Chapter 77 - Chapter 77: At the Frontlines (IV) Proud and Ignorant

Kilian groaned as his mind came too, he had been taken to the infirmary barracks at the camp, where after receiving first aid had passed out.

The worry about the giant spiders was now the knights' problem.

Cal and himself had both reported the incident in the woods with similar stories, but the officer who had taken the report had remained unconcerned.

Even now when he was looking around, it did not seem as if there was anything urgent going on, just the same chatter and clinging of metal as always.

"Did you hear about the newcomers?"

The voice was faint and the origin was from someone in the room.

Several stretchers were empty but there were still some knights who were occupying some.

"Apparently they saw giant spiders in the woods." The sentence was followed by muffled laughter, and Kilian realized what was going on.

'They don't believe us.' He sighed and sat up to get on his feet.

"What are you doing?"

A man nearby came over fast and placed a heavy hand on Kilian's shoulder pushing him back down on the stretcher.

"The commander will see you soon, you are not to leave until then." The man continued in a bored tone.

Kilian gritted his teeth and looked up furiously.

There was a small condescending smile on the man's tanned face, and the auburn hair reminded Kilian of Dante, though the shade was many times lighter.

"We already gave our report and I don't have any injuries. Where is Cal?"

Kilian looked around again, noticing he had not seen Cal in the infirmary, though the young man had been more hurt than Kilian with his thigh getting stabbed.

"He is currently being interrogated by the Commander."

Was the reply he got, and Kilian got back on his feet before the brusque man could stop him.

"Why he has done nothing wrong," Kilian exclaimed.

"We know…"

There was a pause where the man flashed an even bigger grin while staring at the agitated Kilian.

'They think this is my fault? How are they even going to spin that?'.

The entrance to the tent opened and another knight stepped in signaling to the man beside Kilian.

A strong hand gripped tightly around Kilian's upper arm, dragging him out of the infirmary.

"It seems like it is your turn now, young Heathgrave."

Kilian clenched his jaw shut as he was pushed inside of a large tent.

Cal was kneeling on the ground in front of the knight commander.

It was the same man who had received Kilian from the mercenaries, and he was sitting behind a wooden desk, ignoring the presence of the two young men in front of him.

"I hear you encountered some huge dangerous creatures in the woods."

The man did not raise his eyes to meet theirs.

"Yes, we already spoke of it ye…"

A hand was raised signaling Kilian to be quiet.

"Nonsense, you say they are right at the border of the forest, but none of the knights on patrol have ever spoken of this."

Kilian's mind raged.

'He doesn't believe us.'

A small whimper came from Cal, and Kilian could see visible bruises on the face.

'I don't think he got those last night.'

Kilian's eyes widened and stared back at the commander and continued.

"Everything we reported, is as it happened."

"Is that so."

The scraping of the wooden chair being moved was heard and the commander was on his feet in an instant, walking around the table to stand in front of Kilian.

"I expect a commoner to lie, but a noble…"

Kilian was shorter and smaller than the man but did not let the build in front of him intimidate him.

' I am a Valen, and I have done nothing wrong.' He reminded himself.

"It seems if you are lying too, you must be the one responsible, I am sure the poor commoners could not have spoken against your will."

Cal lifted his head and stared at Kilian.

His friend had not known Kilian was a noble, and Kilian had never mentioned it on purpose.

A finger stabbed at Kilian's forehead.

"You screwed up on the mission, the missing commoners either deserted the mission, or were killed because of your carelessness."

There was a sinister grin on the man's face, as if the current situation amused him.

"I am sure the monsters you have described are either nonexistent or overly exaggerated."

Kilian moved his head from the stabbing pressure of the commander's finger and took a step back.

"We have given our report and that is how it went, you should not be telling us what happened but investigate it for yourself."

The grin disappeared on the man's face and an angry snicker replaced it.

"It is not up to you to tell me what to do or not, your family put you here, specifically in a position where you were not in charge even if you are a noble, you have no say."

Kilian knew this conversation was going nowhere but tried to stand his ground, if anything then they needed to get warned before those creatures attacked.

'If we aren't ready then a lot of people will die before countermeasures can be set up.'

His thoughts were already thinking of how to deal with the giant spiders, but the commander ripped his mind back to the current reality.

A foot kicked Cal next to Kilian, but the young man just sat back up as if nothing had happened.

"I will hold off from punishing this one, as he was just doing what you instructed him to."

Kilian had to hold back his anger, he could feel the seething urge to attack this man, but he was still there as Kilian Heathgrave, and his position there was decided by the family.

"So why don't you come with us and show us those big monsters you talked about."

Kilian looked up in confusion.

'He just said I was lying, why does he want me to go investigate with him?'

Something was off, they clearly did not believe him, so why would they drag him back to the forest?

'Did the Count tell them to get rid of me?' They could easily say that Kilian had tried to desert or was attacked by the creatures in the forest.

'I need to follow them for now, I can not make a scene.'

Kilian smiled up at the man in front of him.

"Of course, I will guide you to the creatures."

The one difference in this scenario was that Kilian knew what to expect in the forest, but the others did not.

All he had to do was make sure they encountered one of those monstrous things before this commander decided it was time to get rid of Kilian.
