Chapter 42 - The Veil of Shadows

In the days of Balthazar, the Terror, as the kingdom rose from the ashes of the calamity, the great dragon king still young understood that strength alone could not safeguard the future. The threats he had vanquished to carve the kingdom from chaos—rogue factions, treacherous conspiracies, and ancient enemies—were not always those that could be met with open war. Some battles required silence. Some threats demanded shadows.

Thus, the Seekers were born.

A subsidiary of the Kingdom Guards, the Seekers were created to be the unseen hand of justice and security, a silent blade against forces that sought to destabilize the kingdom from within and beyond. While the Kingdom Guards defended the kingdom openly, the Seekers operated from the shadows, eliminating threats before they could take root.

Forged in Purpose,

the Seekers were more than soldiers; they were an extension of Balthazar's vision for a kingdom that would endure. Selected from among the finest warriors, sorcerers, and tacticians, each candidate underwent a grueling process of training and initiation.

The final test was the Rite of Veiled Flame, an ancient ritual overseen by the kingdom's most powerful Weave sorcerers. The rite was said to strip the candidates of their earthly desires, binding their essence to the Weave itself. Those who succeeded emerged as something greater—individuals capable of sensing the threads of danger, of seeing the unseen. Those who failed were consumed, their essence absorbed into the Weave.

The Seekers' Oath, spoken by every initiate upon completion of the rite, remains unchanged across the centuries:

"For the kingdom, we walk unseen. For the kingdom, we strike unheard. For the kingdom, we forsake ourselves."

The Creed of the Seekers,

The Seekers' creed, etched into the Hall of Echoes, defines their unwavering duty

To sense what others cannot. The Seekers' attunement to the Weave allows them to detect disturbances, patterns of chaos, and whispers of treachery that others overlook.

To act without hesitation. Bound by loyalty, the Seekers are prepared to eliminate threats swiftly, whether they arise from outside invaders or from within the kingdom itself.

To forsake glory. their victories are uncelebrated, their deeds unspoken. The Seekers live and die in the shadows, unknown to all but a few.

To ensure survival at all costs. no sacrifice is too great. Should the kingdom's survival demand their lives, their honor, or even their very souls, the Seekers will give without question.

Bound by Solemnity.

Each Seeker carries a piece of the kingdom's past within them. Their armor, adorned with patterns reflecting the flows of the Weave, symbolizes their sacred duty. The weight of history lies heavy on their shoulders, for they are more than guardians—they are living embodiments of the kingdom's resolve to endure.

The Seekers answer only to the Commander of the Guards and the king himself. Even among the guards, their existence is whispered of with awe and unease. For many, the Seekers are both protectors and a reminder that loyalty to the kingdom must remain absolute.

Under Balthazar's Reign,

Balthazar's vision for the Seekers was clear. they were to be a failsafe, a safeguard against threats too insidious for armies or councils. Under his reign, the Seekers dismantled rebel cells, uncovered treacherous plots, and struck down enemies before they could amass their strength.

It was during these years that their creed took shape. They were often sent beyond the kingdom's borders, to the depths of enemy territory, where no reinforcements could follow. To ensure their success, the Seekers adopted a simple mantra: "Victory at all costs."

This ethos has persisted through generations. Seekers have been known to infiltrate enemy ranks, sacrificing their identities and even their lives to bring down threats. Others have taken oaths of silence, vanishing from public view to protect the kingdom from within.

Though eons have passed since their creation, the Seekers remain the kingdom's greatest safeguard against the unknown. Their slumber, as ordered by King Arman, was not an end but a pause—a precautionary measure taken during a time of relative peace.

But peace is an illusion, and the kingdom's enemies have never truly disappeared. As the Shadowborne rise and whispers of other dangers spread, the time has come to awaken the Seekers once more. They will emerge from their slumber as they always have—silent, resolute, and bound by their creed.

"For the kingdom, we walk unseen. For the kingdom, we strike unheard. For the kingdom, we forsake ourselves."
