Chapter 3 - 3. come back home

She sat behind a young, impeccably dressed gentleman who greeted her with a warm smile, to which she responded in kind. Despite the elegant setting, she felt a sense of unease in the presence of the other attendees. With her legs crossed gracefully, she maintained a pleasant smile as he poured a glass of wine and offered it to her. Their hands briefly touched as she accepted the wine, causing a delightful shiver to run down her spine. She delicately brought the glass to her lips and took a sip and smiled at him, he smiled back.

"Are you enjoying your evening?"he inquired, his deep voice jolting her back."Yes, thank you,"she replied, forcing a smile. The conversation stagnated, with only polite exchanges filling the silence. The two were engrossed in conversation before the old man interrupted them.

"I apologize for taking your time, but before you leave, I would like you to meet Mr. Coles. He is a great admirer of yours,"the old man introduced the man beside her.

"He is one of my business partners and he..."The old man was about to continue speaking before he was cut off by the man.

"I truly admired your singing, and I would be honored to have your autograph before you depart,"he produced a stylish pen from his pocket and offered a notebook for her signature. She signed it and returned it to him, giving him a firm handshake. However, his grip lingered for a moment longer. The atmosphere of the room was filled with soft jazz floating through the luxurious lounge, mingling with laughter and the clinking of glasses. After a few minutes, she eventually made her way around the room exchanging pleasantries with the faces around her. The cool breeze outside beckoned, prompting her to take the opportunity to step out."

I'll just step outside for some fresh air,"she mentioned to the hotel owner, smiling

."Of course, enjoy your evening,"he replied. As she stepped outside, the sounds of laughter and music faded away, replaced by the soothing hum of the city.Upon arriving back home, she settled onto her couch, unwinding from the evening's events, when her phone rang

."Hello?"she answered.

" Lylah , dear, it's Grandma,"a warm voice said. "We need you to come home."lylah's heart skipped a beat.

"What's the matter?""It's your father,"Grandma replied, her voice trembling. "He's unwell. The doctor says it's serious."

"Father, what could have happened to him?"she inquired."Your father has not been feeling well recently, we just took him to the hospital and he needs to undergo an operation

."Regardless, I am not concerned about him. If he needs something, he should have turned to his wife and daughter, not me."

"No matter what, your father regrets sending you away, and since you left home, everything has been in disarray. Your mother was unhappy when you left and went to come back,"Grandma narrated

."Mother...anyway, I do not need anyone to miss me. If I do return home, it will not be to that house. I want to live independently without my father or Mrs. Benton. Good news, I will be returning soon. I will see you and Grandpa shortly. Take care,"she said before ending the call. Since she was young, her only fond memories were of her grandparents. Childhood laughter, warm embraces, and Saturday dinners flooded her thoughts. Her grandparents always shielded her from her sister and mother's malevolent schemes, even though they were aware that she was an illegitimate child.

She reminisced about the past, the echoes of her childhood ringing in her ears. The warmth of her grandparents' love enveloped her as she sat on the couch, contemplating the sudden turn of events. Despite the estrangement from her immediate family, she found solace in the memories of her grandparents' unwavering support and care. The news of her father's illness stirred conflicting emotions within her, bringing to the surface unresolved family dynamics and buried sentiments.

As she pondered the implications of her impending return, a sense of determination welled up inside her. The desire for independence and self-reliance echoed loudly in her mind, contrasting sharply with the familial expectations that had long weighed on her shoulders. The prospect of reuniting with her grandparents brought a mix of excitement and trepidation, knowing that their unconditional love would provide a safe harbor amidst the storm of familial discord.

With a renewed sense of purpose, she made a silent vow to confront the ghosts of her past and forge a path of her own choosing. The echoes of her grandmother's voice lingered in her mind, urging her to embrace her roots while staying true to herself. As she prepared for the journey back home, a sense of resolve settled within her, propelling her towards a future where her voice would no longer be silenced by the shadows of the pastWith a renewed sense of purpose, she silently vowed to confront the specters of her past and carve out a path of her own choosing. The echoes of her grandmother's wisdom resonated in her mind, encouraging her to embrace her heritage while remaining authentic to herself. As she readied herself for the journey back home, a steely determination settled within her, propelling her towards a future where her voice would no longer be overshadowed by the ghosts of yesteryears. Seated on a sofa, engrossed in a movie on the television and nibbling on snacks, exhaustion weighed heavily upon her, urging her to seek respite in slumber before she could find true rest. Suddenly, a text message from her closest companion, Sarah, interrupted her tranquility. Sarah, her steadfast companion from their shared school days, reached out to her.

As Lylah typed out her response, memories of their adventures together flooded her mind. From late-night study sessions to spontaneous road trips, Sarah had been by her side through it all. The bond they shared transcended mere friendship, evolving into a deep connection built on trust and mutual respect.
