"Now everyone, pack your things for tomorrow and don't forget to do your homework for history !"
All of my classmates groaned at the word 'homework' while others shoved their books into their bags, eager to go home with family waiting for them and things to take care of. I, however, didn't have family, having been born into this world with an absent father and causing my mother's demise during my birth. I was a pretty much considered an orphan at that point, I could've lived my life in an orphanage if it wasn't for my mother's best friend's promise to take care of me.
I'm not complaining at all, I'm glad she chose to do so in the first place.
Oh, me ? The name is Cortana Adelman and I am a senior at Global Sparks Academy, a 17-year-olds who doesn't know how to communicate with people. It isn't like I need any friends, really. My reputation was always the same ever since I came to life.
A depressing girl who says nothing and walks away cause she either didn't hear you or because she doesn't like you. People will be people and so they judge others that don't exactly do things like the majority, it's the sad truth of it. Those who are considered 'kind' are simply those with too much ambition or have rather pointless optimism. Hey, at least I wasn't lying when I said depressive.
I walked out of the class not saying anything as always, stepping out of the school gates and making my way back home like I always do. That was until I spotted a junior running right past me with a gift box in her hand, I first stopped to look at her yet found nothing suspicious until I heard a man screaming out of a bakery shop.
"DAMNED THIEF ! ROBBER! I'LL GET MY HANDS ON YOU, YOU LITTLE BRAT !"
Now that was something I didn't want to get involved in at all, but right when I was about to brush it off and walk away, I saw something I couldn't ignore.
The junior was heading straight for the street, and the light was green at the exact moment she placed a foot on the concrete road. I panicked and, without hesitation, I immediately dropped my bag to run towards her. [What was she thinking ?! Wait- More importantly, what was I doing running up to something that could kill me as well ?!]
I quickened my pace upon realizing a truck was 5 feet close to hitting her and she completely stopped in her tracks. [What the hell ?! Move you, idiot- !]
Everything went by in a flash of light, and right then, I realized she was in my arm as I practically tackled her out of the way. My body instinctively turned over to cushion our fall on the sidewalk.
I hissed in pain as my back and head hit the bricks like a bowling ball, I could've sworn someone yelled strike right then and there. When I opened my eyes the girl, I had just saved was brushing dirt off her uniform skirt and then extended her hand to help me get back on my feet.
"Thanks for saving me there! You have my utmost gratitude; I owe you a lot !" she beamed out and smiled brightly. Although I was relieved she didn't get hurt, I couldn't help but be furious about the whole situation. "WHAT IN THE WORLD WE'RE YOU THINKING ?!" I lashed out, which startled her as her smile quickly faded.
"YOU COULD'VE GOTTEN YOURSELF KILLED YOU KNOW THAT ?! SERIOUSLY, WHO IS DUMB ENOUGH TO NOT LOOK BEFORE CROSSING THE STREET, NONETHELESS I IMAGINE YOU STOLE THAT PASTRY DIDN'T YOU ?!"
I panted from how much I screamed out, I generally do not yell this hard so my vocal cords aren't used to my outbursts. I held my throat to sooth it a little, and she stood there speechless, I realized what I said was probably an unexpected response, but it wasn't a lie. The girl looked down at the box she held, and the cardboard started to cripple as her grip became more and more intense, "....I'm sorry.." she wasn't crying but the tone of her voice showed clear signs of disappointment. I sighed, "it's all right but don't be so reckless next time all right?", my statement quickly raised her mood since she raised her head back up and smiled.
"Promise! Thanks again !" and in those words, she ran away pushing pedestrians to the side in that process.
[For god's sake she's crazy...] I looked around trying to spot my bag [I should probably get my things...] I thought to myself, as I turned around the man whom she stole the gift box from was on the other side of the road. I rolled my eyes and grunted in defeat, [...And pay for the stolen pastry although she could've done it, instead of stealing it like a complete moron..].
After doing so, I finally get back on my track and arrive at the building I currently live in. [I mean- did you expect me to live on the road ?] The security guard sleeps in a chair at the front, not really doing his job, as I tap in the code for the door. Said entrance automatically opens and I step inside, turning to where the elevator should be only to be face to face with a sign saying : 'broken down.'
[....]
[they did not just do that.]
I let out a huge groan before drawing my attention to the other solution as I bitterly grimace at the thought of climbing all the way up to the 24th floor. [...the next time I see that damned landlord, I swear, I will commit a crime-] Dragging my feet towards the stair case I let out another sigh before looking back down. [my greatest enemy...fucking stairs.]
My lungs stings as I finally arrive at my apartment level, I let my bag slide off my shoulders onto the floor as drop down on my backside as well. I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear before taking in a deep breath, grabbing my backpack, reaching for the keys in my pocket and unlocking the entryway to my humble home.
