Vanessa Winthrop was taking the last flight of stairs that led up to her room when she heard the sound and stopped. She had a nagging feeling in her guts that something was up.
Where had the noise come from?
The walls here were thick, made of bricks. It was impossible for sounds to filter in through the walls just as it was impossible to find cats on the moon. And yet, the sound seemed to come from somewhere in the house.
She was not sure where exactly or what the sound was exactly It was not yet clear to her ears, so she stopped and scanned the area until her eyes fell on what she thought was responsible for bringing the sound so close to her ears. It was an air vent on the wall, embedded in the middle of some decorative marble tiles.
