THEY WANT TO ANOTHER VILLAGE. NOW IT HAPPENED AS THEY JOURNEYED ON THE ROAD, THAT SOMEONE SAID TO HIM, LORD, I WILL FOLLOW YOU WHEREVER YOU GO. AND JESUS SAID TO HIM, FOXES HAVE HOLES AND BIRDS OF THE AIR HAVE NESTS, BUT THE SON OF MAN HAS NOWHERE TO LAY HIS HEAD. THEN HE SAID TO ANOTHER, FOLLOW ME. BUT HE SAID, LORD, LET ME FIRST GO AND BURY MY FATHER. JESUS SAID TO HIM, LET THE DEAD BURY THEIR OWN DEAD, BUT YOU GO AND PREACH THE KINGDOM OF GOD. AND ANOTHER ALSO SAID, LORD I WILL FOLLOW YOU, BUT LET ME FIRST GO AND BID THEM FAREWELL WHO ARE AT MY HOUSE. BUT JESUS SAID TO HIM, NO ONE, HAVING PUT HIS HAND TO THE PLOUGH, AND LOOKING BACK, IS FIT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
Luke 9, 56-62.
The Lord was with his disciples on his way to Jerusalem - to the cross. In one village the Samanthas would not receive Him, so that two disciples wanted to command fire to come down from heaven. But the son of God had come to earth in grace (vv. 51-55). Then three examples shows us what the discipleship of Jesus involves:
Whoever wishes to follow Christ must be prepared to share his fate with Him, even at expense of things we are accustomed to.
Whoever wishes to follow Christ must give Him the first place. There is no other precedence. The man who wanted to wait till his father had died and was buried had got his priority wrong.
Whoever wishes to follow Christ must value discipleship more than Human relationship and courtesy. If following Chris means anything to us, it must mean everything.
