Katelyn's POV
We arrive home, well at Jason's house. It's only home to me because I'm a werewolf. Jason puts everything in the fridge. As I wander around, I notice some stairs. And as you may have guessed, I went to investigate.
I look around, there were four bedrooms, and blood splattered on the wall. What happened up here? I went up further, grabbing the door knobs to one of the rooms. But before I could open the door, I heard a loud growl. "What are you doing up here?"
I turn my head, and Jason is standing there. "I'm sorry... I-I-I-I was just curious." I whimpered. "Go back downstairs," Jason growled. I walked back down stairs. Jason soon came down after me.
Jason's POV
I watched Katelyn curl up in front of the couch with her ears drooped. I felt a pang of something uncomfortable—was it guilt? No. I was an evil mastermind. I did not apologize, nor did I feel remorse... right?
I glanced back up at the stairs. The blood-stained walls were a painful reminder of my past—of the day my family was brutally taken from me.
I remembered it vividly. I was once a young human boy, taken in by a werewolf pack that showed me kindness. They were the last of their kind, and they taught me their ways, making me one of them. They became my family.
Then came the night of the massacre. Humans, driven by cruelty, invaded our home and slaughtered everyone. Only Rena, the pack's alpha, managed to hide me. She told me I was special, but even now, I don't fully understand why. What could be so special about a werewolf like me?
I looked back at Katelyn, trying to push away the painful memories. I needed to focus on the present, on what was left of my life.
Katelyn's POV
"I'm sorry..." I murmured.
Jason looked at me for a moment before his expression softened slightly. "Well, I suppose it's not entirely your fault," he said, his tone more measured. "You didn't know anything about what happened."
Katelyn's POV
I glanced out the window as the sun began to rise. "So... am I supposed to be nocturnal now?" I asked curiously.
Jason shrugged nonchalantly. "You can be if you want. Personally, I don't get much sleep."
I raised an eyebrow. "Let me guess, you spend all your time working on those 'evil plans' of yours instead?"
Jason gave me a sideways glance and smirked. I'll take that as a "yes".
Jason's POV
Katelyn's ears twitched as she looked around the room. "You don't need me as a teddy bear if that's what you want," I said with a hint of irritation.
"Very funny. But actually, I just want a blanket," Katelyn replied.
I sighed and rolled my eyes. "Well, I'm not going to be your blanket either," I grumbled.
"Who said I wanted you to be my blanket?"
"You've used me as one every other time."
Katelyn tapped her fingers together sheepishly. "Well... I guess I did kind of... snuggle up to you...a lot."
I shook my head. "You're something else, you know that? Just find an actual blanket."
Katelyn wagged her tail, clearly amused. "Alright, alright. But if you get lonely, just know I'll be around."
I snorted. "I think I'll manage."
A few hours later...
I glanced back at Katelyn, who was sound asleep on the couch. She looked so peaceful, curled up with a soft blanket. But she was dangerously close to rolling off. I couldn't just let her fall. Evil masterminds do not help others.... Do they?
I sighed and walked over, gently pulling the blanket back over her and shifting her slightly so she wouldn't fall. She stirred slightly but didn't wake. I sat down on the other end of the couch, trying to focus on my scattered plans.
But every few minutes, my gaze drifted back to Katelyn. What was happening to me? I was supposed to be focused on my revenge, not on making sure someone didn't fall off the couch.
Unless... am I in a romance story?! I don't belong in a romance story! Do I? Wait, no! I don't! I can't!
I sighed and tried to refocus on my plans. But as I watched her sleep, I couldn't shake the feeling that maybe, just maybe, there was something more important than my quest for revenge.
I picked up a spare blanket from the closet and carefully draped it over myself. I sighed again. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to care about someone for once.
But only just this once.
I turned away, trying to get back to my plans, but the warmth of the blanket and the soft sound of Katelyn's breathing made it difficult to concentrate. Maybe, just maybe, being an evil mastermind and caring for someone weren't mutually exclusive.
But I still had to figure out how to get my revenge. That was non-negotiable.
