Chapter 4 - White Cliffs

"AGHH!" Vier is internally screaming, all his veins popping and his blood coursing through his veins at light speed.

"You know you're meant to lift it up, right?" Ms Yoon was writing something on her clipboard.

"I give up!" Vier laid on the ground, covered in sweat and tears.

"Uh huh," Ms Yoon had a disappointed look on her face.

Ms Yoon blew her whistle and Vier started to run on the sand.

"I'm going to do it! I'm going to get above average!" Vier had a victorious look on his face.

"6.5 seconds!" She blew her whistle.

"Was that good?" Vier was panting.

"It was a 20-meter sprint, a child could run faster than you." Ms Yoon had an even more disappointed look on her face.

-----Scene 2-----

"I wonder what I got." Vier had a melancholic look on his face. He held an envelope in his hands.

"What do you think you'll get?" Kreel also had an envelope in his hand. They sat next to the road, their back's laying on a farm fence, with a cafe next to them.

"I don't know." The sun was setting behind them.

"Well, look for me!" Kreel opened up the envelope and it showed a large card that displayed 'Tier 1 Venator.' "Woo! I'm a tier one! Isn't that great?!"

"A tier 1 is literally the bottom line." Vier tried to hold back his laughter, "Well, look for me." Vier opened up his envelope.

'Tier 2 Venator.' The card was blue, unlike Kreel's grey card.

"Well, I was expecting a tier 1, that's not bad." Vier placed the card into his pocket, "Wanna start kicking some ass and start clearing dungeons?" Vier looked over at Kreel.

Kreel had a sad look on his face, he had expected something better than the lowest tier.

-----Scene 3-----

"Mom?" Vier knocked at his door. He lived in a village and away from modern-day conveniences. There was no reply, "Anyone home?" Vier knocked more aggressively at the door.

There was no reply. It was 7:36 PM, and the sun had almost set fully. Vier was sure his mom wouldn't sleep at this time, he knew his schedule like the back of his hand, she'd only go to sleep at 9 PM.

"Hello?" Vier knocked harder, "God damn it!" Vier kicked down the door, filling the dark cold room in a bright shower of light, "Mom!"

Vier's mom was lying down on the floor, a pool of blood surrounding her and soaked in the white carpet.

"MOM!" Vier slid down and fell down to her, checking her heartbeat on her neck. There was a weak pulse, she was barely breathing but she was still alive. He lifted her shirt and revealed a large gaping wound on her waist. There was a large cut on it and the wound was surrounded by a dark, black substance.

"Mom! Are you awake?" Vier started to shake her. There was no response. Vier felt that she was still warm, she wasn't too far gone. He picked up her, running through the door and towards the closest hospital. His mom never believed in modern-day conveniences, she was raised as a farm girl, helping out with livestock and crops, thus she wasn't that adept with technology and therefore lived far away from modern-day civilisation.

He held her in his arms, trudging through the mud and dirt. They lived 4 miles away from the nearest hospital, he had to trudge through 4 miles of the treacherous environment in the dark.

Vier was breathing heavily, he had invested all of his points into his speed and strength. Still, trying to run through 4 miles of unfavourable terrain was no easy feat.

"There'll be bluebirds over." His mom whispered under her breath as they trudged through the mud. The mud was up to Vier's knees, making it very hard to move.

"Mom!" Vier put his ear next to her mouth, "Are you okay?" She tried to respond but couldn't muster enough strength to reply. Suddenly, a large wave of nostalgia hit him in the face.

-----Scene 4-----

"There'll be bluebirds over." an elderly man sat on his bench, his shadow cast by the morning sun, "The white cliffs of Dover~" He sang, he had a calming voice, a voice that had been through hell, just to reach heaven. Cursed with pain, he tried to spread joy through his voice, "Your old man's really old now, he'll kick the bucket soon."

"Don't say that, that's bad luck." Vier's mom said to him, a young baby Vier sat on his mom's lap.

"Tomorrow, just you wait and see~" His voice was trembling, "There'll be love and la-" He coughed violently, coughing into his lap.

"Dad! Are you okay? You shouldn't push your voice, you're old now." Vier's mom reached over to comfort him.

"HAHAHA! Your old man is as good as new!" He slapped his own lap, "Remember Vier, when I do die, you'll grow up to be an awesome venator! Don't go follow in your dad's footsteps, that bastard got what he deserved! HAHAHA!" He slapped his lap again.

Vier didn't understand what he was saying, he just knew the tune to the song his grandpa would sing to him as he dozed off.

-----Scene 5-----

"The white cliffs of Dover." He trudged on through the mud, "Tomorrow, just you wait and see." He sang a singular drop fell on his shoulder, followed by many more. It was a storm.

"Dad?" His mom whispered under her breath, "Dad?" Her eyes had been closed shut by the same dark substance that had accumulated at her wound.

"No, silly, it's your son." Vier let a singular tear drop down from his cheek, falling down to the mud and falling into this rain drops.

"There'll be love and laughter." She sang under her breath.

"And peace ever after." Vier left the mud and started climbing upwards. Reaching the peak, a large cliff oversaw a dark bleak town underneath, built like slums and lit up with fire and candles. In front of him was a large city, large skyscrapers and buildings polluted the sky with light, blocking out the stars. The only problem was, that there was a large 300-metre gap between him and the city, with a large gaping ravine, riddled with informal houses and slums living inside the ravine. There was only a single bridge with a shaky platform.
