Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 - inscriptions and runes

After eating dinner, Clay followed his father to the workshop. Clay is really interested about inscriptions, because with inscriptions he can finally make guns.

In Clay's past life, he's not just a simple soldier. He is also a gun collector, He is really interested in gun back when he was a kid that's why he chose to be a soldier. He became a soldier not only to fire guns but also experience actual combat, so he can say that he is pretty proficient in handling guns.

After reaching the workshop, glade explained the basics of inscription. Inscription is the use of diagrams to program an item to do specific actions. Diagrams are made of magical lines connected to various parts of the item to perform specific task which makes the inscribed item work. On the center of the inscribed item is the core which provides energy to the diagram. Cores are usually just a soul stone.

High tier inscribed items usually have a magical beast core as a core because it holds more energy, but beast cores are pretty expensive so inscription master resort to using soul stones which is more common. To make the lines of the diagram, you need to use a wand.

'So diagrams are similar to circuit board on earth and the lines are just like wires and the cores are like batteries' Clay thought while comparing inscriptions and circuitry.

'then what's different about my father's inscription technique?'

"What's different about your technique, father?" Clay asked wearing a curious expression.

"My technique is called 'Rune Forging', as the name suggests, I make runes and use them to make inscribed items. I make and fuse runes with meaning, and then forge it on a specific parts for it to perform a specific action. When I assembled the parts together, the inscribed item will be finished." Glade explained.

"I use runes instead of diagrams and fuse them in various parts of the item, that's like having multiple diagrams but simple inscriptions." Glade said with a proud smile.

'oh...so it's like having multiple circuit boards, that's why my father's inscribed items can perform multiple task at once.'

"Does that mean you use multiple cores as well?" Clay asked.

"No and yes, no because I can just link all of the runes on one powerful core, if there is. Yes because beast cores are pretty expensive so I resort on multiple soul stones and linked them together to get the same effect, I call it 'chained cores'." Glade answered while still smiling.

"I connected multiple cores like a chain to get the similar effect of beast cores, having a good amount of energy while still being cheap." Glade added, he looks more prouder than before.

"Father, did you invent that method? Then why does no one copying it?" Clay asked while eyeing his father.

His father's smile broaden when he heard Clay's question. "That's because I fused the chained cores together, making the core look like a simple rune. I call it 'Core Rune'. They couldn't find any core on my inscriptions, that's why they can't copy it." After Glade said that, his pride skyrocketed.

'So that's it, he hides it so well and is also the only one who can do it.'

"Amazing" Clay said while looking at his father, he had to admit that his father is really amazing.

"Enough with the flattery, let me teach you how to use meanings to make runes. And after that, I'll teach how to make Core Runes". Glade concluded.

Runes are made using magical lines just like diagrams, but different. Diagrams' lines are loose, they meant to link on various parts of an inscribed item. While Runes' lines are compact, the lines are almost fused together into one symbol to perform one task.

Runes are meant to be used for formations, because formations are more complex than inscriptions, and it can also perform multiple tasks. Rune forging are like forging a formation on an item, that's why it can perform multiple tasks.

"In rune forging, you don't use magical lines to make runes. Instead, you use meanings to make the rune itself!" Glade explained.

Meanings are a type of will. Wills are the manifestation of memories and emotions, it can interact with people and can also be absorbed. Meanings are wills that can't be interacted with, it is meant to be absorbed. You can make meanings by combining a small amount of soul essence and memories, meanings are ethereal so it can't be seen by the naked eyes.

"In rune forging, after you make a meaning, you need to imbue it with spiritual essence, causing it to manifest. After the 'meaning' manifested, you need a vessel for it to became a rune; You can use a wand as a vessel. Imbue the meaning into the wand and let the will guide your hands to draw the rune, draw it into a grimoire or any type of book to contain it." Glade continued.

'i see, meaning is still a type of will, so it naturally have the ability to think and guide the wand to draw runes.'

"Does it matter how complex the meaning is to make runes?" Clay asked

"Complex meaning doesn't matter, it even makes the rune perform better." Glade replied, clearing Clay's doubts.

'So, if complex meanings doesn't matter, then it makes this technique have limitless potential.' Clay concluded.

After glade finished explaining how to make runes with meaning, he then explained how to fuse runes and cores to make a core rune.

"Fusing runes are easy, you just need to stack runes on top of each other, and use a wand imbued with soul essence to trace its overall shape. The soul essence made the runes and it's meanings to turn ethereal for a split second, causing them to naturally fuse with each other." Glade explained his unique way of fusing runes.

"But fusing the chained cores together is kind of hard. You first need to connect the cores using a rune called 'connect', it is a rune made out of the 'meaning of connection'. After connecting the cores, you have to store them inside a rune called 'storage', a rune made out of the 'meaning of store'. After storing the chained cores you need to inject soul essence to it, making the rune and the meanings inside it turn ethereal; Then trace it using a wand and the process is done. The result is a spherical rune with dots inside it, indicating how many cores are chained inside it." Glade concluded.

"Now, I will demonstrate to you how to inscribe using rune forging." Glade said while gathering material to work with.

"I will forge and inscribed dagger, so watch carefully" glade said while preparing his tools

Glade will make an inscribed dagger. He took out an iron ingot and a piece of brown wood. Glade starts by forging the metal, hammering it into his desired shape and grinding it in his grindstone. He then carved the piece of wood into a handle.

He then took out his runes which is inside a grimoire. He imbued spiritual essence on a 'sharpness' and 'hardness' rune and fuse it into the blade to make it sharp and durable. After inscribing the blade, glade proceeded to forge the handle, he added 'durability' rune and 'comfort' rune to make it more durable and comfortable to hold. After finishing the parts, glade proceeded to assemble it. He then took out a core rune with 4 dots on it and fuse it on the base of the hilt, finishing the product.

Clay watched carefully, he didn't want to miss every single step. This inscription method made his plan to make guns possible.

"See, just like that and I already made a high quality dagger with added sharpness and durability" Glade said while giving the dagger to clay.

Clay immediately slammed the dagger on an iron ingot. He was amazed by it's sharpness because the dagger manage to make a 2 inches deep cut. He then tried to break it by clamping it and forcing the blade to bend, but it didn't.

'amazing, he made a high quality dagger just with that simple inscriptions. I wonder how amazing high tier inscribed items are.'

"You're amazing father, learning this inscription technique is definitely worth it." Clay said while giving the dagger back.

"Can I use your workshop after the awakening?" Clay asked his father.

"Of course! You can use my workshop anytime you want." Glade said while wearing a proud smile.

"Thanks father, it's already late, I should take my leave now. I need to wake up early for Tomorrow." Clay replied while heading to his room.

"Okay, take care!" his father said while cleaning the workshop.

'I should try experimenting on inscriptions after the awakening. I can't wait to try and make a prototype.' Clay thought before sleeping.
