Clothes can be exchanged for larger sizes for agents who mutate. One of the benefits of having every clothing regulated to only be simple designs that are available in 5 colors. White, black, and 3 shades of gray. The plan is to keep one of Adalia's shirts, but she tears it in half just by trying to see if it even fits.
The couple spends the rest of the days having all sorts of fun with one another. They get on a few rides, watch a rock band perform on stage, and see a movie in the epsilon district, among other things.
Despite having the name 'The King's Kitchen' the restaurant sells their food at a reasonable price, though, with the quality of everything they provide, still not where just about anyone can go often. However, treating her partner for a brunch at such a place, because she forgets about their anniversary yesterday, is beyond worth it. In fact, Adalia deems it not enough. That's why they go wall climbing, for about an hour or so, before riding bicycles on top of the walls.
The massive walls of The Grand Metropolis have roads on top of them which only authorized people can access. The helsing agents are allowed access even in their off time; in the morning and afternoon, plenty of them go onto the walls to exercise. The way the government sees it, having agents in their off time look over the city from above the walls, without necessarily being paid for it, is a good thing. After a few hours, which they spend chatting while looking at the scenery, Adalia and Catrina go off the walls to play tennis.
Being A-type mutations enhance their physical performance, especially their stamina. After all of the activities, none of them break a single sweat. Not that it has ever been a problem, though now, Adalia won't have to worry about saving her energy for duties as much anymore. Besides, it's good to familiarize herself with her newfound strength and size. Throughout the day, Adalia has blown up 3 cans of drinks, 2 bags of snacks, and 5 water bottles while trying to open them and broke a mug from laughing while holding it. Problems which Catrina has for the first few days after her own surgery.
=====================================
The bus going to the industrial district and the wall construction outside of the city is a metal behemoth. One can even say it is a ferry with wheels. There are 4 rows of 4 seats inside. Adalia and Catrina sit together by a window. The first night shift starts an hour ago so they are the only passengers as far as they are concerned.
Ever since they sit Adalia has been looking at her phone, chatting with someone. Of course, Catrina respects her partner's privacy, but she starts to feel a bit lonely from the silence. She decides to speak out the first thing which comes to mind, that is, "Who are you chatting with?"
"Kaiden," Adalia replies without looking away.
Catrina raises an eyebrow and a corner of her mouth. "Hmm, you have something planned?"
"Why would you think that?" Adalia turns to face Catrina.
"I don't know. You don't normally choose to be on outskirts watch, but you booked the shift since last night. It's also on Kaiden's sector and now you're chatting with him. Is this the thing you come up with for yesterday, baby?"
Taking a few moments to smile, look away, chuckle, and shake her head Adalia responds, "You'll see."
"Alright, then. Keep your secrets."
A muffled boom shakes and rattles every bolts, screws, and plates of the running metal monstrosity. The floor shakes, the seats shake, the walls shake, the windows shake. Sometimes it happens; a hunted werewolf jumps onto a large vehicle and the hunting helsing agents follow and executes them on the moving vehicle.
It happens a second time.
"See? I'm not the only one who forgets to recharge," Catrina says. Her partner isn't amused.
A third time.
"Looks like it's a C-type too," Adalia says.
Fourth time.
"No wait, multiple mutations?" Adalia holds her katana, ready to stand. Catrina holds her hammer. Both of them have their heads and ears up, focusing their senses, looking for another cue.
Fifth.
"Yeah no, something's wrong," Adalia jumps off her seat and dashes towards the staircase.
"Yup," Catrina follows.
The explosion becomes louder, the quaking, stronger, as they climb the stairs. On the second floor, Adalia checks the front section, Catrina checks the rear. Nothing. It comes from a level higher. They rush up the stairs. Open the door.
A broken flaming seat crashes just beside the door. The room is pure chaos. Shredded padding, burning, scatter all over the piles of broken seats, hanging exposed wires, and broken metal. Amid the chaos is an agent, wielding a taser spear, cracking with electricity on its head, standing against a large B-type in the process of mutating further, holding a pair of flaming swords.
