Ethan could not contain his joy, but for the sake of what he hoped to achieve with his new acquaintance, he struggled to keep it to himself. Before he'd stopped on the road on sighting her by the roadside, he was headed for the clubhouse where he intended to drink himself to stupor and forget about all his problems.
It turned out that that would no longer be necessary. When Vanessa left him, Ethan had felt all the emotions in him go numb. Like a body without a soul, he roamed the streets in the night turning people as he went and devouring the ones he wished to devour.
It was a kind of life he had long left behind but had had to revisit because of the way life had dealt with him. The master had withdrawn his offer to him and he had once again been relegated to oblivion. It hurt him that one moment he mattered to the master and the next moment, he was nothing but as worthless as a piece of pawn that had been tossed aside.
