I can hear my heartbeat in my ears as I shoot from the elevator as soon as the doors drift open with Lexington hot on my heels. The light in the hospital hallways seems more vibrant and the scent of disinfectant more pungent as I quickly shift past nurses and doctors hovering over files, speaking in low whispers. When I finally walked through the door to Renee's hospital room it was as though the world had stopped spinning a moment when I saw her sitting up in her bed with her eyes open.
Her curly hair was still an unkempt mess, swept up in a messy ponytail, but when her brown eyes met mine it felt like a connection that had been severed had finally been restored. An audible sob escaped my lips as relief skated across my skin when I ran to her side, carefully taking her into my arms.
"I'm ok, Gen. I'm ok." Renee rasps in a sleep soft voice.
