Slumping down on her behind, she laid down on the ground the very next second and took in large gulps of air like a starved bird.
"Gotta say, I'm mildly impressed," Kai commented and Eva rolled her eyes at his words at which he smirked.
"How do you feel?" he asked, placing his hands on his hips and Eva narrowed her brows, wondering what she should say.
"Calm?" she spoke more like a question as if she was confused by her words. After all that running, she just felt... peaceful?
Kai nodded knowingly. "That's good then."
Eva slowly sat up, looking up at him with a frown. "Why did you make me do this?"
He looked thoughtful for a while, looking up at the sky with a misty gloss in his orbs.
"You don't have wings," he spoke and Eva's frown only deepened. "When I feel overwhelmed and don't know what to do or where to go, I end up in the sky flying with no destination in mind.
"I soar across miles and when I finally feel as if it's okay to go back, it makes it easier to think and handle things better."
Eva swallowed, looking down and smiling wryly. How did she end up going to the very place where people had problems even bigger than her?
It made her feel even more down, knowing that she couldn't rely on them either.
'I'm fine alone.'
"When did you start doing this?' she questioned, and he stared at her with a dull look in his glimmering orbs.
"When he left."
_____
Eva entered the house again after bidding goodbye to Kai for the time being. His words were still echoing in her head constantly and she felt her curiosity growing each and every day.
Where had he gone?
Where was he all these decades?
How did he survive?
Questions orbited her mind like they were made to bug her, out of every person in the world. It made her restless and frustrated beyond measure but Eva couldn't help but submit to her interest once again.
As she traveled to her room, she met Davina on the way. She was in her casual clothes again and it seemed like she had been back a long time before Eva arrived.
"Training?" she guessed and Eva nodded, feeling more exhausted than ever.
"Your work done?" she asked in return.
"For now." were the only words that escaped Davina's blood-red lips as she continued walking and walked past her.
Eva was about to step forward when she heard her voice again.
"By the way, I forgot to ask this back then. How did you open the door to the backrooms?"
Eva turned around. "That's what they're called?" she inquired with a small chuckle.
Whoever was naming these people and places was surely unbelievable.
Davina only stared back at her blankly, silently waiting for her answer. Eva sighed and replied, "I just muttered the words' bastard accidentally. I think that's the code you placed on that charmed wall."
Eva had thought out her answer already. Her inquisitiveness already troubled her enough but that didn't mean she was going to go around telling people about it. Davina didn't need to place double locks on the doors, it was unnecessary.
Being a book nerd proved to be an advantage since she knew stuff that the others didn't expect her to know. That way, she could read more about this world and the human world too.
That explained the fact why Vanessa—
Eva bit her lip, reprimanding herself internally. The currently understandable fact that back in Gleana, 'Diana' had always told her to stop reading her books and going to the library. They probably didn't want her to know more information so that she could get powerful and independent.
Gain knowledge and question everything around her.
The main suspicion being her silver strands which she realized now.
All she was to them was a toy. No— a weapon that they all planned to use for their own greater good.
CLICK!
She flinched when Davina's fingers cleared in her vision and she looked at her, wondering why she couldn't just tap her shoulder to make her listen.
"Well that just means that I can't let Gwen decide my passcodes any longer," she spoke with a tired exhale and Eva watched her walk away with a thoughtful look in her eyes.
As she continued to gaze after her, her eyes almost popped out when reality itself seemed to have broken and in the blink of an eye, Davina vanished and the twist in space and time curved back to its original self.
Eva gulped, wondering when she would stop being so amazed and surprised by everything that continuously happened around her.
The last thing left for her to see was Theo transforming into a small grumpy wolf.
She softly chuckled at the idea and shook herself free of her foolish train of thought.
At the thought of him, she remembered the meeting they were supposed to have on the rooftop. The idea, surprisingly, managed to make goosebumps cover the entire surface area of her arm. Eva rubbed her skin rapidly and her eyes traveled to the staircase.
Was he waiting for her up there?
Eva looked down at herself and sniffed as she felt her shirt sticking to her body in various places. The first thing she needed to do was take a bath and clean up before gathering the courage to climb up that roof.
As she walked past his door, she paused for a minute and considered placing her ear near the keyhole. If he wasn't there, then the chances of him standing a few feet above her were a hundred percent clear.
She waited a few more seconds to hear footsteps or noise but nothing except for silence entered her ears.
That was enough to clear her doubts as she ran inside her room and slammed the door behind her quickly.
