Chapter 1 - The dusk before mourning

England 1912.

A mist of darkness started to creep over the horizon as a young boy ventured deeper into the forest, his hands clutching a brown basket as he sat down to observe his surroundings. It wouldn't be long till nightfall, and by then it would be fruitless to try find any food without a source of light. He would have to hurry. Scrambling he got up from his squat and continued to search through the bushes and shrubs for any signs of life or vegetation.

This winter had been an especially grueling one, with handfuls of villagers perishing monthly. And it didn't seem like it would end any time soon for there were no blooming seeds in sight.

"you know it's hopeless right ? " spoke a black haired girl sitting on a tree. Her face was pale like the snow and her lips stained red like blood. After no response from the boy she continued, " Come on Elias , no matter how hard we scavenge, there will never be enough food for all of us . Why try? , we're all going to die anyways"

silence.

Instead of answering, the boy continued digging through the ground, but now his hands moved more rapidly. The girl sighed as she gracefully leaped off the dirty trunk

with her black hair fluttering in the air. She landed in front of him , her brown eyes analysing him.

"Move Elaine" he commanded as he glared at her. Despite how threating his glare seemed , Elaine smiled in return after all how could she not find her younger brother so adorable.

" I'm joking , calm down. " she reassured him as her smile grew larger. " A few moments ago you were just tiny weeny baby but look at you now , glaring at your older sister " she said as she fell into a fit of laughter.

" Hey be quite " he whispered at her anxiously as if they were stuck in a dragon's den and that any sound above a whisper would awaken the beast. Although he had travelled here several times he still couldn't let down his guard. " what Elias don't tell me you are scared, wait do you still think werewolves are real? " she questioned.

" of course not" he replied his voice lacking any real conviction. Thankfully the girl hadn't noticed and stopped her interrogation .

Werewolves were monsters who supposedly took the form of wolves during the day and night, whilst on full moons they took the form of humans. But they were different from normal wolves and humans, containing inhuman strength and speed that surpassesed all, those revolting beasts were said to have tortured the lives of their prey, laughing will their trapped prey struggled to escape. Rumours even say that some werewolves could chose to turn into a human whenever they had desired. Using their facade to trick lone travellers and merchants into their lair. The elders would describe and explain the stories of the virtuous mages in the past who would defeat those beasts although now those stories became nothing more than tales spoken to scare little children into obeying their parents. But for some unknown reason Elias could never shake off the feeling that perhaps somewhere, somewhere deep in the mountains , Werewolves could be alive and that one day those beings could decide to come down and wreck chaos on the Earth once again. Like this oh so many years ago.

"Hey , hey wake up ! " yelled Elaine as she shook life back into the motionless boy . "You did it again , why are you always so stuck in your head , it's not like you think a lot ? " she questioned as held him up. "Let's go home, you are probably tired and it's already night, staying out here would be useless" she continued as she started dragging him along.

"I'm sorry " the boy apologized, ever since he was young he'd always have trouble focusing and during lessons he'd always end up day dreaming. But fortunately Elias didn't have to go to lessons anymore , after the winter had depleted all the resources most of the teachers had resigned since students couldn't afford to go school anymore.

As he was dragged along a rocky path he stared at the sky which had been fully covered by a blanket of darkness , every inch of the sky had been tainted black asides from a glowing ball of white. The moon. 'Huh its seem the full moons is out' thought Elias as he forced his attention back on going home.

He breathed out as a light breeze ruffled his hair, today was such a nice...

Wait a second. He thought as he breathed in again , a burning smell plagued his nose as he desperately looked around for the source. A faint light of orange smoke danced in the distance right next to the ... the village.

"Ahhhh RUN , RUN AWAY! "
