His head was in the cloud, completely lost in thought. As he stood under the bright sun, the heat touching his skin, he started to question things such as 'What is my purpose?' 'Am I ever going to amount to anything?' 'What will happen when I die? And where will I go?' None of them had any answers yet he pondered them anyway. Time seemed to move slowly as he watched the people around him walk home.
"Hey there!"
A sudden loud voice brought him back to reality. It was of a voice he heard often. The voice belonged to a person named Sam.
"Ah. You took so long I was thinking about just ditching you." David said sarcastically
"Come on, I was only late by like five minutes! You're so cold!"
"Then are you ready to go home now?"
"Yup!"
The two walked home together every day. They believed that this is what couples do so they did it too. Though it probably doesn't matter if this wasn't a 'couple thing' as they enjoy each other's company more than anything.
"Mrs. River's Math test is tomorrow. Did you study?" David asked
"Ahhh ...if I say no, would you be upset?"
"Well, you failing wouldn't affect me, so I won't be upset. But maybe... disappointed."
"Gak! That's so cliche, yet so effective!!"
"If you want, we can study together at my house."
"Like a date? Usually, I'm the one to ask you." Sam said teasingly
"We're just studying! It's not that special…" David quickly rebutted
Sam smiled "I was joking you don't need to get all flustered"
"...So are you coming or not because here is where we usually split up."
"Alright! Alright! Let's go study then!"
The two walked together in silence, the kind that feels comforting rather than awkward. While the distance between their houses was far, the distance between David's house and the school wasn't much, so it didn't take long for them to get to the house.
They took off their shoes and went upstairs. Sam immediately went to look at the games David had, but he pulled them away so they could start studying.
"Huh, it's getting kinda dark outside. Do you want me to walk you home tonight?" David asked
"Are you sure? You don't have to, I mean wouldn't it be a lot of work to walk me home and then come back to your house."
"Well...it's just that...I don't want you going home alone when it's this dark."
"Awww you're concerned for me! But you don't have to, I know how to kick ass, so I'll be fine on my own!"
"Then, how about I go because I want to talk with you a little longer?"
"You really are cute, you know that? Well then, let's get going now."
They both live near the school but their houses are about an hour away from each other.
"Are you sure you want to walk me all the way home? I don't want to bother you. You honestly worry too much anyway..." Sam said.
They walked to Sam's house together
…
As David was walking, he trailed his hand on the nearby fence. He wasn't paying attention to anything other than his hand. When the fence ended he looked up to see a girl standing there, staring right at him.
As Sam was pulling the trash bin to the front of the house, they went to check the mail as well. Since there was nothing new, they got ready to go back inside when they noticed someone standing nearby between them and their house.
