Chapter 12 - The Sea Tornado Crew

{Captain Kharatos Krypton's Story}

The Mr. Ajay Kumar took a break and continued "Now get ready to listen about his crew." And the he started to tell us the story about his rule.

"It was year, two thousand forty

that is 2040 AD, there were no more pirates in the sea. All the seas were protected by the countries near them. At that tim Captain Kharatos Krypton was 22 years he started an training camp to select his crew. Only 8 peoples including him, his brother and his grandfather came to join his crew. He asked his his grandfather about how his crew should be selected. His grandfather told him that the crew of a sailing ship is divided between officers (the captain and his subordinates) and seamen or ordinary hands. An able seaman was expected to "hand, reef, and steer" (handle the lines and other equipment, reef the sails, and steer the vessel). The crew is organized to stand watch, the oversight of the ship for a period, typically four hours each. Then he told him to began with selection of officers.

His grandfather the first officer is the Captain. He also told him about captain.

The captain or master is the ship's highest responsible officer, acting on behalf of the ship's owner. Whether the captain is a member of the deck department or not is a matter of some controversy, and generally depends on the opinion of an individual captain. The captain is responsible for the day to day affairs of the ship under his command. It is his responsibility to ensure that all the departments perform to the requirements. Therefore, the heads of the various departments answer to him. The captain represents the owner and hence is called "master." After Kharatos Krypton come to knew completely about the job of Captain he announced himself to be the Captain of the ship.

Then his grandfather told him to select the people for deck department. His grandfather told him to select deck officers first. He also told that Deck officers are licensed mariners who are responsible for the navigation and safe passage of the ship.

His grandfather told that the first deck officer is the chief mate.

The chief mate is the head of the deck department on a merchant's vessel, second in command after the ship's master. The chief mate's primary responsibilities are the vessel's cargo operations, its stability, and supervising the deck crew. The mate is responsible for the safety and security of the ship, as well as the welfare of the crew on board. The chief mate typically stands the 4 to 8 navigation watch as OICNW (officer in charge of the navigational watch), directing the bridge team. Some crews have additional Third mates, which allow the chief mate to not stand navigational watch, and focus more on cargo and deck operations. Additional duties include maintenance of the ship's hull, cargo gears, accommodations, life saving appliances, and fire fighting appliances. The chief mate also trains the crew and cadets on various aspects like safety, fire fighting, search and rescue, and other contingencies. The chief officer assumes command of the whole ship in the absence or incapacitation of the master.

After this discussion Captain Kharatos Krypton decided to make his younger brother, Jagadagger Krypton as the chief mate.

Then his grandfather told that the second deck officer is the second mate.

The second mate is a qualified OICNW (officer in charge of the navigational watch) watch stander, directing the bridge team and navigating the ship. The second mate is the third most experienced deck department officer after the captain or master and chief mate. The second mate's primary duty is navigational, which includes updating charts and publications, keeping them current, making passage plans, and all aspects of ship navigation. The second mate's other duties may include directing line handlers, cargo watches, directing anchor detail and training and instructing crew members.

After knowing about it he took a test of everyone interested in bieng the second mate. The people who wanted to be the second mate had to show their navigation skills. Everyone there didn't knew anything about navigation using star so no one was selected. He decided to select the second mate later and asked his grandfather to tell about third deck officer.

His grandfather told that the third deck officer is the third mate.

The third officer is a qualified OICNW (officer-in-charge of the navigational watch) watch stander, junior to the second mate. When on navigational watch, the third mate directs the bridge team, maneuvering the vessel, keeping it safe and on track. The third mate's primary duty is matters of safety, inspecting gear lockers, lifeboats, and all equipment onboard ensuring that it is safe and operational. Other duties include directing line handlers, cargo watches, directing anchor details and training and instructing crew members. He or she is normally the part of the command team during emergencies and drills. After knowing about it he took test of the people present in the training camp. But no one qualified for the position of the third mate. He decided to select a third mate later and asked his grandfather to go for the next post.