The wolf ladies take none of their time. They charge their weapons, rush in, lock on the target, swing, kill the beast, which would've died if it hadn't dodged everything so perfectly, and runs away to the driver's room.
Adalia looks around for any casualties or any other werewolves. Nothing. "Where's your partner?" She asks.
"Makoto... He... Just ran off to the front," The spear agent points at the fleeing werewolf. His shirt and tie are torn and on his chest is a huge fresh burn scar in the shape of an X.
"Oh fuck... Shit, I'm sorry," Adalia says.
"Well, he's not your partner anymore, but he is running away. Come on!" Catrina shouts as she chases the mutated agent. Adalia and the spear agent follow her.
They bust through the door into the driver's room. Makoto stands on the dashboard, over the broken windscreen, holding the bloody decapitated head of the bus driver. He snarls at the agents and leaps away. Before the agents could follow him, everything goes dark as the bus enters a tunnel.
"Fuck! He got away," Catrina slams her fist on the dashboard.
The spear agent presses a button on his watch and speaks into it, "This is lieutenant Gerardo Iglesias, we have a situation 224 A, I repeat, 224 A. Lieutenant Hisashi Makoto is on the loose just outside of eastern 5th gate number... Do any of you see what number on the gate?"
"508," Adalia and Catrina almost reply at the exact same time. Catrina is looking back at the chaos while Adalia has her head out the windscreen looking left and right.
The tunnel is long and dark, that is how thick the walls are. Adalia, with her now enhanced senses, however, can see what's up ahead. The Grand Metropolis is expanding out layer by layer, with massive walls and deep moats separating them and bridges connecting them; beyond the 5th wall is a layer still under construction. Though some buildings are finished, they're just a bucket of sand on a beach. Blocking the street are construction machinery and workers, on the path of the massive bus.
"Hey, Gerardo, is it? Can you drive?" Adalia asks with her eyes wide and locked on the bright end of the tunnel.
Gerardo is baffled. "No, why?"
"Of course, none of us can, why would any of us can? Shit, one of these gotta be the brake," Adalia mumbles under her breath. She pushes away the headless body of the driver and takes the wheel.
"Addy, what are you doing?"
"Trying to reduce the number of casualties." The bus speeds up, flailing everyone inside. Adalia bumps her head on the steering wheel and the booming sound of the horn thunders in the tunnel. "That's the gas, let's leave that alone."
"Addy!" Catrina shouts.
The bus roars out the tunnel, shaking the bridge. "No, no, nope, nu-uh, no, nah, no, nope, no," Adalia presses every button, pulls every lever, flicks every switch, and steps on every pedal and the bus does everything except stopping.
"Let's just jump out of here!"
"There are people, Kitty!"
"THEN DO SOMETHING!"
"I'M TRYING!"
There doesn't seem to be anyone on the left construction. Hopefully, there's no one there. She can only hope there's no one there because the only thing she can come up with is to crash the bus into the building.
"FUCK!" Adalia shouts, "you guys hold on tight!" She spins the wheel.
The bus swings to the left, but it has so much momentum it tips itself over on its side. It slams onto the road and drags with a deafening metallic flaring screech. The three agents are so pumped with adrenaline they aren't processing anything that's going on. All the construction workers scream and shout as they scatter and flee from the scene.
CRASH!
They break past the fences straight onto the unfinished building. The bus bends and breaks on impact. The loose steel of the construction shakes and rattles. Dust fog covers the scene for a few seconds before clearing up.
People start to crowd around the bus. The first to come out of the broken windscreen is Catrina. She coughs and fans away the dust flying on her face. Gerardo crawls out of the bus and Adalia climbs her way out with Catrina's help.
"You guys ok? Catrina? Gerardo?" Her breathing is still heavy from the adrenaline rush.
"I'm good, you good?"
