Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 - waiting

Even if the chief had tried to calm down the villagers before his departure, of course, it didn't make the situation any better for them. When village head Olaf had left and Dorgon, the second vice-chief, take the stage:

"I advise everyone to calm down. I understand that you are curious and a bit worried. Fortunately, the chief had gone out to solve that specific problem, so there isn't much to be anxious about."

After his words, everyone started to disperse, because most likely they would not get any news for some time.

Inga was lost in her thoughts, it was clear that she was very nervous about Bjorn's lateness and the chief's sudden trip out of the village. She tried so hard to hold her emotions, but she was still a human.

Even though many things have already happened, it was still only morning. The tribe somehow has to continue to do its life. Ulf was walking around the village. He was surveying others, as he didn't have anything to do and being in the house was quite depressing when Ulf couldn't change anything.

Ulf was watching the dogs. Yes, the dogs, they were pets. They were similar to the wolves, almost all of them. That's why Ulf thought that in this world the dogs were tamed not long ago. Their characters were softer and friendlier than wild creatures, but their body features were still the same as the wolf on the earth. As for the wolf here, he saw it one time, when hunters brought one back. Not just a normal one, but a dire wolf and was much bigger compared to the same kind back on the earth. Ulf also has seen some other animals and gained important information.

As he got an idea, the levels of the creatures are also different depending on their power. The weakest of them were the animals, but it didn't mean that they were harmless. At least their colossal bodies were proof that it wouldn't be only decoration. Next were the beasts and the wolves were in this type. Ulf hasn't seen them in the process of the fight but heard that for really strong ones to be dealt with, may at least two leader rank hunters or a team of warriors would be needed.

These guys resided in most of the forests. After watching them, it wasn't hard to understand why the wood was scarce here. The tribesmen and women had to go out in the group with weapons for hunting, fishing or even gather some fruits, seeds and wild cereal grains outside, to make sure that if Some creatures attacked them, they could defend themself. The village has had several accidents because of that and some of them were fatal.

Ulf heard two years ago that two ferocious beasts had appeared out of nowhere near the village. Normally it was the gatekeeper's duty to drive them away. However, the common village gatekeeper would only be a snack to them. The vice-chief Dorgon went out together with 3 leader rank hunters. One beast was killed and another was able to escape. So, four powerhouses, even when one of them had captain rank, couldn't kill two strong beasts. Ulf was only three years old and wasn't allowed to go up on the wall, especially at times like that to watch the fight.

That's why even the wood for winter to warm the houses was a bit of luxury here.

The last was the monster type. These fellas were in a different league, compared to others. Between them, there were also comparable weaker and stronger monsters. However, even for the weakest one whole hunting group would be needed, with the risk that maybe half of the team would be killed, so it wasn't worth gaining. Only the vice-chief's group was strong enough to kill some of them. Ulf even had eaten body parts of these animals and knew their miraculous effect, but this subject is for the future.

As for specific features of these creatures, Ulf had very vague knowledge and was not reliable for him. It was because what this tribe had leaked for him is talkativity. The Villagers were often very stingy to give important information.

Ulf even heard that sometimes there is a so-called "monster tide" outside of the village. It's mostly around the beginning of the spring and winter, two times in the year. A huge number of the creatures were moving together. At the start of winter, A large part of the creatures move in the tide toward the south and when the spring starts they come back again.

At that time even if these creatures usually avoided any stronghold, the village was still careful, the reason was that attack of these kinds of groups could bring the whole tribe's existence at risk and carelessness wasn't the solution. In front of it, even captain rank hunters would have a slim chance to survive, and if the tide contained the monsters, then resistance would be pointless.

As for stronger creatures, very little of them was known. However, they existed mostly far away from here in the north. They were mythical beings, but one fact was that they usually lived deep inside the forest and mountains and also almost all intersections with them resulted in death. Nevertheless, there was some gossip, that if they wished, those terrible creatures could destroy everything and everyone on their way, even mountains. It was hard to imagine that a living being could do anything like that.

Ulf was thinking about those things and wandering around the village aimlessly. Slowly the sun was already setting and the villagers, who were out of the village together, were coming back.

At night, part of the population stays in the house and others are going to the centre of the village - a training ground to speak with each other. The latter activity is more popular today, due to the latest development in the village.

Even so, this time of the day had a different meaning for Ulf. Every night he was running at the fastest speed between the houses of the outer part of the village using the qi in his legs. It was helping Ulf to master control of qi and use it more effectively. Using qi only in one part of the body was demanding having enough spiritual energy, knowledge and experience to control the process. And using qi in both legs needed more of everything mentioned.

More often Ulf was running at night, every time he was getting quicker. In the past, he needed to meditate every time to use spiritual energy as a medium to have commandment over the qi in his body. As his mastery over the qi and spiritual energy had been improving step by step, after a few years the meditation is no longer needed. Now, he can directly use both of those powers.

Running around with this speed was kind of challenging, not to be caught by others. Ulf was trying to be as quiet and fast as possible. Those skills would be more needed in the forest in the future to catch prey or escape from the dangers.

The sun had already set, there were some noises only in the training ground and the rest of the tribe was calm. However, suddenly the loud voice of the horn spread across the entire village. Ulf stopped running right away.

'The sound of the horn? Why? Is our village fucked up or what?' thought Ulf and started running toward the main gate.

The Horn at the entrance of the village was the last and fastest means to gather everyone from the tribe who can fight. However, it was rarely used, because it was only allowed to be used if the tribe was under attack.

Ulf clearly wouldn't be allowed to take a part in any kind of conflict. However, he has been wondering what has caused the gatekeepers to use horns and how severe the situation was. He was trying to be hidden from others, not to be seen by them and ordered to go back.

Along the way, he also saw tribesmen and women running with their weapons toward the entrance. From their facial expression, they seemed to be anxious, but not afraid, rather most of them had a fire in their eyes.

P.S. Sorry guys for so much information. May you be a bit annoyed, because of that. However it's important for the future development of the novel, so please tolerate it.
