Chapter 17 - Extra: Crimson Mist

Krisven

^^^^^^^^^

On a wonderfully peaceful Spring morning, my sister Leora and I were roaming the forest, looking for wild plants and berries to live off of. It's been a few months since we were kicked out of our clan. We had to learn how to live off the land. And that we did.

"Leo! Is this edible?" I asked, pointing to a different looking grass.

"No, those are weeds…"

"How about this?"

"No, those are cattail stalks. Well, technically they are, but-"

I took a bite out of one of them and an explosion of fuzz filled my mouth.

"-need to be cooked…"

"Mmph mmmmphm mmph."

Leora just put her hand to her face in a disapproving manner. Well, I guess I can see why. As we traveled on down the unmarked path, the forest got thicker and thicker. There were some signs of hunters in the area, but they were doing their own thing. And they seemed to only kill what they needed.

As the day went on by, we were accompanied by a few butterflies and birds singing in the trees. There were still various amounts of edible plants and mushrooms Leo and I gathered to eat for dinner. My only worry was that Leo kinda sucks at cooking, so we normally end up with raw things like that. Not very tasty.

Treats consisted of the rare berries that can be found on some bushes within this forest, but those were highly competitive. Between us, animals, and other people, they were almost always gone.

Though life was hard, me and Leora made the most out of it. Though sometimes it would be nice to actually have a roof over our heads, y'know. As we were walking down the path, Leora sensed something malicious attempting to surround us.

Drawing her knife, Leora said "Stay behind me. And when I tell you to run for it, run for it, okay?"

"But what about you?"

"I'll be fine."

A few moments later, a twig snapped behind us and we both turned around. A gaggle of goblins were in a crescent formation. And they had clubs out ready to attack. Sizing us up, a couple of the goblins tried to attack, but Leora slashed through them. But there were too many, and she couldn't hold them off for that long.

"Kris," Leora said, between breaths.

"Yes?"

"I am going to distract them. Run and try to get help."

"But, what about you?"

She smiled at me and said "I'll be fine."

And she pushed me towards the forest, and yelled at the goblins trying to get their attention.

And I ran.

I ran so far.

I don't know how far I ended up running, but it was the only thing I could do. The mist of the forest had messed with my sense of direction. I had no idea where I was going. Or what I should be doing. I was completely alone out here. Alone and isolated.

I must have been running for a while, because I couldn't hear Leora fighting anymore. All I heard was a jingle of a small bell. Every couple of minutes, I'd just hear that tiny bell. But I had no idea where it was coming from. And then I tripped and fell over a root.

Apparently, some of the goblins had ended up following me, even though Leora did her best to distract them. Turning around, I saw one of them raise its rusty sword and try to attack me. Trying to move back, I was too slow and it slashed my leg and I screamed in pain.

The scream reverberated throughout the forest, and I knew this was it for me.

Please. Someone. Save me…

And as I uttered those words, that same bell chimed once more.

Maybe it was because of the pain, or maybe it was because I was scared, tears just ran down my cheek.

Resigning myself to my fate, another goblin stabbed me in the same wound, making it much deeper than before. Once again, as the blood spurted from my leg, I howled in pain, tears in my eyes. There was no way I could run anymore. This was it for me.

And then I felt the wind pressure rising.

And I heard a boom.

I opened my eyes and saw a boy with frost white hair and ruby eyes standing in front of me, wearing the crimson mist like a coat.