"Don't worry about me," Gerardo says before throwing up. His watch buzzes.
"Lieutenant Gerardo, come is lieutenant."
"Lieutenant Gerardo reporting," He coughs a few times as he stands up.
"The zone's active agents have claimed your situation. Return to headquarters for partner reassignment."
"Copy that, Lieutenant Gerardo Iglesias returning to headquarters immediately."
The crowd is talking with themselves. The sounds of chatter and murmur fill the scene.
"Hey! Anybody injured?" Adalia shouts.
"What happened?" One of the workers shouts back.
"A werewolf killed the driver. Don't worry, everything is under control. Well, everything besides this. The agents of that zone are taking care of it, now" Gerardo shouts. He turns to the other agents. "Hey guys, I'm so sorry for getting you involved, and thanks for helping."
"Hey, it's chill dude. It's all part of the job," Catrina says, patting his back.
"Yeah, it's fine, but your partner, Makoto, right? He fucking turned, I'm so sorry, you sure you're ok?" Adalia's concern is all over her face.
Gerardo is silent for a few moments. "Yeah, yeah I'm good, don't even worry about it. You just do your thing. I'm gonna go back to HQ now." He brushes himself, picks up his spear, and walks away.
"Okay, take care!" Adalia says. "So, I guess we're walking the rest of our way."
"Damn, I would've gone easy with my legs if I know this would happen," Catrina chuckles and groans.
"Oh yeah, I'm also tired. But we gotta go you know?" Adalia chuckles along.
One of the main pillars of the construction breaks with a bang. Parts of the skeleton collapse and crumble with loud ringing noises. The workers scream and run away. The agents Took a glimpse before dashing.
One of the workers trips and falls. A platform is about to hit him. Adalia leaps in and clears him out of the way just in time. It's not over.
More things are falling down. With both of them on the ground, Adalia has to push, pull, roll, and kick herself and the worker away from harm. They barely miss the falling metal rods, bars, platforms, pipes, and crates. Her heart is pounding harder than a meteor and racing faster than a train. A lot of platforms are still connected to the main pillar that is now falling at them. They can't dodge this one. not together. Adalia throws the worker and jumps away. She hops, squeezes, and pushes in and out of the rubble and along the raining metal. Like a dolphin jumping out of the ocean or a snake slithering through the roots of a tree.
Somehow, she made it out. Even Adalia herself is surprised. Her eyes wide and won't shut. Her heart pounds and won't stop. Her breaths deep and won't silence. Her sweat cold and freezing.
"Addy, Addy, Addy!" Catrina runs in. She grabs her partner and looks for any injury, blood, bruise, scratch, or broken bone. All while brushing dust off Adalia's shirt. "You're good? Please tell me you're good. Anything hurts?"
Adalia still hasn't processed anything. "I... Am fine," Her deep breaths interrupt between her words, "What... Happened? I don't know what happened so what did happen. I am alive. How am I alive? How did I do that? I don't know I can do that. What did I just do? I need to lay down. Let me lay down. I'm gonna lay down." So, she does.
"Okay, okay baby, take your time," Catrina backs a few steps with hands up beside her face.
Adalia's diaphragm expands and shrinks so much, almost like a balloon. "Hey, Kitty, change of plan. Can you carry me there?"
"Okay, I can do that, despite being exhausted, Catrina grabs and lifts her partner.
"Wait, shit, fuck, where's the dud, the guy, the worker, where is he? Is he ok?"
"He's fine, he's over there," Catrina points with her head at the worker Adalia saved. He's sitting by the rubbles with other workers talking with him.
"Can we like, go to him for a bit?"
"Sure." Catrina carries Adalia over to the worker.
"Hey, you good?" Says Adalia.
The man looks up, eyes wide and shaking. "You, you saved me. Thank you." His voice breathy and shaking.
"Ok, good, thank you. Don't worry, it's fine, just doing my job."
After a few more words, Catrina carries Adalia to the wall construction.