His grandfather told that the fourth deck officer is the Deck cadet.

A deck cadet or trainee navigational officer or nautical apprentice is an apprentice who has to learn the basic duties of a deck officer onboard a ship. Deck cadets after sufficient sea time and exams attain certificate of competency of OICNW (officer-in-charge of the navigational watch). After hearing about this post he decided that the post is not much important so they should select it later and asked to tell the next post.

His grandfather told that, he has told him about all the deck officers now the second type of posts of deck department are Deck ratings.

Mariners without a certificate of competence are called ratings. They assist in all other tasks that can arise during a voyage. This includes for example, mooring, cleaning of the ship and its holds and repairing broken lines and ropes. These are physically challenging jobs and have to be done regardless of the weather.

His grandfather told that the first deck rating is the Boatswain.

The boatswain is the highest ranking unlicensed (rating) in the deck department. The boatswain generally carries out the tasks instructed by the chief mate, directing the able seamen and ordinary seamen. The boatswain generally does not stand a navigational watch.

After this discussion Captain Kharatos Krypton selected a man 'Kisaka Rasita' and 'Fartak Zeeshat' who were present in the training camp as the boatswains. Kisaka Rasita was Captain Kharatos Krypton's trusted man. Then he asked his grandfather to tell about the next post.

His grandfather told that the second deck rating is the Able Bodied Seaman

An able bodied seaman (AB) works under the boatswain, completing tasks such as working mooring lines, operating deck gear, standing anchor details, and working cargo. An able bodied seaman also stands a navigational watch, generally as a lookout or helmsman.

After the discussion he announced all the remaining three men in the camp, (Xather Kristal, Zekshal Christal and Aaaaaadhlee Junlak) as the able bodied seamen but they still neaded many people in the crew. So he asked his grandfather about how to bring more people. His grandfather told him about an Island where he could get the best crewmate but he would have to pay a huge price. Captain Kharatos Krypton agreed to pay the price. Then they took a sail boat and came to Amanaviye Dweep. It took them about 2 monthes to reach Amanaviye Dweep.

There was an oligarchy government (An oligarchy is a form of government characterized by the rule of a few persons or families.) There were 8 people who lead the oligarchy government.

1. Head Ghost Lady

2. Medium Leader

3. Gaurdian Werewolf

4. Sorcerer in Chief

5. Zombie King

6. Skelton General

7. Yamdut 216

8. Vampire Supreme

Captain Kharatos Krypton got permission to meet the oligarchy leaders. He asked them to help him in making his crew. Oligarcy leaders agreed to allow him to start a camp and select his crew members but, at the cost of his life. They told him that if he takes crewmates from the island he will have to secure the island after his mission is over. He agreed to this proposal. Then he started a training camp.

Firstly, they wanted to select someone to work as the second mate, they took a test. For the Navigation skills. An 'Gyanendra Ullukah' named owl had amazing navigation skills. He was selected as the second mate. But he had a condition that he will only join if his friend 'Avinashi Chamgadar' named Vampire comes with the crew. When asked what job Avinashi can do, Gyanendra told them he could learn from the officers and assit them in there works. Captain Kharatos Krypton asked his grandfather about his views. His grandfather told him to select Avinashi as Deck cadet. Then they took another test to select the third mate. An eagle, 'Adbhud Baaj' was selected because of his amazing eyesight. Then they slected 6 Mediums and 5 Vampires as deck cadets on request Oligarchy leaders.

Now it was time to select more Able Bodied Seamen. On request of Oligarchy leaders, they selected 5 Ghosts as able bodied seamen.

Then he asked his grandfather to tell about next post.

His grandfather told him that the third and the last deck rating is Ordinary seaman.

The lowest ranking personnel in the deck department. An ordinary seaman (OS) generally helps out with work that able seamen do. Other tasks include standing lookout, and generally cleaning duties.

On hearing this Captain Kharatos Krypton annoced that there are 24 vacancies for the post of Ordinary seaman in his ship.

