Max was shocked by Wir's revelation.
He hasn't expected it in the slightest yet it came up.
When he received the leaf from Ryuk, he had thought that whatever was sealed within would naturally be transferred to him the moment he was done with the mission but now that he thought about it… that made no sense.
Ryuk might be an Elf but he wasn't omnipotent.
There's no way he would have possessed the ability to ensure that Max would complete the mission first before he got the reward.
This means he trusted Max well enough to complete the mission first before attempting to get whatever was inside the leaf.
This is what should have happened but with the way things were now, Max had no choice but to consider ways to gain more power.
The fact that information about the leaf fell into his grasp without having to look for it was rather convenient, especially considering his current situation.
