I bend down immediately to gather the broken pieces and survey if the lamp had any hope of survival. Abruptly two pairs of feet rush into the living room.
"Anna" Kyle calls out with a large amount of concern
"Miss West?" another voice says but with a hint of shock. I immediately know whose voice it is and mentally wince at the thought of what could be going through Mr. Miller's head at the moment. Staying glued to the floor is not an option although I wish it was. I'm not a child, I have work to do and we're all adults, so what if I spent the night at my friend's place who happens to be a male. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, the only problem is the way people might look at it. Which is why I'm going to stay on this floor, hiding my face from my boss and the world forever. I live here now.
"Are you okay?" Mr. Miller asks, his voice showing a little hint of concern. I take it as my cue to stand up. I nod my head slowly and get on my feet.
"Yes sir. I'm okay" I empty the broken lamp pieces on the table and turn an apologetic look towards Kyle.
"I'm sorry about your lamp"
He walks closer to me grabs my two hands in his, he examines them closely.
"You weren't hurt right?" he asks, using his fingers to search my palms for any bruises.
My gaze wanders from Kyle's weird hand movement and to Mr. Miller, He has a strange look in his eye then his normal cold expression takes over.
"I hope you two don't act this way in the office. It's simply unprofessional to be in a relationship with your colleague"
What!!?
I want to correct him but he's already out the door. That was rude, he didn't say goodbye. I yank my hands out of Kyle's.
"I'm okay. Let's just go to work"
"Yeah let's do that"
****************
You know that female thing I told y'all I hate, well it's disturbing me again. I can't get it out of my mind that Mr. Miller suggested that Kyle and I were together. I mean I don't blame him for thinking that, he saw me there pretty early anyone would have misunderstood, and assumed we were a couple but we aren't and I'm still determined to show him just how wrong he is about love but first of all I have to get rid of any idea that Kyle and I are together. Without thinking I stand up and walk towards his office, Kyle casts a questioning look my way, I shrug him off and continue on my way.
One knock, Two knocks, Three knocks. I laugh a little at how annoying the sound of the knocks may be.
"Yes, Come in" he calls out
I open the door and put on a straight face, as I open my mouth to speak I realize I have to answer a very important question, which is, why exactly am I here? Did I really just leave the comfort of my workspace and the load of work sitting on my desk to come here and clarify a misunderstanding. Oh my goodness, What the heck is this man doing to my sense of reasoning. Luckily his phone starts to ring.
"I have to get this," he says right before he picks up the phone and starts talking to the person on the other side. This is my opportunity to leave before I open my mouth and make a mistake, I start moving back towards the door but I'm stopped by the sound of his voice.
"What did you want to say?"
I clear my throat and move closer to his desk. So yeah here it goes, the reason I'm here.
"Earlier today, you made a comment that sounded like you think kyle and I are together"
He starts going through some papers on his desk.
"Yeah and?" he says paying no attention to me.
"We're not together"
"So you just sleep in the home of men you're not in a relationship with?" he flips a page of the document and continues to keep a keen interest on his desk.
"No, we're just really good friends"
He finally looks up from his desk and meets my eye.
"Look Miss west. I'm not in the mood for this meaningless conversation. If I gave off the feeling that I cared about your personal life then I think I made a mistake because there is nothing about you that excites me"
What!! I knew this was a mistake. What is wrong with this bastard that calls himself my boss, he has no manners and no leash on his tongue. I swear if he wasn't my boss I'd walk up to him and give him a punch or a backhand slap maybe even both, that would shut him up for good.
"You can leave now" he points towards the door and continues with his work. I use all the self control in me to walk out without giving him a piece of my mind.