About 50 citizens were interested in that job so they took a test of them and selected the top twenty four as the Ordinary seamen.

Then he asked his grandfather about the next job.

His grandfather told him that the deck department is completed and now they should recruit people for Sailing Department.

For the engineering department they needed Engineering officers.

An engineer is commonly considered a high officer in ranking in the ship. The engineers are also called technical officers. They are responsible for keeping the ship and the machinery running. Today, ships are complex units that combine a lot of technology within a small space. This includes not only the engine and the propulsion system, but also, for example, the electrical power supply, devices for loading and discharging, garbage incineration and fresh water generators. An engineer is commonly considered a high officer in ranking in the ship.

The first Engineering officer is the Chief engineer.

The chief engineer, commonly referred to as "The chief", or just "chief", is responsible for all operations and maintenance that have to do with the ship, all the machinery of the ship and equipment throughout the ship. The chief engineer, commonly referred to as "The chief", or just "chief", is responsible for all operations and maintenance that have to do with all machinery and equipment throughout the ship.

Captain Kharatos Krypton again took a test and selected 'Bhootnath Pandey' a ghost as the chief engineer.

Then he asked grandfather about the next jobs. His grandfather told him that the next posts are

1. Second engineer

The second engineer or first assistant engineer is the officer responsible for supervising the daily maintenance and operation of the engine department. He or she reports directly to the chief engineer.

2. Third engineer

Depending on usage, "the Second" or "the Third" is also typically in charge of fueling (a.k.a. bunkering), granted the officer holds a valid Person In Charge (PIC) endorsement for fuel transfer operations.

3. Fourth engineer

The fourth engineer or third assistant engineer is junior to the second assistant engineer or third engineer in the engine department.

Captain Kharatos Krypton wanted to take a test but Bhootnath Pandey stopped Captain Kharatos Krypton and requested Captain Kharatos Krypton to allow him to take his team members, 'Bhooteshwar', 'Rakash' and 'Pishachni' as Second, third and fourth engineers respectively. Captain Kharatos Krypton agreed and allowed him. Then he asked his grandfather about the next post.

His grandfather told him that they have got all the engine officers now they need Engine Ratings.

The first engine rating is Motorman.

A motorman, also known as a qualified member of the engineering department (QMED), is the seniormost rate in the engine room of a ship. The motorman performs a variety of tasks connected with the maintenance and repair of engine room, fireroom, machine shop, ice-machine room, and steering-engine room equipment. The motorman inspects equipment such as pumps, turbines, distilling plants, and condensers, and prepares record of condition. The motorman lubricates and maintains machinery and equipment such as generators, steering systems, lifeboats, and sewage disposal systems, and also cleans and restores tools and equipment.

For motor men they took a test and selected 2 Werewolf, 2 Owl Man, 1 Rakash and 1 Yeti.

Then he asked about the next job

His grandfather told him that the second engine rating is Oiler.

An oiler (also known as a "greaser") is a worker whose main job is to oil machinery. It's main job is to lubricate the machinery.

The selected 12 oilers. Then Captain Kharatos Krypton asked about the next job.

His grandfather told him that the next one is the wiper.

A wiper is a position responsible for both cleaning the engine spaces and machinery of a ship and assisting the ship's engineers as directed.

So, they selected 12 wipers. Then he asked about the next job. His grandfather told him about the Electro technical officer.

The electro-technical officer sometimes referred to as the electrical engineer is in charge of all the electrical systems on the ship. The electrical engineer is one of the most vital positions in the technical hierarchy of a ship and engineer is responsible for their assigned work under the chief engineer's instructions.

Unlike engineers, the ETO does not carry out an assigned engine room watch. Instead, he is normally on call 24 hours a day and generally works a daily shift carrying out electrical and electronic maintenance, repairs, installations, and testing.

Captain Kharatos Krypton selected a Fox as his electro-technical officer.

And asked about next post.

His grandfather told him now they need warden officers that are
