Now that Lucas had chosen his teachers, he only needed to cover the fees. For Elam, he needed to fulfill a request, but he said that he would ask for it later, so that wasn't an issue. He only needed the corpse of someone to hand in and the second teacher would be fixed.
Lucas wasn't such a monster that he would kill the first person he laid his eyes on. Visiting the slums and taking a random person with him could work, but Lucas would rather kill those that he didn't like. As always, he had two sides in his brain, one a lot darker than the other one, making his internal headspace a constant debate. Luckily, both didn't have any trouble finding possible victims, they just needed to decide which one.
'Why not just kill them?'
'We're not mass murderers.'
'For as long as we don't need to be, I know, but still, wouldn't it be fun to just go all out?'
'No, we'll pick this one.'
Lucas had asked around for the most known nobles in the city. Then he visited them one by one to see how they behaved. He wasn't very skilled in stealth, but most of the nobles didn't always have enough funds to hire a mage. Lucas immediately removed the ones with protection and then went on a hunt for the most despicable noble.
Lucas chose a local baron called Bart, after visiting his mansion and using his senses he found multiple underground dungeons for slaves and other malpractices. If the Order of Light knew what was happening inside the baron's home, it wouldn't take long before he would be either converted or killed off.
Using muscle strengthening to jump over the gate he waltzed over to the back entrance. Going inside he knocked anyone unconscious that he came across. Making his way down to the basement he found what could only be described as a sex slave market. There were multiple cells containing who knows how many different slaves, all young females.
One of the chained-up slaves saw Lucas enter, he wasn't one of the normal customers. His bright hair gave off a sense of pride and made the girl think her savior was there. Her eyes opened wide and she quickly tried to make contact.
"Help us! Please get us out of here!"
Lucas looked at the girl before deciding what to do.
'Just leave them here, they're useless, plus they know your identity. If you take them with you they would be dependent on you or give away the perpetrator.'
'If we leave them here, they won't live a happy life. We want to create a world where we can live freely without any worries, killing every evil person was already an impossible ideal. Saving everyone in need as well would be even harder.'
'So what are you going to do?'
Confirming that the baron he was after was indeed evil enough to be killed, Lucas decided to help out. Killing the baron wasn't difficult at all, he wasn't a mage nor a martial artist, merely an overweight man living off the money from his crimes. There wasn't any pity, just a body to collect.
It didn't take long before rumors started to spread in the city when one of the nobles suddenly disappeared overnight. Some say that he traveled to another city, and others say that he was assassinated. The cold and pale body on the table of Gilbert proved it was the latter.
"So, who did you kill?", Gilbert wasn't interested in any of the local powers as he wasn't the best conversation maker. "Bart, local baron with a pension for kidnapping the children in the slums before raping them and selling them to a brothel."
"Hihihi, I would say that you've done a good job, but...", pointing at the obese dead man's corpse, "couldn't you have killed someone skinnier? Now I'll have to remove all this excess meat."
Lucas shook his head, but he was somewhat glad. He had two teachers that were strong enough for him to be incapable of sensing their power levels. There were only a few days before the school would open and the lessons would begin. So until then, he would have to keep himself busy. Since he didn't want to waste any time mingling with other students he looked for a place to sleep. There were dormitories in the school, he merely had to find them.
Those few resting passed with nothing of note, Lucas tried to train his magic, but he didn't have a way forward. He was wasting his time exploring the city like he was a little kid. Entering random stores just to browse since he didn't have enough money on him. He was making a mental note of everything that was for sale. Besides exploring, he started to make a list of everyone he deemed unworthy of living. He wasn't planning on mass murdering everyone, merely keeping tabs on the ones that should be removed.
Lucas didn't have a higher calling like others to protect the weak, he had a selfish wish and in order to reach it, he would need to remove certain factors.
Eventually, the school had its grand opening with a big feast. Lucas didn't join the festivities, because he didn't see the point. So he immediately went to his first class, one given by Gilbert. Since he only had two teachers, there was a giant hole in his schedule that he needed to fill up. Wasting time loitering around the city didn't give him any gratification.
The students from Virel's class were standing around at the school's welcoming. The ones forced in rumors had a spree day. Next to the fact that the school opened and many were curious about the most powerful, handsome, or beautiful girl, they could collect scoop by scoop. Not only that, but the fact that one of the more popular nobles disappeared merely spurred them up to gather even more info.
"Have you heard of the baron Bart? Apparently, he got killed by one of his concubines that got tired of him.", a popular student said.
"What? Where did you hear that? All I know is that a mercenary band came by and killed most in the mansion.", a second one chimed in, only to be corrected once more by a third.
"No, no no, you're all wrong. The bodies in the mansion belonged to a bunch of slaves, no staff was hurt and the baron is missing. For all we know, he is somewhere else gathering more slaves."
"Hahaha, not if the Order of Light has anything to say about it. I can already guess they've searched his house. Not only that, did you feel the small earthquake not long ago? I was close by and saw a monster fight against a bunch of mages!"
The students kept talking and discussing recent events, not at all caring about the truth, as the most exciting thing was a bombastic and interesting story.
Lucas found his way through the maze-like structure of the school before arriving at Gilbert's class. It was time for his first lesson.
