"There was only one interested buyer, young miss. But I put it off as you requested."
I took a deep breath, giving my apartment a final glance.
I blew out a sigh. My heart was feeling heavy.
"Thank you, Bruce. I know this was sudden. Please forgive me for being a nuisance."
"You are never a nuisance, Miss Amiel."
"I'll never get tired of hearing that."
"Call me if you need anything, young miss. My line is always open."
"Now, now, all is well, Bruce. I promised that this would be the last request I made. You are no longer bound to work for me."
"You are like a daughter to me, Miss Amiel."
I needed to cut the call short. Tears were beginning to form in my eyes.
"And for that, I'm always grateful. I hope you're using my gift to you to your heart's content."
There was a chuckle from the other end of the line. I couldn't help but smile broadly.
