make a difference and this is just the start.
22:00
Gray does a short distance blink onto a window seal on the third floor and opens the window silently and climbs in. Unsheathing a dark steel dagger, Gray silently runs through the hall, slashing the throats of all the sleeping guards. "How are they all asleep, so fucking lazy and worthless thinking everything is okay." Gray whispers to himself after killing his whole hall of guards stationed at every door, all asleep.
22:07
Gray walks around the last corner before getting to the dukes room and stops, seeing someone at the end of the hall
22:00
Mahō drops in through a skylight down onto the third floor of the mansion and uses shadow magic to blend in with the darkness in the hallway. "What, they're all asleep." Mahō said a little too loud. A guard next to him started to stir awake, but within an instant everyone in the hallway was dead, being suffocated to death by the shadows Mahō was a part of.
22:05
Mahō makes it to the hallway that has the door to the duke's room and waits for Gray.
22:07
Gray launches his dagger at Mahō from the other side of the hallway, and Mahō catches it before it hits the wall. "Thankfully I didn't throw that at full strength because I thought it was just a guard" Gray thinks. Mahō throws his hands into the air and then starts making his way to the door, where they meet and look and nod at each other before opening it.
As the door is opening it creaks loudly, startling the duke awake and as he jumps out of bed, Mahō blends into the shadows before the duke is able to see him. Gray proceeds to throw his dagger full strength at the duke and the duke catches it and grumbles "Who are you boy." Gray dashes into the hallway in a panic. "How did he catch the dagger so easily? I thought I was on the same level as a duke. How is he so strong?" Gray says in his mind, panicking. Where'd Mahō go, I have to save him, he wasn't even supposed to be a part of this, why did I drag him into this? Gray continues to panic while Mahō starts his end of the fight. Mahō Shooting 3 spears of darkness from the shadow on the wall, the duke dodges 2 but gets grazed by the third. Before Mahō could even realize the duke's eyes started glowing with a green tint and then looked Mahō in the eyes. Fear starts to wash over him as he realizes that there is no hiding in this room with a man clearly stronger than him. He thought he was the strongest, but he was clearly wrong. Everyone up until now was just weak. 4 vases break around the room and water shoots at Mahō faster than he had ever seen magic move before, and he couldn't hide, bringing up a wall of ice to try and block it Mahō knew it wouldn't work the wall was summoned and the water coming at him had been manipulated it would be way stronger especially in a harbor city like Flagsmaine. The water burst through the ice wall and 2 of them pierced through Mahōs torso and shoulder. Dropping to the ground and coughing up some blood, Mahō had to figure something out, but it kinda seemed hopeless. 2 daggers surrounded in lightning flew through the door and when the duke tried to catch them they shocked him and the Gray charged in and started exchanging blows with the duke before he could fully recover it only took about 5 seconds and 8 blows before Gray realized he was extremely out matched by this man and blinked back by Mahō who was no longer in the shadows but instead crouched on one knee holding his shoulder and slightly panting.
"You boys made a big mistake waking me up, you could've killed me in slumber, but now you have both signed your death certificates." The duke of Flagsmaine cackled as if he was some generic evil villain.
"You're just cocky because we haven't been trying. Now it's time to get serious." Gray responds in an unconvincing tone.
Mahō blew a wind blast at the wall behind him launching him forward at the duke and a ball of lightning and fire started to form inside his hand before he got there, and then he hit the duke with it, the duke flying back into the wall surprised that the kid had it in him to pull something like that off stood up pissed and spit some blood on the floor and wipe some of the burnt scruff off of his stomach before snarling at the boy and launching a blast of water and ice at him and piercing his stomach all the way through leaving him on the floor crying and holding the blood slipping out of his stomach. Gray took the advantage and blinked behind the duke and went to slice his throat and he succeeded but not before the duke launched a blast of ice spikes out of his back impaling Gray in 5 different spots and leaving them both on the floor, the duke trying to hold his throat as he bled out and Gray rolling away in agony from the puncture wounds on his body.
07:20 The next day
Springing up from a laying down, Mahō grabs his stomach, "Fuck, why does it hurt so bad." He says as he drops back down to his knees and holding his stomach.
"Lay back down idiot, I wasn't fully able to heal our wounds. I only know a minor healing spell which thankfully at least let you live. Why would you rush in like that and sacrifice yourself? This isn't even your fight." Gray said in an annoyed tone.
"I-I, I just wanted to help, I was telling the truth when I said I wanted to make a difference." Mahō whispered in response before laying back down and falling asleep again.
17:00
Mahō woke up to a fire and the smell of food, rolling over he saw gray sitting in the corner, looks like they are in a cave of sorts and by the sounds they are down by the ocean.
"Where are we?" Mahō asked
"In a cave under some cliffs just outside the city, I couldn't get us any further without draining my mana completely and killing myself." Gray responded, seemingly in a better mood.
"Better than lying dead in a duke's mansion for sure, huh, gray, I can't believe we got him, He was so much stronger than I was expecting. If he wasn't cocky we would have been dead." Mahō said.
"Yeah He was probably one of the strongest dukes in this country, we got very unlucky, and I was lied to before I came here about his strength, I was told he was around the middle lower end of dukes in this country." Gray responded mad but in a light-hearted tone.
Some more conversation happened between Gray and Mahō before they ate and rested for a few more hours before leaving in the middle of the night to make some distance from the city. Travel was slow, and it took them 12 days to make it back to Eon Nexus, the largest city in the Kingdom of Eon.
